Hold off on those "Fear The Pirate Turtle" t-shirts for the moment.
It appears that Ralph Friedgen will not Go Gentle Into That Good Night.
Friedgen and his staff are hosting recruits this weekend with reports swirling around that he is about to be kicked out for former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach -- this after going 8-4 and being named ACC Coach of the Year. It was assumed that Maryland had convinced Friedgen to give up the final year on his contract and retire.
But Leach's agent - who also represents the Maryland Defensive Coordinator says Leach hasn't been contacted by anyone from Maryland.
Sports agent Gary O'Hagan also said that Kevin Plank, the former Maryland football player and Under Armour founder hasn't contacted either him or Leach. When Leach was at Texas Tech they became one of the first schools to sign an apparel contract with Under Armour.
Various media outlets have been reporting that Maryland AD Kevin Anderson decided to ease Friedgen out of the last year of his contract. Depite the Terrapins dramatic improvement from a 2-10 record in 2009 to this year's 8-4 mark, attendance was down and luxury boxes went unsold.
Maryland is in the Military Bowl where they will play East Carolina. The Pirates are coached by Ruffin McNeill, who was named interim coach at Texas Tech last season for the Alamo Bowl after Leach was fired for threatening to sue the university when it suspended him for his treatment of wide receiver Adam James, the son of ESPN analyst Craig James.
