Texas grabbed Longhorn legacy Breckyn Hager away from his Baylor commitment. Older brother Bryce is currently a starting LB for the Bears. Father Britt was an excellent MLB (he wore #60) who had a nice NFL career. Hager was lightly recruited by major programs until the summer when he reeled in offers from Baylor, Oklahoma and Texas.
Hager projects as a college LB, but he played DE and ILB in high school. He's listed perhaps optimistically at 6-3, 210, but he has a lean frame that's not going to have any problems filling out. The genetics certainly check out.
HUDL Film (note this includes sophomore and junior highlights)
- He's #40 as a sophomore, #5 junior. You can see the development difference which bodes well
- He's a natural pass rusher who runs through initial contact and exhibits good closing speed to the ball
- Nice swim move
- Physical and aggressive - takes on blockers and punishes other players (his option responsibility, pulling linemen) when the ballcarrier isn't available to hit
- Solid frame
- He's not a great lateral athlete - alligator speed. He shows better athleticism from the outside where a good first step and his closing speed serve him well
Hager already has 2 sacks, 16 tackles and 8 tackles for loss through 4 games as a senior.
The Longhorns are now up to 17 commits. Don't worry about space - plenty of room.
