Herman: Buechele Still Out, But Improving; Starter Undetermined for USC

Herman hopeful that Buechele can practice on Tuesday and Wednesday

NCAA Football: San Jose State at Texas Erich Schlegel-USA TODAY Sports

Texas coach Tom Herman said this afternoon at his weekly press conference that starting quarterback Shane Buechele’s status remained uncertain, but that he was showing signs of improvement. Herman indicated that whether Buechele can participate in practice on Tuesday would be “a big test.”

Herman added that if Buechele can practice Tuesday with the ones, and stay with the ones on Wednesday, that would go a long way towards determining the starter against the Trojans.

True freshman Sam Ehlinger was 15-27 for 222 yards and a touchdown in his first career start against San Jose State in in a 56-0 Texas victory last Saturday, paired with 48 yards rushing largely on scramble plays.

Herman seemed to suggest that if Buechele could play, that he would be the starter since he knows more of the offense.

Herman also said that backup quarterback Jerrod Heard, who rushed for 39 yards on eight carries scoring two touchdowns in a package that has only very shitty nicknames so far, will likely have a bigger role against Southern Cal. (We’re taking nominations.)

Also according to Herman, junior tight end Garrett Gray will not play against USC after injuring a knee against SJSU. Freshman guard Patrick Hudson shares the same fate. The Texas medical staff is awaiting the results of MRIs for both players.

More as events warrant.
