Texas Longhorns Basketball Releases 2013-14 Schedule

Texas books a manageable non-con schedule alongside a down year in the Big 12.

USA TODAY Sports

The Texas Longhorns men's basketball team released its 2013-14 schedule today. The non-conference schedule had previously been released, with the official announcement adding the conference portion.

Texas will participate in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic, held in Kansas City. The opening round opponent will be BYU, followed by either the championship or consolation game against Wichita St or DePaul. Prior to that tournament, Texas plays four cupcakes at home, presumably all broadcast on Longhorn Network.

The meaty part of Texas' non-conference schedule is littered with local home games against Texas-Arlington, Texas State and Rice. Texas hosts Vanderbilt in the Big 12-SEC Challenge, a team that went 16-16 last year and was recently decimated by offseason attrition. The Longhorns will travel to Philadelphia to take on Temple and Chapel Hill to face North Carolina, while hosting Michigan St at home. Temple loses A-10 POY Khalif Wyatt to graduation but should be competitive, while the Tar Heels and Spartans both have conference title aspirations.

The Longhorns' conference schedule is shamefully notable in that Texas doesn't play in a single Big Monday game. Just three of Texas' games are scheduled for national broadcast on ESPN2, while a few others are ESPNU-bound. The away game at Kansas is already relegated to ESPNU, while the home matchup could possibly find its way to its traditional CBS home if Texas starts conference play with a good record (so no, don't count on it).

For a team with no seniors, Texas will host its last game of the year against TCU. Surely the crowd will be rocking for that one. The Longhorns end the regular season at Texas Tech on ESPN News, which I was unaware even broadcast live college basketball events.

The non-conference schedule is manageable, similar to last year's in terms of competitiveness and winnability. A more experienced, more talented team should have an easy go, but this version of the Longhorns will have tough battles against all but the most mediocre of teams. Likewise, the Big 12 powers all lost significant players to graduation or early entry. In a Big 12 down year, the hope is Texas can stay close in most games while developing its roster to reap future benefits.
