Colt McCoy Beginning to Attract Attention

Posted by EyesOfTX on September 30th, 2008 under Football

Don’t look now, but the sports media are beginning to catch on to just how well Colt McCoy is playing his position this season. I was kind of hoping the folks at ESPN, Fox Sports and elsewhere would continue their mindless slobbering over guys like Tebow, Sanchez and what’s-his-name at Georgia until Colt had snuck up and put a huge bitch-slapping on an unsuspecting Bobby Stooooooooops in Dallas, but no such luck.

Colt is now the #1 Heisman contender as ranked by Fox Sports.

To make matters worse, he’s now number 5 with a bullet among the ”brain trust” at ESPN (Pay no attention to Ted Miller’s take - page down to the so-called “experts” poll).

Truly, Colt’s weeks of flying under the radar are behind him. Oh, well, it was fun while it lasted - now that the “experts” in the sports media have discovered him, the element of surprise is a thing of the past.

(This is me, posting with my tongue in my cheek.)

Colt is just a different QB this year. If I were to re-do my QB rankings now, I’d probably have Colt at third best in the conference instead of fourth behind Reesing.

I’m actually glad to see Colt take some of the Heisman talk away from Chase. This early talk before the grind of conference play is asinine.

  2. Imagine what Colt could do with a receiver like Jeremy Maclin. That’s what makes his numbers more impressive for me than Daniel or Bradford.

  3. mccoy moving up to #4 over at cnnsi.com

  4. And in other news, Cedric Benson just signed on with the Bengals. ugh.

  5. Upon arrival, Benson was immediately nicknamed “Mister Goody Two-shoes” by his new teammates.

  6. The off-season assumption by many pundits that Colt’s sophomore slump indicated a trend towards just getting worse over time was absurd on its face. I’d felt that Colt was being underappreciated.

It turns out that even I underappreciated the kind of year he might have. I expected the Colt of two years ago not some mega-Colt like we have.

He played well enough to win against OU last year. Ought to be a hell of a battle this year, too.

  7. Colt is playing well indeed. The competition gets tougher and we’ll see how good he really is. Beat OU and Missou, no doubt he’ll be top in the Heisman talk. Til then, we stay focus.

    Hook’Em

  8. If he wins the Heisman, will they retire his jersey before his senior year?

  9. “Colt is now the #1 Heisman contender as ranked by Fox Sports.”

Is “JG” of the InsideTexas board aware of this?

  10. At once I feel both “about damn time” and “goddammit ssshhhh!!”.

  11. “Is “JG” of the InsideTexas board aware of this?”

    If he is, he’s pissed.

I wonder if he will even be here for his Senior year.

  13. A lot of the underestimation is personality driven. Amish dudes generally make shitty football players, and the media is as capable of generalization as anyone. Drinking milk and quoting Ephesians doesn’t generally presage laying safeties the fuck out on the goal line. It takes near constant remonstration to remember that Colt is one part Mennonite, two parts Lucas McCain. Interesting paradox if you think abou it. Baby-faced AnaBaptist gunslingers of doom don’t come around everyday.

    Fuckin-A!

He’s playing his ass off. I say let Chiles transfer, who gives a shit? He can’t throw or run as good as Colt and next year Mr.Gilbert will be here. Why should we keep humoring Chiles and his family?

Having Colt win the Heisman at Texas would be just tits.

  15. Not only has Colt been great, but Chiles has been worse than anyone could’ve expected.

    Didn’t really see that coming.

  16. “If he is, he’s pissed.”

I really need to drop Clendon a note and thank him for banning me. Not having to read JG’s nonsense is like a little slice of heaven.

  17. We would have had an almost perfect frankenQB, if we could have combined Simm’s arm with McCoy’s understanding and instincts for the game. Don’t know this for sure, but it does seem that Colt is a better college QB than Simms ever was, but Simms threw a prettier ball than any passer I have ever seen in the B12. Simm’s most definitely had an NFL arm.

Mr. Whipple ain’t just squeezing the Charmin. He is squeezing defenses with Jacory Harris, Cooper, James, Hankerson, Benjamin, and Epps. Miami’s offense looks great! You think the head coach, who was a great defensive coordinator for so many years, would have the defense firing on cylinders. Who the hell is running that defense now?

    My comment still stands.

Your comment was damn silly, implying that the only reason he would go to USC would be that he’s desperate to leave the state. And that’s patently absurd.

Everyone knows that Jesus is a Red Raider, but for some reason He seems to be pulling for the Longhorns this year. Rajon Henley and Franklin Mitchem are not on the travel squad as reported by the AJ. To spice things up a touch, his backup, Ryan Haliburton, may not be able to go either.

If there’s anywhere Texas has a decisive advantage in this game, it’s with their secondary personnel. We might be able to block their DL, but our WRs must still get open and this is one of the best young secondaries I’ve seen in a while. They’ve got a couple of Browns and Aaron Williams, and
