CHARLIE STRONG: The Right Fit?

As Mack Brown is pushed out to make way for Charlie Strong, Brown tells recruits that he will actively participate in contacting other coaches from other schools if the recruits want to cancel their Texas commitments. This goes in direct contrast to the attitude Brown had when his defensive coordinator Will Muschamp left only a few years earlier. In that instance, Brown touted the University and his own record of success to the recruits.

As news of the Strong hire circulated, Longhorn booster and power broker Red McCombs said that the Strong hire was, "A kick in the face", and that "Strong would make a decent position coach".

As Strong settled into the job, he made contacting Texas high school coaches a priority. After a seminar was hosted for the high school coaches, a news article surfaced where the writer quoted unnamed coaches as saying Strong's performance was a flop.

As Strong was trying to assemble a top flight staff, athletic director Steve Patterson refused to consider paying any buyout for a top offensive coordinator still under contract at another school, even when some very talented coordinators showed interest in joining Strong. This forced Strong to retain his Louisville coordinator Shawn Watson.

This refusal to pay buyouts backfired when a ruse was installed to give Joe Wickline status as offensive coordinator. The resultant lawsuit has been taking up valuable time and energy of the coaching staff, and has also set a precedent where any future coordinators Strong might have in mind will be scared off because they might be abandoned by the university like Wickline has.

As Strong began eliminating the trouble making players from his roster, news articles circulated saying that future recruits wouldn't want to come play for such a strict disciplinarian. This could only hurt Strong's reputation among fence sitting recruits.

As Strong was establishing his program, Athletic Director Patterson was hiking ticket prices, establishing strict rules for season ticket holders, alienating boosters, eliminating key football assistants, eliminating staff meals, and denying Strong's request for player travel dress suits.

As Strong's first season progressed, ESPN writer Paul Finebaum wrote that Charlie Strong was "Losing his locker room". This could only have hurt Strong's ability to recruit, and also lose Strong precious support from fans and boosters. The report by Finebaum was false. He has since admitted he was wrong, but the damage had been done.

As Strong brought in a top ten class for his first full recruiting cycle, Longhorn fans complained that Strong hadn't lived up to the Mack Brown recruiting legacy, even though there is ample and irrefutable proof that many of Mack Brown's highly rated past players were nowhere near the talent rating they were suggested to be. This includes the remnants of Brown's last few recruiting classes who now make up the junior and senior players........many of them replaced or outperformed by the Strong recruited freshmen.

As The Longhorns get routed by Notre Dame to start the 2015 season, fans and writers complain about offensive coordinator Shawn Watson as a "Strong mistake", even though Strong was handcuffed by Patterson's non-buyout policy. Watson (it must be noted) is primarily responsible for bringing in Shane and Sam, two of the highest rated quarterbacks in the country for 2016 and 2017.

Steve Patterson gets fired. This can only make it more difficult for Strong to attract top assistants, as they have no confidence that Strong will be supported by the new athletic director. This can also make it more difficult for Strong to recruit, as the athletic director's approval is a direct reflection on the head football coach's future employment.

If all this isn't enough, now we have rumors spreading that Charlie Strong might jump ship to The University of Miami. These rumors hit just as the season winds down and the top recruiting time hits full gear. This can only hinder further Strong's ability to recruit.

Would it be too much to ask for people to get out of Charlie Strong's way and let him coach?

What the hell is going on?

Why don't the Texas high school coaches like this man? Is it even true?

Why are reporters making crap up? Locker room lost? Miami?

Why was the athletic director of the richest university in college sports pulling the rug out from under Strong's feet at every turn?

Why did Mack Brown try to sabotage Strong's first freshman class?

What the hell is going on?

Can it please stop....at least on the University of Texas level?

I'm beginning to think that Strong is the only sane person connected to Texas Football. Maybe it's a good thing that he doesn't seem to be "The Right Fit".

Be excellent to each other.
