Although Tulsa ran out of time and lost 55-52 to Va Tech in last Saturday's Independence Bowl, Tulsa's O looked good: scoring at least 2 touchdowns on drives of less than 2 minutes and one was, I think, 53 seconds. It was a hurry-up offense that often had the Hokies off-balanced and they had a good mix of run and pass. They spread sideline to sideline; they exploited Tech when the Hokies had only 5 or 6 men in the box; the middle of the field was routinely left wide open.
The O requires the QB to be able to deliver a well-thrown and timed ball (which I hope Gilbert can find/develop in Austin) and receivers who run good routes with decent hands. Our OL will be challenged at times when we are in a 4 wideout formation against a stout DL, but that is typically when Tulsa was able to run on Tech . When we can win the battle in the trenches, our RB's should do very well next year. But if my aunt had balls...
Tulsa's defense and special teams looked poor, but then we did not bring those coaches to Austin. Here is an article about the game: http://espn.go.com/college-football/recap?gameId=400852719
And here are a few key blurbs from it:
Tulsa (6-7) rallied from a three-touchdown deficit in the second half to pull to 55-52 with 3:47 left.
Tulsa's Evans completed 27 of 44 passes for 374 yards and three touchdowns.D'Angelo Brewer ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns.
I liked what I saw from Tulsa's offensive performance and hope Gilbert is able to use duplicate it quickly in Austin. I would be interested in hearing what others saw in this game....Hook 'Em...
