blogpoll – Draft – Week 4

Posted by Scipio Tex on September 27th, 2009 under Football

This week’s picks. Give me your thoughts.

1. Alabama - Complete football team.
2. Florida - Can the Apostle John lead until the resurrection?
3. Texas - The path is clear: win out and it’s Pasadena.
4. Virginia Tech - Rout of Miami lends credibility, but Tyrod Taylor is a liability.
5. OU - Rumors of their demise may be exaggerated.
6. LSU - Ugliest 4-0 in college football.
7. Cincinnati - Gilyard and Pike outstanding, but they don’t have 22 quality starters
8. TCU - Gutty road win over Clemson.
9. USC - Listless against a weak Washington State team.
10. Ohio State - No one I’d rather have when facing a bad Big 10 team than Tressel.
11. Iowa - Legitimate D/special teams with the best speed that Dubuque can offer.
12. Houston - Leach pisses into the wind of victory; Sumlin clock mismanagement forgotten.
13. Boise State - The Oregon blowout of Cal gives them credibility; I still see holes.
14. Oklahoma State - Grambling wins halftime; Houston loss not looking so bad now.
15. Kansas - Impressed against a dangerous USM team.
16. Missouri - Schedule an inside road to the Big 12 North title?
17. Miami - Experienced road adversity and quit; Jacory Harris floaters don’t mix with water.
18. Nebraska - Pelini exorcised his bad decision making with a Directional pummeling.
19. Penn State - You saw it in their body language when Iowa weathered the early TD.
20. Ole Miss - Nice, Nutt. The SEC is to QB play what Switzerland is to rave parties.
21. Oregon - The loss of Thug Life was a gift; rediscovery of Ed Dickson at TE key.
22. Michigan - Struggled mightily with Indiana, but RichRod is getting it together.
23. BYU - Colorado State was a much needed confidence boost.
24. California - Typical Cal. One shit-in-the-pants road loss per year guaranteed.
25. Georgia - Struggled with a mediocre ASU.

Apologies: South Carolina, Auburn, Stanford, South Florida

  1. There is a very clear demarcation line in college football this year — it is the Top Three and then everyone else. The fact that you can legitimately make a case for Va. Tech and LSU as top five teams with the type of QB play that they are getting tells us that.

Mike Leach does not value points or time outs — and it gets him beat at last once a year. And thanks to Twitter, it looks like his players might be getting tired of his act as well.

  2. Looks about right to me. Agree with srr50 that there’s a top 3 … OU might be able to make it a top 4 depending on either Bradford’s successful return (which seems uncertain) or the porn star being able to beat Texas’ D (equally uncertain).

I’d ease Iowa and BSU up a few spots, and probably USC a spot as well(yes I know, but let’s see what happens vs Cal). VaTech too high with Taylor at QB, LSU too high because they’re just not that good. Bottom of top 10

  3. srr50 makes excellent points but I’ll take it a step further and say there should be no teams ranked 4-9. They’re just too shitty. I’ll put Landry Jones and the best O-line in history at #10. I think they’re the best of the rest.
Glad to see the 13 million dollar taint-boil is beginning to fester in Lubbock…

  4. srr50:

I completely agree. I really won’t defend where I slot anyone after the Top 3.

    BeHorn:

Boise St doesn’t really do it for me the way they apparently impress everyone else. I can assure you that if we can somehow play them for a MNC instead of Florida or Alabama, I’m very much for it.

    Iowa is SLOOOOOWWWWWWW.

  5. QB play should put Texas ahead of Alabama in your poll.

Seems every year Longhorn fans fall into pre-OU paranoia.

  6. Art, I’m not so sure. Obviously Colt is a premier QB but McElroy has been fantastic for the Tide. He’s a massive upgrade over Sara Jessica Parker Wilson.

  7. McElroy has been solid, but where would he rank in terms of top QB’s if he played in the Big 12? Sixth?

On a related topic I’d like to see an update to the BC article on the Texas HS QB growth in College Football. Example: a couple weeks ago you had Alabama playing UNT and the #1 QB’s were from the same Texas HS (SL Carroll). When was the last time that happened? Ever?

  8. Watch Texas, Bama, and Florida all finish the season with one loss, with Boise St., TCU, and Houston all going undefeated.

And then Texas and FloriBama play for the NC.

  9. nordberg, I hope your prediction is right. Playing a few BCS teams in September and winning doesn’t legitimate playing teams like Memphis, Rice, New Mexico, New Mexico St, San Jose St, and San Diego St in October and November. The MWC is about as close to major college football as any of these three conferences, but I still doubt TCU would be any better than 4th place if they played in the Big 12 South.

  10. Art:

Given that the Big 12 has 4-5 of the best 10 QBs in the country, I’m not sure that’s very meaningful. McElroy has been better than solid. You need to put your eyes on him in some of these games. He’s for real.

    nordberg:

Now that would be interesting. My fear would be a Bama-Florida rematch, actually.

  11. “On a related topic I’d like to see an update to the BC article on the Texas HS QB growth in College Football.”

Me too, Art. The metroplex alone is chock full of legetimate D1 QB’s. District 5-4A has three stud QB’s at Lake Dallas, Denton Guyer and Denton Ryan. Last year this same district had WF Rider’s Shavodrick Beaver (greatest name evar) who is now GJ Kinne’s understudy at Tulsa (Beav backed out of his verbal commitment to Michigan because of Forcier’s recruitment, I believe).

  12. Yeah, OU is about a dozen spots too high. If they can do to Miami at Land Shark what they did to Tulsa at Owen Field, consider me sold.

“As to Brown–you’ve hit the nail on the head. A good offense should not have to completely shock an opponent with an entirely new offensive concept each time it plays. In a well-schemed offense, if there is enough diversity (including deception and straightforward plays) in its packages–run preferably from the same or similar formations–that should

Great stuff. That last table really is stunning – a yard less per play and 2 yards less per pass attempt. I’d say they’ve got some work to do if they’re gonna win a MNC.

You guys seem to be coming around yet – good to see the Jayhawk love over here at AT.

    As for this…

Colorado was able to score at-will against the Jayhawkers defense.

You’re better than that. Don’t give me that ESPN, Colorado scored 34 points, so KU’s defense must have been atrocious, etc…

That was a truly horrible loss

I don’t see anyone on the coaching staff leaving in the near future. Matt Moore is a spread O-Line coach, and Tech is the primary spread-to-pass offense in the nation.

That said, no one can predict these things. Seth Littrell was a surprise.
