  1. Good stuff. I feel like Iowa is probably not as good as some of the teams below them (Mizzou, Nebraska, Oregon, South Cockalina, et al.) but what are you gonna do. Lots of mediocrity out there.

  2. Houston should have dropped out. Who have they beaten? Okie State and Tech.

Both Ohio State and USC are better than Va Tech and Miami. TCU and Okie State are too high. There is no way that UofH should be in the top 25 after losing to lowly UTEP especially since GaTech, South Florida, and Georgia are left out. I’m questioning whether BYU deserves to be in the top 25 after their loss to FSU. FSU is really bad. Also, some mention should be given to undefeated Wisconsin. I’m really tired of Boise.

Come on Scipio, you’re better than that to include Cougar high in the top 25.

We are going to learn a lot about some teams this weekend.

    Michigan goes to Iowa
    Wisky goes to tOSU

    Oregon goes to UCLA
Stanford goes to Oregon State(two pac 10 games where the road team will be favored which is always dangerous)

    Auburn goes to Arkansas
    Neb goes to Mizzou
Bama goes to Ole Miss (think Ole miss is overrated but something tells me the Nuttster will have them ready to play)

  4. Houston should have dropped out. Who have they beaten? Okie State and Tech.

    and…

Come on Scipio, you’re better than that to include Cougar high in the top 25.

By that reasoning, Okie State shouldn’t be ranked. Lost at home to UH. Right?

  5. if you use that logic , dismissing texas tech, then who has texas beat? You have to keep houston in because they have a win over a top 5 team on the road, and a win over a good tech team…. Do they not understand that when they dismiss tech and okie st, they are dismissing us…. those are going to be our signature wins i hope the pollsters dont think the way you guys do, otherwise we will get left out again

  6. Groundhogday said:

I can’t totally disagree because Okie State has struggled in every game except for the Georgia game. You could drop BYU, UH, Okie State, and possibly OU. and include S Florida, Gtech, and Wisky.

With that reasoning, why do you have Ole Miss ahead of South Carolina?

I don’t think there are 25 teams that deserve to be “ranked.”

That said, the NCAA basketball committee question always should be a consideration: “Which team (of a given group) would you not want to play?” LSU, USC, don’t want to see. VT, UC, TCU, Iowa, Boise, less of a problem.

Boise is living off of beating OU three years ago, because of the thought that they would do it again… that, and now Oregon finding itself after clearly not being ready to play the first week. Can’t imagine Texas, playing at home, struggling in the third quarter with UC Davis.

“Do they not understand that when they dismiss tech and okie st, they are dismissing us…. those are going to be our signature wins i hope the pollsters dont think the way you guys do, otherwise we will get left out again”

OU losing and A&M getting pounded pretty much mean, IMO, that Texas will have to win out. One-loss Texas, depending on the loss, might hang in the human polls but will get torpedoed by the computers.

  9. Groundhogday said:

    October 4th, 2009 at 10:25 am

    Travis,

If Texas wins out, they are going to Pasadena. However, if they drop a game there is no way they play for the National Title. If you have a problem with that, take it up with Belmont for the OOC schedule. Our conference is what it is this year. Not very good.

  10. So then we should be thankful that our conference isnt very good, because in 05′ it wasnt very good and it all worked out…. So here is to hoping that you all are right and we have no problems.

  11. Groundhogday said:

    October 4th, 2009 at 10:30 am

    Bob,

I agree with you completely. I would not want to play USC or Ohio State, but rather a TCU or Boise. The real wild card is cincy, but there are some big east teams that could beat them. Namely, Pitt, WVA, or S Florida. All those teams have some athletes.

Oregon will get exposed perhaps this weekend.

  12. Oregon exposed as what? They already got exposed once.

I have no problem with UT running the table and getting a shot at FLA / Bama and I also, depending on context, have no problem dropping one and not getting a shot at FLA / Bama. That seems fair.

I am thinking of that long run by Florida State when the ACC was smaller and much weaker. They played salty OOC games but beat the hell out of everybody intra-conference (Mack and Greg receiving a lot of these).

A lot of the complaining has to do with poll vs. power poll mechanics.

  13. Groundhogday said:

    October 4th, 2009 at 10:53 am

Should have been more specific, Rip. Oregon will get exposed as a “good team that Boise beat.” Bob also made a reference that Oregon has appeared to right the ship. I happen to disagree. We shall see. I think UCLA beats them this weekend.

  14. Exactly. Playing the ___ beat ____ game gets silly fairly quickly once you’re a few weeks into the season. As does a musing that “Ohio St is better than Miami” when there’s absolutely no indication that Ohio State would ever play to win in a game that matters.

The debate centers around resume ranking (which had multiple pollsters with U of H in their TOP FIVE last week) vs. reputational polling (of which Florida and Texas are currently beneficiaries).

Most people come down in one camp or the other.

The notion that you can find some internal logical consistency in polls actually tends to lead to the Boise St’s being ranked in the top five.

At the end of the day, it’s a qualitative assessment.

  15. RT @AP_Top25: Two conferences — SEC and Big 12 — have 12 of the AP_Top25 teams That’s what early nonconference games can do

  16. BTW, AP drops Houston out of Top 25. Ranked #27.

  17. What are Houston sports radio callers going to talk about if the Texans win easily today and UH no longer has its fans talking about getting into the SEC or Big 12? Charlie’s going to have to rewrite all of his program notes tonight.

Although it will be satisfying hearing the Cougar Bandwagon fall into the ditch tomorrow about 30 seconds into the show. Those Cougar High fans were starting to get really annoying.

“The notion that you can find some internal logical consistency in polls actually tends to lead to the Boise St’s being ranked in the top five.”

There was a lot of pre-game squawk about Oregon being Boise’s only quality opponent, and Boise played that game like they knew it as well. Meanwhile, Oregon looked like a BCS team that was treating it like its first game. Even so, Boise didn’t come away with the kind of scoreboard edge you would expect given Oregon’s horrible offensive effort.

I’m not saying Boise’s terrible, but the people who have ranked them that highly based on the fact they haven’t lost are, IMO, making a mistake.

I wouldn’t have a problem with making room for Boise in a playoff scenario of decent depth (at least eight teams) but not being slingshot into the BCSCG because every team in the SEC or B12 ended up taking a loss.

  19. I wouldn’t have a problem with making room for Boise in a playoff scenario of decent depth (at least eight teams) but not being slingshot into the BCSCG because every team in the SEC or B12 ended up taking a loss.

    Bingo.

  20. Cincy & Miami should be ahead of USC in my humble opinion. Cincy is beating everyone they play like a drum and Miami’s loss is much more understandable and justifiable than is USC’s. UW did not win one single game last year. That kind of loss is inexcusable and should have the other 1 loss teams ahead of them.

  21. Orangechip, see Scip’s comment re: reputational rankings.

  22. bigdukesix said:

What I don’t understand is why the unwashed masses always want to rank based solely on losses. Whichever one loss team has the “best” loss gets ranked highest. Why? Justify yourselves.

If you’re going to rank on resume, shouldn’t you be looking at the whole package, not just losses?

geogia tech would beat the dog shit out of cougar high

  24. Scipio, I’d like you to explain your rational for Texas as #3. No reason IMO they aren’t #1 or #2. I’ve always prided myself as not seeing things through Burnt Orange glasses, so I’m struggling with you putting us number three in your poll. I really like our experience on offense, and our speed, talent, and coaching on D. What gives amigo?

  25. Art -

I’d accept any order from those three.

Obviously, it’s an academic exercise since Florida and Alabama play an elimination game at season’s end, but I’m rewarding Alabama for their play on the field against some decent to good teams (Arkansas, Va Tech, Kentucky). Alabama is the best blend of resume good and qualitative good. That doesn’t mean Texas and Florida aren’t better - in fact I think they may be - but they’re unproven relative to the Tide.

The month of October will tell us all we need to know about Texas.

  26. Scattershooting: are Fozzy and Felix Jones the same player?
Was Curb your Enthusiasm a winner tonight?

  27. Chip - “Cincy is beating everyone they play like a drum and Miami’s loss is much more understandable and justifiable than is USC’s.”

Not sure about Miami being “much” more understanding than SC. Miami was playing its starting QB, SC wasn’t. And while Miami lost to a team that’s materially better than Washington, the Huskies nevertheless are playing a considerably better brand of football this year (so far, anyway).

I am no lover of OU by any stretch. They will beat my boys at our house. They are better than 24th.

They lose once more this year to Texas, win the rest, and Bob will win a bowl.

I’m sure next year he will have “The Best Sooner Team Ever”

  29. I thought Florida’s victory at Kentucky was much more impressive than Bama’s. Had Tebow not gone down they could have easily put up 60. They gave up less than 200 yards to Kentucky, who managed to put up 300 on Bama. I guess this is a bit of a nit pick using stats, but Florida really softened Kentucky up for Bama, but Bama didn’t seem to have the ability to dominate a team that should have been ripe for the picking. Ok, the VT victory looks impressive, but that was way back in September. I think Bama drops one if they get caught sleeping early like they did against Kentucky.

  30. Art:

Felix and Fozzy are both injured a lot. But Felix is a few orders of magnitude better. I love CYE. Enjoyed the coin flip on Lymes Disease.

  31. Both similar size players with tons of skill. Both #28. Maybe brothers then.

With all the buildup for the CYE reunion show…. I expected you know… more reunion.

  32. UT’s OOC is never very strong, but it’s not Belmont’s fault that Arkansas backed out this year.

  33. И правда креатив…супер!
