2013 DE Daeshon Hall Wavering on Texas?
The athletic DE from Lancaster committed to the Longhorns in late February after a whirlwind recruitment, but has since made visits to Baylor's pro day and had an unofficial visit to Texas A&M.; Hall may have been accompanying teammates and it's not clear what his intentions were, but where there are smokescreens, there may be fire. Mack Brown has not tolerated recruits making visits - unofficial or otherwise - while committed to Texas, but a thin year at DE in-state and an inability to grab a commitment from Alief's Torrodney Prevot , may be granting us a tolerance born of necessity.
However, some recent rumors suggest that other Texas schools probably aren't our ultimate concern.
A reader with some connections in the Pacific Northwest e-mailed me a sampling of the chatter from various UW sources that Hall's family may be trying to get back to Seattle and, should that happen, Daeshon will open up a West Coast recruitment to Washington, Oregon, and USC.
Whether that ultimately bears out or not, it's not unreasonable to think that Hall is currently exploring his options and may be experiencing commitment remorse. Should he decommit, expect Texas to redouble their efforts on Prevot, take another look at the 2013 DE class in-state, and start exploring OOS options.

it's been mentioned
that uber-recruiter tosh lupoi is going to stay on him til signing day no matter what. doesn’t look great right now. who else is out there besides a guy like mike mitchell?
by mattw on May 10, 2025 8:48 PM CDT reply actions
Someone will emerge as a senior
in-state. Always do.
As for Mitchell, he has to show he can play as well as he tests and it’s not clear to me that he can play with a hand down in college.

Would hate to loose him
But that goes with these early commits. It’s a long time till next signing day. Stuff happens that can change minds. Like the family moving west. Hope he stays with us, but wish him well, as long as he’s up front about it.

Likewise, I'd hate to lose him
But I’m totally comfortable with this staff spotting a DE or two this spring or in the fall . . . we struck late on a double fistful of players last winter including eight (I believe) who had committed to other schools.
Also, today’s uber recruit sometimes turns into Taylor Bible or Traylon Shead. IIRC, Kenny Vaccaro was hardly a 5-star recruit when he signed. Same with Carrington Byndom — both look like they’ll end up as No. 1 or No. 2 draft picks. Tray Allen was a 5-star recruit who, in his fifth season, got beat out by a player four months out of high school.
I’m not going to panic on whether Hall honors his pledge or not. We pay Oscar Giles and Manny Diaz the big bucks to find a worthy replacement, if one is needed. I’m confident they will.

Never good to lose a player your coaches want
And every other coach wants. Get all of the great players and then play the odds that half of them will pan out. Sometimes the uber recruits turn into Vince Young, Sergio Kindle and Alex Okafor.

-1 on Okafor in same sentence as Kindle, Young
Change isn't good or bad it just "is". Don Draper of Madmen

we'll see
technically he was an All-American last year. I think he’ll reach Kindle level this year.

Should he decommit, expect Texas to redouble their efforts on Prevot, take another look at the 2013 DE class in-state, and start exploring OOS options.
I would assume they are doing all of these right now.

I have faith in the these coaches.
Should he decommit, or demonstrate an unsuitable level of reliability, our coaches will find someone to fill his shoes Our coaches are incredibly resourceful. They will fill that spot, if necessary, with great talent and incredible ‘want to’.
Hook ’em!

Agreed
Especially when it comes to defensive talent, we won’t come up short. You know, in the one hopefully two seasons we’re able to keep Manny before he bolts to turn some mid-level BCS program into a perennial powerhouse. Please god don’t let him get hired by another Big-12 school.

Any possibility
of Naashon Hughes growing into a DE? If he puts on 10 pounds as a senior in HS he’ll be the same size Orakpo was coming out.
by llogg on May 11, 2025 7:58 AM CDT reply actions
Anything is possible.
But the coaches would prefer to recruit position ready guys.
by Scipio Tex on May 11, 2025 1:01 PM CDT up reply actions
my uneducated opinon
But I think there is a chase Naashon blows up as a recruit. LSU offered him. They have a good eye for athletes that end up on defense. The question is where does his body go. He is a 6’4" safety at the moment. Personally, he is under-valued. Mostly because nobody knows where the hell he will play
by codaxx on May 11, 2025 3:35 PM CDT up reply actions
I think you have a point. Pretty sure USC is either going to offer or already has on top of the LSU interest. It will be interesting to see if Hughes the Younger will be content to pay his own way for a year and forgo some pretty attractive alternatives.

Per 247
Staff has notified Quincy Russell that there will not be a spot for him in the 2013 class and that they do not feel like DT is a position of need at this time.
Lots of intrigue with the remaining spots here. Not sure if that means Vincent Taylor is due for an offer, if they feel like they are going to fill up the remaining slots and don’t have room for a DT…

That's a shame
Guy did everything they asked him to from all reports. Would be valuable recruiting PR to take him on. Maybe give him Kyle Kriegel or Taylor Doyle’s scholarship.
by llogg on May 11, 2025 8:53 AM CDT up reply actions
Maybe, maybe not...
Just rumor, but there is definitely the possibility that with finals over, the staff knew that he did not meet the academic qualifications he had to.
by Big(g) Ern on May 11, 2025 11:58 AM CDT up reply actions
If true
then it’s on him, but why would they throw in the bit about DT not being a need position?
by llogg on May 11, 2025 12:24 PM CDT up reply actions
With an 85 man roster you have to make sure your offers are guys
who can truly help you. I remember comments about how dominating he was and then saw they were from his juco coach this spring. Only problem is TV is not exactly loaded in the o-line right now and a friend who coaches in state college felt Russell isn’t a must have recruit.

The pretext is meaningless, IMO
It sounds to me like Bo Davis kicked the tires and wasn’t impressed. We may just skip out on a DT take.
by Scipio Tex on May 11, 2025 1:03 PM CDT up reply actions
eval
there was talk that he was not impressive last yr. Perhaps, he just has not progressed liek many had hoped. I would not close the door on hi sat the moment. They could be waiting to see how he looks this yr. Plus remember he will come in as a junior, so the bar should be higher.

Vincent Taylor to Baylor
Committed today.

Good for him
but I believe he’ll pull an Adrian Colbert if we decide to offer.

I'm at best an amateur recruitnik...
…so this question may be silly, but isn’t a year in which in-state talent at a position is thin a great year to focus on signing players at that position from out-of-state? I’m a big fan of local sourcing when it comes to restaurants, but for an elite program with the strongest brand in college football, doesn’t it make sense to get the best talent available?
by RJphrenic on May 11, 2025 9:07 AM CDT reply actions
Yes, it does make sense
I think we struggled to find national DE recruits with a natural ties and we liked the two top guys in-state.
by Scipio Tex on May 11, 2025 12:51 PM CDT up reply actions
it is a balance
In the end you want to maintain in-state pipelines. DKR said something about Texas kids like “maybe they will think twice about crossing the red river” after ending a long OU winning streak. Mack got Texas back to a perennial 10 win team by locking down Texas. If it is close you pick an in-state kid.
by codaxx on May 11, 2025 3:42 PM CDT up reply actions
And it's important to remember
2013 class NSD is still 8.5 months away. That’s a lot of time for someone to blow up and/or to go OOS if the right circumstances make it attractive. Plus Hall, like Ridgeway last year, may stay the course.
