First 2014 commitment? WR Lorenzo Joe per 247
Per 247's Blake Munroe, Abilene Cooper WR Lorenzo Joe has committed to UT.... for the 2014 class. In what seems to be a massive change of recruiting tactics, it would appear that the staff has sent out committable offers to a number of 2014 recruits including 5 defensive backs, RB Donald Catalon and others according to Gerry Hamilton. No more waiting until Junior Day for your offer. We are up and running on 2014 before the books are closed on 2013. It sounds as if a second commitment could be done by the close of business today, as Munroe is also reporting that Eisenhower RB Catalon has said he is considering calling the staff this afternoon and officially committing to UT.
I am guessing the increased presence of certain schools from the southeastern portion of the contiguous United States may have led Mack and the staff to decide that the old ways were no longer going to work with Nick Saban personally offering a number of the top recruits in the State.
Thoughts?
Be excellent to each other.

Congrats to Lorenzo
Thoughts on him as a prospect? I don’t know the first thing about the 2014 kids.
From a competitive standpoint, offering kids earlier seemed like something we were going to have to start doing. I don’t think it’s good for college football, though.

Looks like...
there are reports that OL Demetrius Knox, DBs Nick Watkins, Edwin Freeman, Jamal Adams and Tony Brown, and QB Jerrod Heard (who is supposed to visit UT with family next week) have all been offered.

all of this is from 247, but most of their reports are citing conversations they had with the kids, so it doesn’t appear to be wild speculation.

247 is pretty accurate in what they report
I agree that it looks like Mack isn’t taking any chances with agricultural opening up Texas to the SEC…I really don’t have a problem with locking up some of the most valuable commitments the class two years down the road. I don’t want to see us go younger than that, and I doubt Mack would ever get into robbing the cradle, like some other pretty well-known programs do.
