Longterm Longhorn Offensive Vision

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

I want to be clear that I respect Shawn Watson, particularly as it comes to developing quarterbacks, but also as an offensive designer and play caller. I want to be clear, that as a longtime fan of a Big XII school, I am more unfamiliar and thus prone to being uncomfortable with the philosophy of offense as well as the style of offense being implemented under Watson. I also understand that this offense, both the QB as well as the OL, are just getting started, and are particularly raw at this point. Things looked pointedly different with David Ash at QB.

Having said that, I'm not sure, but it seems possible that it would be better for the success of Charlie Strong's program, (which I am jealous to see succeed because of all of the incredible character qualities he possesses), and thus for the University of Texas, for Watson to learn a more modern offense.

Charlie Strong values Watson (among other reasons) because he protects the rock and thus keeps the defense fresh, in addition to being able to move the chains when needed. Watson doesn't prioritize offensive ambition over controlling the ball and the clock. Those are both excellent things to value.

The truth is I'm not convinced that this style of offense is the best direction for us, particularly when there are possibly OCs available who can both protect the rock and have offensive ambition. You can see in the NFL the ability to implement a variety of offensive strategies, playing hurry up at one point and wasting time at others. I'm not alluding to the end of the UCLA game right now. If they felt the best way to eat up the clock was to keep the offense rolling, they know what's best for this offense, which is in its infancy right now.

It's possible for Watson to evolve, but is it possible for him to grow in the modern, fast paced, offensive schemes, while still retaining the bread and butter of what he is currently doing?

Does Watson need to evolve? This young offense moved the chains against a pretty big and fast team this weekend when it needed to.

Feel free to tell me to shut up because the program is just getting started and to leave the decisions to the qualified parties. I am optimistic about the direction of our team. The difference in the OL from BYU to UCLA was marked and I'm sure they will keep getting better. Swoopes has completed not only easy passes, but some impressive ones as well. I'm so glad we have two weeks to get ready for Kansas? and only one for OU and Baylor.

Hook em!

Be excellent to each other.
