What am I watching?

I expected the O-line to be sub-par - and they ARE.

But, what is this defense?

Season is not going to be pretty

Defense

Where is the tauted defense we have been led to think we have. I am very disappointed so far.

QB?

Why hasn’t Case played? I do not understand the coach’s passion for Ash. If Case is as good as Mack has said, where is he???

Seriously?

Ash played just fine.

Fags you are, all of you

Dont judge this defense by the first game. you’ve seen all you need to see to envision a completely dominant unit.

by Vasherized on Sep 1, 2025 9:53 PM CDT reply actions

Um

Going to have to disagree with you. We played ok defensively, but we struggled to contain Smith and the secondary had a couple of massive brain farts. The first TD was two cases of bad tackling and two cases of bad angles by safeties. Those are the kind of mistakes a sharp defense shouldn’t be making. Correctable, but not good. Second long TD was a mix-up in coverage and those happen sometimes too, but they don’t seem to happen to LSU or Bama or any of the other schools we want to be thought peers of. Defense is going to be ok and probably very good by the end of the year though, and the secondary isn’t really my worry. LBs didn’t look great in short coverage, although it did seem like Edmond got a lot of snaps in every single set, which is encouraging.

by Toadvine on Sep 2, 2025 5:41 AM CDT up reply actions

FWIW, LSU gave up two scoring passes to UNT last night, including an 80 yarder, and won by 27 (vs our 20). So maybe those things also happen to LSU sometimes, as well.

Not saying that we compare to LSU right now (I really have no idea), but you can’t legitimately make the case that we don’t based on a single game for both teams.

because, although I think Ash should be the starter, until he can learn to pass, we MUST have the D clicking on all cylinders.

Disagree with use of feminine as a negative. I can think of several feminine Longhorns I’m rather fond of.

I would agree, but

He looked better, but still doesn’t seem to have the touch on deep balls. Was late on a number of throws. He completed a lot of short passes today, averaging like 8 yards a pass. I think he looks like a capable game manager at this point, but I don’t necessarily see the natural, native spark of throwing talent that makes me think he’ll be a great passer. Maybe you can learn that, and he’ll become one. But then maybe he doesn’t need to be a great passer for us to have success.

by Flodeth on Sep 1, 2025 10:26 PM CDT reply actions

Agree. Late on his 2 biggest passes

A couple other easy throws to Shipley were more of an adventure than they should have been.

by Horncasting on Sep 2, 2025 12:00 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

It's the first game

And if you don’t think that’s means anything, you should’ve watched Aaron Murray, as good of a QB as there is in the SEC. He’s just starting his junior year and he’ll probably set the Georgia record for touchdown passes this year. That said, most of his deep passes were WAAYY off today. . . .

by Cirque Du Salado on Sep 2, 2025 12:19 AM CDT up reply actions

It would be FANTASTIC if he’d averaged 8 yds per pass. In real life, he averaged under 6. We rushed for more yards per attempt than that.

Listening to the broadcast in the first half, it sounded like Ash missed high on two mid-range throws. He also missed on all of his long attempts.

Still, overall I’d call this a great START for Ash’s season. He was accurate in the short game, and he didn’t force it into bad spots. He threw a couple away and tucked and ran a few times instead of giving up turnovers. I suspect he improved in pre-snap reads, too. I’m calling it solid progress and something positive overall to build on.

by Stiendam Hall on Sep 2, 2025 12:04 PM CDT up reply actions

actually

one of those was intentionally high. He put it over the LB and under the Safety, it was a pretty good throw to a wr doubled. It certainly could have been caught, but another case of it was a bit high and wr"s hands a little weak on the play. I questioned the read more than the throw.

by codaxx on Sep 2, 2025 1:38 PM CDT up reply actions

And, by the way

I fucking loved the play by DJ Monroe to get into the end zone. So easy to fall down there, but so much physical and mental toughness to stay up and then fall in to the end zone.

by Noonan100 on Sep 1, 2025 10:44 PM CDT up reply actions

My opinion.

We’re looking at a 9-4 team this year. Could even be 8-5. They have a lot of improving to do on OL, QB, and somewhere on the D couldn’t tell exactly. It wasn’t horrible but it wasn’t that good either.

I seemed like we ran better to the Tackles out and really struggled with inside running. Ash was late on the deep throws so they ended up under thrown. I can’t put a finger on the D but it seemed like sloppyness. I think they can still be great but it was really sloppy.

Got a feed working for the 2nd half

Left 7 points on the floor due to kicking. 44-17 would sound a whole lot better.
The fumble was ugly, but defense stiffened up and it cost us nothing.
Ash looked much more confident compared to last year, with yet more room to grow.
Brown and Bergeron looked good as the game wore on.
OL started slow, but wore down the defense.
Wyoming has some talent, and a decent coach / scheme, so weigh that.
Defense was a little ragged at first, but did fine overall.

They have some work to do, but there’s no need to panic.

by Levander Williams on Sep 1, 2025 10:28 PM CDT reply actions

Early thoughts from Section 30 with no benefit of replay

- The run game looked very solid any time we either pulled OL or ran some sort of constraint/jet sweep action behind the run. Our ability to impose our will between the tackles was very poor.

- Ash was OK. He was pretty smart with the ball, but my biggest complaint was him being late to pull the trigger with one or more guys screaming open deep. Probably cost us 2 long TDs.

- It looked like communication issues hurt us as much as anything in the secondary, but there’s a lot to tighten up there.

- He may have had an assignment bust on a TD, but Kenny V is the player Tampa Bay thought they drafted in Mark Barron. Special talent.

- Loved the authority Monroe showed on his runs – he’s not just going to meekly surrender all his touches to Daje.

- Mike Davis is still 0-for-career on jump balls, but at least he raised his ‘cumulative career yards coming back to fight for an underthrow’ to almost four tonight.

The long pass wasn’t the primary! What the hell were you looking at? Ash did GREAT!

The play calling was questionable, frankly. Were we just TRYING to force the issue between the tackles? Wyoming was, basically, stacking the box with 8 – all night.

Ash was not great by any stretch

His timing was off. Period.

Just because he was much better than last year does not mean great.

by Zzzizzzy on Sep 1, 2025 10:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep

I don’t know how anyone can argue he was way late and missed what would have been the 2 longest passes of the night. He also had 2 questionable throws early, with at least one almost picked off.

Definite improvement as the game went on in terms of decision making. Threw a few away and took a sack instead of forcing a bad throw. But almost no playmaking in the second half. Still lists of room for improvement.

comp 70 percent

Of his throws. Underthrew Davis on a long ball that was PI. Sorry, but that is pretty good. Personally, it looked like a pretty conservative passing game and Ash earned a solid B. I thot decision making was excellent. Not realy sure what the bitching is about. Yes, he was late on a hook to Davis on first series, but this is the guy you prayed he would be all summer. Now that he got there, we need to start bitching about the next step. Can we hold that off until game 4-5

for the Wyoming game, that is—obviously he’s been sacked in his career.

by vortic on Sep 2, 2025 4:43 AM CDT up reply actions

It’s worth noting that Ash didn’t redshirt. Vince and Colt did. Remember how they looked their first game of their second year on campus? All Vince could do was roll out and it seems like Colt was pretty much sheltered until he threw a couple of fade routes for TDs against OU.Given where Ash is in the development cycles, I thought he played great. . . No, he wasn’t Matt Barkley. But someone who’s been on campus 13 months, I give him a gold star.

by Cirque Du Salado on Sep 2, 2025 12:25 AM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Agree on many points Nobis

Just got back from the game.

1) Ash was essentially the AJ McCarron people have called for. He didn’t make stupid mistakes. Not the worst of starts for him. He didn’t do anything to impress mightily, but he also didn’t force anything stupid.

2) To me, the biggest concern is that I didn’t see the WRs getting any separation. Goodwin was invisible, and despite having man coverage for nearly the entire game, the WRs were simply not getting open. Credit Ash for not forcing anything.

3) Santos is an animal on special teams.

4) Defense lost a lot up the middle, and I think many of us figured it would take a game or two to have Cobbs, Edmond and others get comfortable. It wasn’t the dominating game that we hoped for, but the people crapping on the defense are being too hasty.

by Big(g) Ern on Sep 1, 2025 11:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Loved everything I saw on special teams outside of the FG's

We absolutely flew down and arrived with attitude on kick coverage, the kickoffs were high and deep, and we looked like we wanted to put hats on guys and knock hem out of the way in the return game.

We’ve been sorely lacking in guys with STs attitude in the last couple of seasons – playing at this level will give us a big edge that we’ve lacked of late.

Couldn’t agree more and couldn’t be happier about it.

by Cirque Du Salado on Sep 2, 2025 12:27 AM CDT up reply actions

Agree

You and I saw the same thing. Our WRs, and I’m including Shipley here although he’s by far the best of the bunch, don’t really get open very well. They aren’t big and they aren’t fast — Shipley at least is a good route runner, but Davis is lazy on his routes when he isn’t the primary and doesn’t get separation when he is. Our recruiting at WR hasn’t been AS bad as it has been at TE, but we are really struggling at the position. Not a single game-breaker in the bunch.

interesting game

1. didn’t really look deep until late which didn’t make the safeties respect the deep ball
2. offensive line didn’t really blow guys up early but seemed like they kind of got better as the game wore on
3. Ship was used almost as an extension to the run game early on
4. late throws as remarked above
5. defense didn’t wrap up after initial hit
6. secondary which was supposed to be strength accounted for some major lapses
Positives
1. run shut down
2. Santos sighting
3. Ash didn’t have problems throwing shallow and good judgement throwing the ball away as well as running at times
4. Bergeron is the short yardage back/Brown has better vision
5. Monroe was impressive as a changeup back as well as returner (bet he breaks a few for tds)

I am not so sure that MB is not the short yardage back. I thot he ran with more power at the line. JoeB is a beast when he gets going but I thot he was clearly the second best running back. He seems to hit his stride about 2 yds after the LOS. He got going in the 4th Quarter.

Agreed

but I’d note that it was Bergeron who put this game away and he did it pretty definitively. For general-purpose needs I like Malcolm best but in the second half of a two-score game against a team with inferior line depth, Big Joe’s an awesome asset.

UTEP

How can a school at which 80% of the student body has a last name ending in “z” or a vowel not have a better kicking game?

As for our game … From my seats, Ash looked like he was playing not to make mistakes, and I am OK with that right now. His slow trigger-finger on several deep balls could be due to that mindset. Compare his performance to the WYO QB’s 2 INTs when under pressure. THAT is what we cannot have from our QB’S (see, e.g., 2010-2011).

I had the same thought – he was wanting to be sure the guy was open (which, of course, on a deep ball gives the D more time to ensure he isn’t).

Still, for Ash the most important stat has started well: TD’s 1, INT’s 0.

One thing I liked

Mack’s post game presser. He was more candid, more relaxed, and far less defensive/condescending than I’ve heard him in years past after games where everything didn’t go right. He even made a fairly relaxed crack about the egregious out of bounds hit call on Cobbs, which I don’t think he’d have done in years past.

It may not matter much in the grand scheme of things, but I think Mack’s new attitude is good for the team. And I think his attitude tonight speaks to genuine confidence in his guys.

Yes.

Zzzizzzy – Relax. Or remonstrate and menstruate elsewhere. Seriously, we get it. You have agita. Quit telling us.

David Ash – Blew a couple of TDs on some deep balls by under-throwing some balls that could have used a bit more trajectory and distance. He also missed Mike on a slow read in the back of the end zone.. He also made HUGE ass leaps in maturity and did some very nice things. And he’s like 9 years old.

Game 1 against a not shitty team and we handled them. No offense to Ash but I’d give away HenryJames for their QB.

Looking forward to Drew, Scipio, nobis, et al. after their re-watch.

Ash

I was really happy with Ash. He looked much, much better than last year and he seemed calm and confident. He made a couple of nice throws on the run and was generally accurate. The throw to Shipley for the TD almost got away from him but ended up working out. I give him a solid B+. Loved Brown and Bergeron. Thought our OTs played well and our OGs and C didn’t. All in all, pretty happy with the offense.

Keep name-calling, but...

if you watched almost any of the other top-25 games today other than the OU game, you will see that we have a very long way to go in order to compete. I know that we are one game in, but as of this weekend, we are only the 4th best team in the conference, not to mention the nation.

The defense is what is supposed to keep us in games this year while Ash continues to improve. Alabama’s holding Michigan to fewer points than we allowed Wyoming to score tells me that the off-season lauding of our defense was premature. If you don’t like that comparison, then analyze us vs. the rest of the top-25. Over 3/4 of the top-25 won by a larger margin, and many like Oregon only allowed late scores because they coasted after a dominating first half. Wyoming thought they were still in the game in the 4th quarter.

I’m glad we won by 20, and I want believe that next week will be better. But your glass-full assessment is the stuff of fairy tales.

by Zzzizzzy on Sep 2, 2025 3:03 AM CDT reply actions

Maybe you like to be coddled and tucked in at night

But aside from Michigan, none of the other “top 25” matchups are a good comp with ours.. Arkansas st. (oregon’s opponent) is not a bowl bound program this year. I could give less of a shit what margin we won by. We aren’t gonna be completely at 100% efficiency the first game of the season, with offensive linemen in diff positions. Regardless, that 82 yard TD pass by Wyoming was a freak occurence. If you read anything more than that into it you are just nitpicking. Personally, its a non issue, and something I wasn’t even pissed off at while watching the game. Those things happen, and aren’t indicative of any future weaknesses. Might as well be 37-10 as far as I’m concerned

Just NOT True

Outside teams ranked 1, 2, & 3 there just aren’t any dominant performances. Certainly a few big wins for the likes of Clemson & MSU, but far from dominant. As for Oregon’s performance, we know there hurry up offense and the commodities they had coming back on offense. Not a shocker for them to hang 50+ on Arky State. Texas doesn’t have that offense.

WVU v. Marshall – basically same thing as Oregon. Not shocking they lit up the scoreboard.

OU struggled with UTEP. S.Car scrapes by Vandy…certainly a tester for a first game, but if you’re a Gamecock, you’re utimately happy getting the win, but can’t feel good about you chances of a 0 or 1 loss season now. Wisconsin & Stanford almost poo the bed against Nothern Iowa and San Jose St. Florida looks shaky vs. Bowling Green.

Ok St, K-St, Arky & Fla St. beat up on Div II teams. Shocker. Georgia doesn’t put away the worst Div I team until the 4th quarter.

That pretty much covers your top 25. Again, the best 3-4 teams performed like there rankings. A little early to write us off as the 4th best team in our conference after this game considering OU looked terrible, OK St & K-St played high school teams, and we know what a Holdgerson offense will do to inferior teams.

Yes, we need to get a lot better if we’re seriously going to make a run at a BCS bowl. We knew we had holes coming into this game. We still have them. This team just proved what we already know. We’re going to have to play good defense and grind out some close games against better competition in order to win the conference title. Our defense was fine outside of one 84 yard touchdown. That’s fixable with the talent we have. Our offense isn’t going to light up the scoreboard and we’re playing an SEC style game. Anyways, get a grip.

You must have watched a different Top 25

I come to BC because I enjoy getting a realistic, informed analysis of the game. Some of what’s written here might not be aligned exactly with what I saw/am seeing, but that’s okay because I’m not looking for affirmation; but rather informed, non-hysterical opinion.

You’re certainly entitled to your constant, overbearingly miserable opinion of what you saw; but don’t get your fucking panties in a wad when someone calls “bullshit” on your bullshit.

Tell you what – why don’t you tell us exactly the kind of numbers you wanted to see from this game so that we all know exactly what you would consider a success.

Things look pretty rosy for me

Our offense seems to be exactly where we said it would be: long, sustained drives that eat up clock and end with a score (I especially liked how we took erased half of the third quarter in one drive).

We didn’t turn the ball over (save for a botched snap that I’m willing to give the benefit of the doubt to), were pretty solid in the run (which got more solid as the game went on and Wyoming’s tiredness started to show), and were decent in the passing game.

Everyone on offense seems to be better than they were last year. DJ Monroe was fighting for yards after contact, our only tight end who made a catch had a huge effort to gain a first down… I even saw Mike Davis throw a mean block and try to catch balls that weren’t hitting him in the numbers!

I was pretty happy with Ash’s performance. I’ll take 20-27 for 156-1-0 any day if we can get two 100-yard rushers.

Our OL didn’t seem to have much success imposing our will through sheer force, but they got better as the game went on and were quite effective on pulling plays. And the fact that they gave up 0 sacks? Cherry on top.

Sad that Shipley’s perfect record of TD passes ended today—just a bit sooner on the pass and it would’ve stayed alive.

As for defense, I don’t have the knowhow to really talk intelligently here. It looks like there were some issues in the secondary, not for a lack of talent—I’m reasonably confident that’ll get shored up in time for Dallas. Our DL was able to consistently get pressure, and the people we expected to play well did.

So in conclusion, I saw basically exactly what I expected to see, which is a good thing (and is a lot more than can be said for our openers last year and the year before). We’re no means perfect, but no huge disappointments either, so I call that a win.

I’m also just really happy that football is back, and that our team seems to be on the right track for a great season.

I'm moderately pleased

Both the interior OL and the entire defense got off to a slow start and that’s why we didn’t score closer to 50. That Wyoming QB is a baller and he fucked us up in the first quarter and kept our offense off the field.

I thought Ash was OK to good. He didn’t make any ugly mistakes and aside from the errant snap he “fumbled” no turnovers. Had he hit one of those deep balls I’d say he played very good.

Worried about the kicking game.

Also agree that the 82 yard TD was more of a fluke and not indicative of much more than poor tackling in the first game of the year. Had that not happened and we made both missed FG’s, we’d be looking at 43-10 and a lot of the eeyores in the fanbase would be somewhat more subdued this morning.

I especially loved one play

Where Ash dumped it off to DJ and he took it for a 1st down without breaking stride. At least showed that Ash’s touch on the short pass has improved along with DJ’s catching.

Cool bit

Ash had a few nice moments like that

Where he got flushed from the pocket, kep his eyes upfield and made an accurate throw over the middle for a conversion. Until I see a replay I don’t know whether deeper open reads were available, but any time you’ve got a QB who’s not a real running threat (he’s capably mobile, but doesn’t yet even approach Colt-caliber results running the ball) get flushed laterally and turn it into a first down, it’s A Good Thing.

I HAVE LHN!!!!!

Well, my son does. Just as good.
I listened on the radio through the first Texas TD. Arrived at son’s for dinner. Sat calmly through a very good salad and some nice chicken enchiladas. Then excused myself to “Catch up on the score.”
“Oh? What game?” says his wife.
“The Longhorns, of course,” say I.
“Oh. We have the Longhorn network,” says she innocently.
Dumbfounded silence for a beat. “WHAT???!!!” say I suavely.
So I got to watch the rest of the game (Wyoming was up 9-7 at that point).

—Ash’s targeting was a little off at times. He MUST learn to hit those deep throws with proper accuracy and timing. Those plays will be crucial against the better teams. I liked the ways we were getting ball around in the short passing game.
—The running game is about what we expected, but I would like to see more effectiveness inside consistently. Nice mixup and outside work. That’s encouraging. Two ballers at tailback. Nice.
—Passing game has miles to go before it sleeps, but it’s definitely better than last year. Not good enough yet to be a major factor against a good defense, though. Work needed.
—The defense was by turns sloppy and brilliant. Tackling, guys! I know the coaches told you about that.
—Not really a bad outing. Plenty to grow off of. Plenty to work on. If certain areas are not drastically better the next game, then we might have some worries, but it’s too soon.
—{vagina squeeze} Ohmygodwestvirginiaisgonnareamus!!! OK. A little Vagisil and I will be fine.

The offensive game plan...

… seemed to be Greg Davis’s wet dream. This did not inspire confidence. No, trust me, I get it, you have to settle in, game 1, take what they’re giving you, blah blah. Sure, makes sense. But at some point you have to dictate what you want to do. Ash seemed to be handcuffed until the second half, not allowed to target a receiver beyond 8 yards. Was this intentional?

Not worried about the defense at all. O-line still scares me a bit, and the kicking game needs to get sorted out. But it’s gonna be an interesting year.

A little perspective...

… the fellas over at Mountain West Connection, who are expected to know a thing or two about Wyoming, predicted that the Cowboys would go 11-1 and win the MWC (http://www.mwcconnection.com/2012/7/20/3173219/2012-mountain-west-football-predictions), including beating Boise State.

There may have been some flaws in execution, but this was a very respectable opponent. Let’s see if we can’t win by 84 next week, against a much less respected New Mexico.

by RicksHaberdasher on Sep 2, 2025 8:52 AM CDT reply actions

I don't know if I'd be signing up for a Boise St. upset

But that squad looked very capable and their QB has something.

I’ll be watching their lines with interest the next few weeks.

I’d bet Wyoming beats Marshall on a neutral field by a TD, and they aren’t remotely comparable to some of the 1-AA shitbirds that other programs beat up on this week.

So much for the MWC "experts"

I’d say fan responder C.Hondros has it more accurate.
1. Boise State (undefeated in conference, not undefeated season)
2. Nevada
3. Wyoming
4. Fresno
5. Air Force
6. SDSU
7. Hawaii
8. CSU
9. UNLV

Boise State barrrrrely lost to everyone’s pick to win the BigTen, Michigan State. Nevada beat Cal. That Wyoming team isn’t going to go undefeated in the MWC. Oh…… and being a “bowl bound team” coming from the MWC is something greater than a flea on an elephant’s ass.

--- All roads to the Big-XII Championship lead through OU/RRS. It's not just another game! We're all about championships here. ---
