David Boren's recent comments indicate that OU is unhappy and will attempt to leave the Big 12, if Boren's demands are not met. Boren's demands are: 1) expansion to 12 members, 2) a conference championship game, and 3) a conference TV network.
But even if all of Boren's demands were met, those changes would still not make the Big 12 competitive with other P-5 conferences. Boren is an intelligent man. Surely he knows that the Big 12 is incapable of meeting all of his demands, so why is he making them? Does OU have an invitation from another P-5 conference? Is Boren putting the cat on the roof?
What does Texas do if Oklahoma tries to contest the grant of rights agreement and move to another conference? The Oklahoma game is the single most important game on our schedule. Will we attempt to hold OU in the conference against their will, or will we attempt to negotiate an amicable separation that preserves the Texas-OU rivalry?
Boren is said to favor academics over athletics. Boren reportedly prefers the Big 10 over the SEC. Boren is also 74 years old. The next president of OU might attempt to move the Sooners to the SEC. Is this a good time to let OU go, provided they go anywhere but the SEC?
TCU and Baylor have made major gains in the last several years. Charlie Strong has Texas trending upwards again. Is the Big 12 conference better prepared now to survive without Oklahoma? Is it really necessary for every other member of the Big 12 to play Oklahoma, as long as Texas maintains its annual rivalry with OU?
