Bennie Wylie's OL/DL Workout

If you had the Longhorn Network, you would have already seen this. But you don't, so here is Bennie Wylie pushing tractors around, looking better than you do in a spandex shirt.

Maybe they'll dig through the archives and show some of Mad Dog's old Max Out Wednesday! workouts.

What's your max, bro?

A strength and conditioning coach who’s strong AND conditioned? Glory be.

Great find, Vash - if anyone out there has any of his other workouts - particularly the LB workouts - in either video or text form I’d love to get a look at them.

I thought that John Deere cart was going to come rolling by my office window.

From all reports, he’s a keeper.

I’m generally not a big fan of exercises done while lying on your back for football. That said, some amount of bench to build strength makes sense as long as it’s not overdone (the medicine ball push-ups are niiiiice). I really like that they emphasize hand/ elbow placement on the lifts, it may seem silly, but it’s really the difference between a holding call and a good block.

I am a big fan of explosive workouts i.e. snatch/clean, and the sled/car driving looks like a fun way to mix it up.

Overall, I’m pretty impressed with the limited amount I’ve seen Wylie. I could care less what he looks like, as long as he’s an effective teacher/coach.

I found that comment interesting.

What is this Longhorn Network of which you speak?

by Dude on Feb 6, 2026 12:30 PM CST reply actions

Texoz, I can’t imagine a college o-line coach teaching anything other than elbows in, thumbs up, so I don’t think that was a shot a the previous staff. More like they’re just using every opportunity to emphasize blocking fundamentals.

He ain’t Todd Wright, but he works his ass off, demands accountability from the kids - who love and respect him, and he has brought us forward 15 years in S&C knowledge and application.

There are still some gaps in our S&C program with respect to nutrition and we’re slow to incorporate the knowledge they’re discovering in sports like MMA, but moving from a D- to a B is a pretty strong improvement.

Agreed. People make a big deal out of how much more cut he is, but that’s not important for a coach. I wouldn’t expect Clyde Hart to be cut like a marquis diamond and do endless relays all day. Instead he’s ancient, developing a bit of a gut, and remains arguably one of the best athletic coaches in the world. I obviously love that Bennie takes it upon himself to set an example, but the criticism of Madden for his level of fitness in light of his job was unfounded.

I love the cleans as well. I played mostly DB and PR/KR (some slot and ST coverage), and our coaches kept me on hang cleans for the most part, but I have always thought cleans (ideally snatches), front-squats, and incline bench are three of the best weight room exercises for anyone eligible for the Lombardi Award. Watching that video makes me wish I could get my mitts on that squat/chest chain and harness machine, though!

Interesting note on the hand placement on the bench. I’m just 5’10", so I never took a big, wide grip anyway, but project that demonstrated placement to what I do, and I’d have my hands right on the inside edge of the grip. I usually just put my hands where I think my thumbs are just outside of the outermost part of my shoulders.

Body By Bennie looks like good stuff. We saw less than half a year of it, basically, when the 2011 season started. Provided it’s sound and effective, the overall impact on the field should get better and better each year until his first class of true freshmen are seniors. Can’t wait.

I am trainer and a former D1 strength coach and am a huge fan of Bennie. He is one of the best in the biz. I did some camps with him when he was at Tech and was very impressed.

Scipio, you are correct, there are many more progressive things I would love to see in our football S & C program. Coach Wright has an ideal philosophy in my opinion. But a lot of the time it is the football coaches that hold back the S & C coaches from breaking out of the typical molds. A lot of them are just total meatheads who see anything other than Olympic lifts as non suitable for a football player.

Anything is better than Coach Slapdick AKA Mad Dog

by silverspur1999 on Feb 6, 2026 1:26 PM CST reply actions

Scipio,

Regardless of the political implications, would you be in favor of Mack stealing or perhaps “buying” Wright?

There has been a shit ton of stuff written lately about how basketball power forwards make good football players, and certainly coaches love those skill sets, speed, power, agility, height. I wonder if coaches are a bit too enamored with basketball players.

Sports like MMA , wrestling, and boxing reveal character that you can’t see from team sport only athletes. I wouldn’t diminish the need for fast skilled players, but certainly at Texas we seem to have an abundance of basketball players and an shortage of MMA attributes—balance, leverage, toughness. If you quit in a fight, it’s pretty damn obvious, it’s much easier to quit in a football game, few people can tell when your left guard packs it in.

That’s probably why the MMA pretty much has to be at the cutting edge of the sport conditioning world, even though the funding for football is exponentially higher.

Do kids not wrestle in high school anymore?

Good points
Do kids not wrestle in high school anymore?

With the advance in popularity of MMA across the nation, you’re seeing more interest and participation in wrestling in high school. Especially seeing as how wrestling is the current superior field of study for most MMA fighters. The ability to wrestle at a high level means the ability to control your opponent throughout the match in ways that a boxer or muay thai specialist can only dream of.

I would be infinitely impressed with any S&C coach for a major football program in installing some Greco-Roman style wrestling and training for those who play on the line. The development of upper body strength, and the conditioning they (Wrestler/MMA fighters) go through is incredible, and it would pay dividends in the athleticism and overall brute strength of our linemen.

Scip: Was it you who recommended listening to Joe Rogan. When you wrote this:

“There are still some gaps in our S&C program with respect to nutrition and we’re slow to incorporate the knowledge they’re discovering in sports like MMA, but moving from a D- to a B is a pretty strong improvement.”

all I could think of was Joe Rogan talking about nutrition.

I’d have to think Bennie and Todd Wright talk, and if Wright’s doing some things that Bennie can incorporate for the football conditioning program, I’m betting you’ll see ‘em soon. It’s also pretty likely Bennie’s program is a work-in-progress, much like Harsin hasn’t put in his whole offense yet. Like Scip said, getting our program up from an F to a high B in about a year is a major step in the right direction.

Meh…Ive met Madden. He was a very large man, with a pretty quick mind to boot. He was built completely different than Bennie. I do not think his “workout” was the issue. I think his attitude was the issue.

Instead of work hard, be humble…it was more like we’ve worked hard, now it’s time to reap.

Also, I don’t doubt he knew how to teach. However, the material he was teaching (or the shenanigans that went with it) was questionable.

Just so that we don’t misconstrue his body type correlating with his effectiveness as a coach.
