2013 SG Keith Frazier Took an Unofficial Visit to Texas

Per Hookem247 ($), 2013 shooting guard Keith Frazier (Dallas Kimball) took an unofficial visit to Texas this past weekend. That's huge news for the Longhorns, who have been barely keeping pace in Frazier's recruitment. Frazier, Julius Randle (Plano PCA), and Matt Jones (DeSoto, committed to Duke) are the "Big 3" Dallas area five-star prospects in the class of 2013. According to Gerry Hamilton, Frazier was intrigued by J'Covan Brown's role in the offense, although I personally see him more in a Sheldon McClellan role.

Another name to keep an eye on in the class of 2013 is Jordan Bell, a forward from Long Beach Poly. Bell is a mid-tier four star prospect that was reportedly recently offered by the Longhorns. Alex Kline is also reporting that Texas may be interested in sharpshooter Jon Severe, a little-known 2013 shooting guard from Christ the King in Brooklyn. Rick Barnes may not be going to Canada anymore, but he's truly recruiting coast to coast.

Regarding Cameron Ridley, the 2012 center from Fort Bend Bush that remains committed to but has not signed with the Longhorns, there have been conflicting reports. Inside Texas' Blake Monroe reported that there has been a "breakthrough" with Ridley's recruitment, clearing his path to sign with Texas in April, while Hookem247's Gerry Hamilton says there's been no change from previous reports. Guess we'll find out in April.

Be excellent to each other.

Given the big recruiting classes last year and this coming year.....

How many guys can we truly expect to get in 2013? Seems like 2 will probably be the maximum and that may be pushing it.

by LongandHorny on Feb 14, 2026 9:52 AM CST reply actions

well- 5 this year, plus 4 next year make 9

subtract Myck, who will be gone, and Ridley (who even if he shows will likely be a 1 and done guy), who’s probably gone, and that’s only 7 scholarship guys. That leaves up to 6 guys that could be signed, right? Not saying we’d take all those spots, b/c that could theoretically mean that we have no spots for 2014. Still I’d expect 2013 to be bigger than a 2 man class and for us still to be playing with extra scholarships (though hopefully not the 5 empty scholies we have this year.

Actually I believe we got 6 this year and 5 next year

This year:
Kabongo
Holmes
Bond
Gibbs
Lewis
Mcllelan

Next year:
Ridley
Felix
Ibeh
Lammert
Papapetrou

Also we are still in the running for 5* recruit Pollard. Overall very little room available for 2013 and 2014 unless some people transfer. Not sure its a given that both Myck and Ridley will be gone.

I saw the 6 freshmen thing tonight and forgot about Gibbs

Still, Kabongo and Ridley will not be playing in the 2013 class. That makes 9. Still 13 ships, right? Figure probably some other attrition somewhere. I bet we have 4 ships to use in 2013 class.

Hate to be a downer...

But Gerry H has been pretty nails on the Ridley situation. So I am inclined to trust his word on this one. I see this one going down to the minute his signature is on the paper.

JC

What do you think the chances are of Texas signing any of the Big 3?

by Darth Bevo on Feb 14, 2026 10:12 AM CST reply actions

oops

I meant the remaining 2 of the Big 3.

by Darth Bevo on Feb 14, 2026 10:32 AM CST up reply actions

Right now

Randle is considered a Duke/UNC lean. Frazier really likes Arizona. The Harrison twins, from Travis in greater Houston, likely have Kentucky and Maryland as favorites.

Because of the big ‘11 and ’12 classes pointed out by LongandHorny above, the 2013 class is really one where Texas needs 1 or 2 home run recruits to make a deep tourney run. If all goes to plan, Kabongo, J’Covan and Ridley would be gone, but the ‘11 class would be upperclassmen and key players from the ’12 class like Ibeh and Felix would be ready to step in as well. What the ’13 team really needs is the one alpha superstar like Randle, otherwise they’ll more likely end up looking like the Houston Rockets—good team, but nowhere great to go.

Thanks

It’s too bad the Texas basketball team can’t consistently get the top in-state talent the way the football team does. But I can’t really blame the elite recruits for wanting to go to a basketball-first kind of school like Duke, UNC and Kentucky.

we do get the top in state talent consistently

About 25 percent of it anyway. That’s about as good as it gets.

Duke, UNC, and UK

Are not the primary problems with in-state recruiting. That is a newer shift. The main problem is universities like OSU and Baylor, as Scipio alluded to…

Not sure I agree, Blake

After doing this study, it appears like the local Big 12 powers have long had a foothold in Texas (OSU with Eaton, A&M; with Joesph Jones, for example). Texas HS recruiting shifted from nationally in the early ’00s (Arizona, most notably) to more regional in the late ’00s as the talent level dwindled.

As the talent has picked back up, we’ve seen the re-emergence of Texas as a national recruiting base. Duke, UNC and Kentucky are three of the bluest bloods you can get, and seeing them take a keen interest in Texas is very disconcerting. Couple that with Texas’ recent shift to national recruiting (Findlay Prep / Canada, most notably), and I’m very concerned about Texas’ ability to pull elite Lone Star players in the near future.

If Texas doesn’t land Ridley, they’ll miss on all the elite ‘12 prospects. They don’t look good for ‘13. That’s bad news with the high level of talent in-state.

Good news.

Barnes will have to be pretty resourceful to recruit untainted kids.

Per Hookem

Justin Jackson and Justise Winslow visited a couple weeks ago for the Tech game. Both are 5* prospects in the 2014 class from the Houston area. Emmanuel Mudiay, a 5* from Dallas area, and Kabongo’s cousin, is also in that class.

Texas was the first school to extend Winslow a scholarship offer, so that’s good news.

All three are absolutely ridiculous talents

Jackson is your typical silky-smooth swing man. Winslow is a Wes Johnson/Kris Joseph type with better handles and creative ability. Mudiay is a freaky cross between Kabongo and Russell Westbrook. Also like PG Alex Robinson, who has a very similar game to UW’s Isaiah Thomas, but isn’t that short.

Two reports talked to the Harrison twins' dad

He says Aaron and Andrew Harrison likely down to Maryland, Kentucky, Villanova or Baylor.

Not surprising that Texas is officially out (they were never really in to begin with), but it still sucks that they’re not on the finalist list.

News never stops

Texas has offered 2013 guard Kendrick Nunn out of Chicago, a former Texas A&M; commit. Nunn is an undersized combo guard who plays on the same team as Jabari Parker, a top 3 recruit in the 2013 class. Also, with Illinois and Bruce Weber’s future in flux, Chicago is an open playground for recruiters.

Winston Shepard, a 2012 forward, just committed to San Diego State. Some people thought Texas would take more of a run at Shepard, who is the son of Texas Ex Winn Shepard and plays for Findlay Prep. Texas never showed much interest, however. Shepard is a really good defender but tends to look passive on offense. It’ll be interesting to track his career against Ioannis Papapetrou, who filled the spot Shepard presumably may have had.

Unless Nunn guarantees a shot at Parker, which it doesn't

I don’t see it.

Agree

The Nunn offer looks like one of those McGary/Muhammad-type “throw it out there but don’t follow up” offers that has puzzled me in this year’s class.

Great info.

Thanks for all this news, JC. Love staying informed on the possible future of the program.

Another California offer

2013 PF Marcus Lee from Deer Valley (Antioch, CA). Just a 3* but starting to garner lots of interest from Pac 12 programs.

2014 SF Justise Winslow

Was in attendance for the Baylor game. Had attended the Texas Tech game a couple weekends ago. Not sure how he got back to Houston for school on Tuesday, but glad to see he made it.

Kentucky looks to be a serious player for Winslow (as well as fellow Texan Emmanuel Mudiay). He’s also taking unofficials to Arizona and North Carolina. It’s gonna be a national recruitment for him, Mudiay, and Justin Jackson.
