The Texas Longhorns' 2012 Football Schedule Is Out

2012 opponents: Fear The ThighMaster

Sept. 1 - WYOMING
Sept. 8 - NEW MEXICO
Sept. 15 - at Mississippi
Sept. 29 - at Oklahoma State
Oct. 6 - WEST VIRGINIA
Oct. 13 - vs. Oklahoma (Dallas)
Oct. 20 - BAYLOR
Oct. 27 - at Kansas
Nov. 3 - at Texas Tech
Nov. 10 - IOWA STATE
Nov. 24 - TCU
Dec. 1 - at Kansas State

Star-divide

Some quick thoughts:

  • For Longhorn season ticket holders, the additions of TCU and West Virginia saved what would have been a garbage home slate
  • The season likely hinges on a four game stretch from Sept 29th-Oct 20: @ OSU, West Virginia, OU, Baylor. That run is preceded by a bye week and Manny Diaz will need every minute of it
  • Texas-OU moving from the first weekend in October is sacrilege (no, it's not, I'm an idiot), but I like having five games under our belt
  • @ Tech Nov 3rd and @ KSU December 1 are clear trap games
  • The Sooners face road games @ WVU, @ TCU, @ KSU, @ Tech, @ ISU. Expect one of our new conference mates to inflict a loss on the Sooners
  • The 2012 conference champion won't go unblemished - a three way tie between 2 loss teams isn't out of the question
  • I still think this Texas team can finish the season with double digit wins

Hey now!
The season likely hinges on a four game stretch from Sept 29th-Oct 20

Don’t forget that tough road trip to Lawrence to square off against Chaz and the Jayhawks.

Sorry, I couldn't resist getting to answer 3.141592 ... in a poll.

Other than the attraction of infinite and irrational numbers, double digits sounds do-able.

So ACL Festival and TX/OU are on the same weekend?

Good. I have a great excuse not to buy ACL tickets this year.

by A-Tex Devil on Feb 14, 2026 11:18 AM CST reply actions

Rough stretch.

From Okie Lite to Baylor that’s killer. If we can come out 2-2 I won’t be upset. 3-1 and we’ve got ourselves a real nice team in the works. Defense will have to be nails once again. I think we beat Okie Lite and Baylor. New QB’s against this defense will be fun early in the year. Really don’t know much about WVU other than dark horse heisman talk about their QB…and the inimitable Holgerson.

by Burnt Orange Wookiee on Feb 14, 2026 11:21 AM CST reply actions

Why include Baylor?
From Okie Lite to Baylor that’s killer.

I just don’t see them even being a bowl team this year without RGIII.

by Horncasting on Feb 14, 2026 11:26 AM CST up reply actions

See roster.

Briles hasn’t been asleep at the wheel. They have a reportedly decent QB waiting in the wings, Seastrunk, and Ganaway still. They will be significantly easier, but we didn’t exactly look good against them so let’s wait and see before declaring their return to suckitude. I’m saying we win, but they aint gonna become Kansas.

by Burnt Orange Wookiee on Feb 14, 2026 11:29 AM CST up reply actions

Florence is solid.

But the drop off from immortal to solid is steep.

Ganaway is gone. Irrelevant anyway - their backs were a creation of RGIII.

by Scipio Tex on Feb 14, 2026 11:34 AM CST up reply actions

They beat us the last two years

Maybe we’re better. Maybe (probably) they’re not as good. Still a tough game at the end of a four-game minefield. Remember Tech ’08 following OU-Mizzou-OSU.

by edsp on Feb 14, 2026 12:38 PM CST up reply actions

That's my point

If you look back on the plays they beat us with the last two years, a very high percentage involve Gideon whiffing on Kendall Wright in the open field resulting in a long TD.

No more Wright, no more Gideon. Clean slate.

by CMDR on Feb 14, 2026 12:50 PM CST up reply actions

Not the same situation as in 08

That was a really good TT team. We would have had trouble against them regardlesss of their slotting on the schedule

Seastrunk an upgrade anyhow?

I stand corrected on Ganaway. I’d still include Baylor on the tough stretch for now, but I’ll defer to the analysts.

by Burnt Orange Wookiee on Feb 14, 2026 12:44 PM CST up reply actions

Ganaway is a legit player

He’s a bigger loss for t hem than a lot of people will expect. Lot of diversity when you have a power back that can rip off 80 yarders.

Agreed

Baylor’s pass protection is going to look pretty different when it’s Florence back there. A lot of the deep bombs they punished teams with are going to disappear.

by Nickel Rover on Feb 14, 2026 4:19 PM CST up reply actions

Eh, even with RGIII they really only managed one good year

With good for them being defined as 3 losses and a win in the Alamo Bowl. I see a regression to their mean, and closer to Kansas than Texas.

by Horncasting on Feb 14, 2026 1:38 PM CST up reply actions

It is going to be interesting

to see how the predictions for each team change as reports from spring practices and spring games start filtering out from all the teams.

by Sasha is a Longhorn Dog on Feb 14, 2026 11:23 AM CST reply actions

I actually think the schedule sets up pretty nicely

All OOC games should be wins, with the toughest one being the last.

I’d much rather start conference play with the seemingly rebuilding Cowboys with a new QB than KSU who returns everyone including Klein.

WVU being new hopefully keeps us from looking ahead to OU.

We get extra time to prepare for TCU and scheduling KSU at the end of the season increases the odds that Snyder will have croaked by then.

Double digit wins is definitely do-able this year.

by Horncasting on Feb 14, 2026 11:24 AM CST reply actions

I like this schedule as well.

The season starts off nicely. A couple easy home games to get everyone back in the swing of things. Follow that up with a medium difficulty road game. Should be a win, no doubt, but let the frosh adjust to a respectable road environment. Then a bye week to prepare for the meat of our schedule. A rebuilding OSU early in the year helps. Getting WVU at home is preferable. And both of those games should get our troops a little seasoning (especially trying to stop Holgo’s offense) to be prepared for the RRS. I think Baylor takes a pretty large step back this year after losing Kendall Wright and RGIII. The bye week right before probably one of our tougher games, the Thanksgiving bout with TCU, is nice also. And K-State as our last game of the year. Given our struggles against that team, that just seems fitting to me for some reason.

Will we win ‘em all? Highly improbable. But I think if spring practice goes as well as we all anticipate (meaning the run game stays a little healthier this year, Ash takes a step forward, Shipley gets himself healthy, the O-line gets another offseason with Wylie and Searels, and Manny just continues his witchcraft) this team could win 10, with 11 not being impossible. Neither is another 7-5 or 8-4 year impossible though. Either way, I’m excited for it, and why not be optimistic this time of year?

defenses

If you believe that our defense will be one of the best in the nation and our offense will be above average, as I do, I think it will take teams with very good defenses to beat us. I.e. our defense will be good enough to limit good offenses to well below their normal production; can our offense score enough? I think we will against average defenses. I haven’t kept up with what players left etc — who are the toughest defenses we face? OU? OSU? TCU?

The 2012 conference champion won’t go unblemished - a three way tie between 2 loss teams isn’t out of the question

Ha Ha Ha Ha!

by Sailor Ripley on Feb 14, 2026 11:30 AM CST reply actions

I love having two bye weeks.

When playing 12 games it can make a huge difference in helping the team get healthy, not to mention adding some wrinkles during the season. The preliminary schedule I saw a couple of weeks ago had TCU as the last game on Thanksgiving with only one bye week and no game on Dec. 1 when other conferences are playing championship games. I didn’t like that arrangement and I’m glad to see it didn’t happen.

One caveat though is that the weather in Manhattan Kansas on Dec. 1 could be a real crapshoot. If we have the power style offense that we’re supposed to though that should help a lot.

No game on Turkey Day?

Why is the TCU game on 11/24 (Sat.) instead of 11/22 (Thanksgiving)? Is that set in stone, or are they just waiting for ESPN to bless the match and move it to Thursday?

Does this count the bowl?

I voted 11, as in 10 regular season wins, plus a bowl win.

by CMDR on Feb 14, 2026 12:09 PM CST reply actions

then I'll stand by 11

we won 8 last year, to think the improved defense, plus improved running game, plus Ash with an actual off-season can’t add up to 3 additional wins is silly.

by CMDR on Feb 14, 2026 12:33 PM CST up reply actions

Agree. I have 11 as well.

Hell, I’m not convinced we don’t win 10 in 2011 with 2/3 of our RB’s healthy. Next year we likely won’t have a true fresham starting at QB, LT, RB(s) or WR. Just about everyone returns on an OL that looked better in the second half of the year, and the one loss on the OL may very well be replaced by a Juco that is a net positive in terms of the entire OL.

by Horncasting on Feb 14, 2026 1:45 PM CST up reply actions

I'm in at 11.

I’ll add that there’s an expected bump in production from the first year with a new offensive or defensive coordinator to the second year—and we’re going into the second year for BOTH. Starters and reserves with more than a clue r.e. what they’re supposed to be doing out there should be good for a win or two.

by Stiendam Hall on Feb 14, 2026 8:41 PM CST up reply actions

Scip--Good thoughts. I give us 10 wins

Just don’t know if it’s 10 before Dec. 10, or 10 total.

My read of the schedule has OU hosting KSU. You’ve got Sooners with 5 roadies vs. 3 home games in Big 12.

by edsp on Feb 14, 2026 12:40 PM CST reply actions

I wish I could view KSU as a trap game

With effectively another full season under his belt, Ash (and a soul crushing defense) will hopefully have things moving along well enough to take care of the Purple Wizard’s army, but you know…it’s K-state and they scare the shit out of me. Otherwise, I think the drag rats will really enjoy a good couch fire come Oct. 6.

Interesting Scheduling Tidbit

Replace aggie and Mizzou with WVU and TCU and our strength of schedule last season goes up from #18 to #4.

I have no idea what that’s relevant to, but I thought it was interesting.

To err is human...but humans have such low standards.

The Land Thieves host Kansas State very early (Sept 22)

Go ahead and write that down as a win for Big Game Boob. Blech.

If UT loses to either WVU or TCU, I’ll be surprised. WVU crushed Clemson in some bowl game no one watched, but WVU wasn’t nearly that good against the rest of their pathetic conference. TCU will be good, but UT at home should be better.

I really like having the Cats host UT in early December. You just know the Wizard managed to pull some strings to get that scheduled -

Why?

UT is the younger, less experienced team with the question mark at QB. I would think that KSU would have preferred to get us early.

by Horncasting on Feb 14, 2026 2:39 PM CST up reply actions

Two different lines of thought

One, being that it is late in the season and due to our style of offensive play, that we are more likely to have integral injuries to our depth chart.

Two, that it is late in the season is most likely the first cold weather game for us to play in

I wonder

If the offense, as green as we expect many of the players to be, doesn’t hit a wall some time around the ISU game. Not particularly worried about the defense on that issue.

The thing about the weather is that UT's offense will be better suited for it this year.

Not that it still isn’t KSU’s favor. I remember one of the last couple of trips to Nebraska, our guys looking like they didn’t want to leave the lockerroom.

by Horncasting on Feb 14, 2026 4:04 PM CST up reply actions

I guess I'm the only one who isn't scared about...

OSU and Baylor? I really don’t see what everyone is worried about. From where I’m standing the only truly tough games I see are WVU and KSU, with close games at TCU and OU.

TCU should be stout… OU will only be a threat if they can find someone else to step-up and provide another credible receiver threat alongside Stills… KSU in Manhatten, in December will be tough sledding… And WVU has some speed in their defense and a genius running their offense.

OSU has managed to be good for several years now, and with several QB's

I think this is the 3rd or 4th QB/RB/WR turnover where most people have proclaimed them to return to being the afterthough they were 10 years ago. Gundy has been doing a very good job and I can see them staying in the top half of the conference and ranked in the top 20 for the foreseeable future.

Baylor on the other hand…..

by Horncasting on Feb 14, 2026 2:44 PM CST up reply actions

Agree...

OSU will be tougher than many are saying. I think Baylor will take a step back, but will be very tough as well. And while I think Ash will be very solid next season, people here are acting like we don’t have questions at QB as well. That seems like a hearty assumption to me.

by Big(g) Ern on Feb 14, 2026 2:47 PM CST up reply actions

I see ehwere you are coming from, and I think you make a valid point… I just disagree. I do think that OSU will have the 2nd or 3rd best defense in the conf. next season.

OU Is Very Much More Than a Threat.
OU will only be a threat if…

Sooner is pretty much always a threat when they have a good returning QB and a stable of WR’s. Broyles is a big loss, but they add Metoyer and return others. Whaley and some RB’s will do their usual non-contribution. Would like someone to chime in on how good their defense will be, but that comment struck me as a bit mystifying since OU has had the upper hand of late, and isn’t seeing a lot of roster change from last year’s team that dominated us. I think we’ll be better, and have a very good chance at winning, but unless we look like world beaters out of the gate they are the favorite I’d think.

Defense

I remember one of the BON or BC authors writing about how well a bunch of OU’s younger defensive players did against us this year. Just basing on that, I’d expect their defense to be pretty tough like always.

And I can’t understand marginalizing Jones. He’s had bad moments, but he’s a QB that will be drafted next year.

by Horncasting on Feb 14, 2026 2:56 PM CST up reply actions

They did replace their DC

Haven’t seen anyone really mention that, and maybe it’s because the consensus is that Mike Stoops will be an upgrade over Venables eventually. Or that it’s just a wash. Or maybe because Bob Stoops is the guy really running the defensive show. I still think turnover at DC is fairly significant though.

Mike vs. Venables

Not sure what impact that will have on the OU defense but their roster on that side of the ball is pretty good. Nelson-Wort-Jefferson is a nasty LB corp and will be better than what they had there last year. You expect them to be better at safety, they return everyone in their DT rotation, and King and Washington saw a lot of productive snaps at DE last year and played well.

They won’t match us defensively but they’ll be plenty good. If Stoops squeezes more out of their secondary they could be really good.

by Nickel Rover on Feb 14, 2026 4:23 PM CST up reply actions

Unfortunately

I agree as well. Landry will cost them a game or two, but he is still a senior who has also proven that he can win. They will be good. I expect this to be a close game this year, but would go into it expecting them to be favored.

Normally

I would agree with you… This season I’m not so sure. To use a Scipio-ism, I really think that Broyles was the straw that stirs the OU offensive drink. That… and I’m not that impressed with Jones or Heupel

Columbus Day

I always thought the game was traditionally on the Saturday before Columbus Day, which is always the second Monday in October. Gave everyone an additional day to recover/travel. Now that Columbus Day is going the way of cigar-store Indians and Confederate Heroes Day, there is no advantage to maintaining the tie.
