2013 WR Recruit Jake Oliver Is A Texas Longhorn
Nice combination of dirty work and skill. This verbal from the #1 WR prospect on Wyatt's board gives Texas its 2nd 2013 commitment. Welcome, Jake.

Great get, aggy legacy etc etc
This is a great #2 to the class. The days of Doyle and Moss commitments at JD 1 seem to be long gone…

Daddy likey
That’s a great get and momentum-builder for the class.
You always have to keep in mind the level of competition when you’re watching HS film, but irrespective of the Chets, Treys, Taylors and Coles that he’s lining up against he shows some outstanding body control when going up for the ball and a good amount of double-move niftiness for a 6’4" dude. Coach Wyatt is gonna love him some of that blocking tenacity to boot - if nothing else, maybe showing some of his film to Mike Davis will shame Davis into exerting some effort in that area.

His double move at 47 seconds
looks a lot like this one…..

Hah!
Wasn’t expecting to see a dozen cornerback pancakes in that film. Gotta like that.

Welcome Jake!
Agree with those talking about his blocking. He goes after opposing DB’s with a tenacity that is normally seen in ill-tempered 300lb offensive lineman. You can’t teach that. And that double move at :47 is pretty salty.
Is it just me or is he talking shit to the DB on the TD at the 2:26 mark?

So we are putting together a recruiting class of exclusively Jakes... Interesting
Gone are the lazy days of only recruiting kids named Malco(l)m Brown. Or there was the C. Brown duo. Heck throw in Terrell Brown and we could field about half an NFL roster of only Longhorns with the last name Brown. Or maybe gone are the days of only recruiting kids with colors for last names. I’m not sure!
But anywho, gone are those days. Bring on the Jakes this year! Who is the next Jake on our big board?

Technically,
he does have “Olive” in his last name and that can be considered a color. Goes well with the Ash-Gray and Brown backfield.

BON has a great interview of his Father up...says why he chose UT
Outstanding commitment and smart family. Education, family atmosphere, great recruiting classes and the aggies screwing over Sherman sent him our way at full speed. I like it…

This kid has a serious mean streak
As the block at 4:05 shows. His liablility appears to be his speed - 4.65 is probaly an optimistic time.

aggy justify
Man, read Texags about this one.
Range:
“He sucks ’cause he plays private school ball and white. No loss. But fuck him for dissing us as a legacy.”
to
“We only lost him because his dad did not like the way we fired Sherman, and his relative could not get in to aggy.”
But, dear agroid, Dallas Jesuit (along with Houston Strake) plays in a 5A district with studs. Those cornerbacks Jake is mauling are not Fort Worth Country Day or Hyde Park pussies who will pledge Fiji at SMU or Baylor next year.
AND, had this commitment gone to College Station, he would be the second coming of Tannihill (pre move-to-mediocre-QB days).

Favorite HS WR tape ever
I love that our first 2 signees are guys who take to the physical nature of the sport and are adept in physically dominating opponents.

My God, this kid wants to hurt somebody. I think he likes blocking better than receiving.

No clue where Raulerson ends up yet, but
Raulerson as a mauling, edge-setting TE + Oliver blocking with that kind of authority = house calls aplenty on Outside Zone.

The Two Jakes
are some nasty boys! I don’t remember a single WR in the Mack Brown era with that kind of nasty streak and ball skills to go with it.
by boorad on Feb 15, 2026 5:08 PM CST up reply actions
I predict
an increase in shots of blocking in WR tape after this. There are probably lots of other top WR recruits who either do this or are capable of doing this. Especially with the prevalence of the running game at many HS programs.
by Nickel Rover on Feb 15, 2026 5:19 PM CST up reply actions
I don't know Nickel
This kid was not happy just blocking - he was trying to drive them INTO the ground!
The one shot where he blew the DB back behing the DB’s own bench was awesome!

The mentality is great
but many HS DB’s range from 140-170 pounds. Many a college bound WR is capable of this. I think the mentality says a lot, I’m just saying that the fact that other kids don’t have this on their highlight tapes is not an indication that he’s elite in his blocking skills.
by Nickel Rover on Feb 15, 2026 5:39 PM CST up reply actions
I'm sure that's true
But I doubt it was with Shipley or Davis. At least from all indications on the Longhorn squad.
My experience with WR’s, is blocking was almost an insulting task for them - they were receivers, by God! :-)

What he lacks in speed...
He seems to. Make up for in vision and angles. I the video, there were a few times I thought he wouldn’t make it to the end zone on a screen or a run after the catch. I definitely thought the DB would catch up to him. But the DBs didn’t. He seems to know how to take the right angle to make it to the end zone. I’ll take that in a guy with sure hands, a knack for blocking, and good route running.

I wish more wideout tape would highlight blocking
My take besides the obvious which had already been covered…
Jake has a great ability to adjust his speed faster or slower in order to let the ball fall to him, and not just that, he makes it so that he and only he has a chance to make the chance by blocking out the DBs with his frame, very nice and often underrated skill.
Jake also is great at the short pass and screens which will give Ash a chance at hitting him or Shipley…
And finally I think Jake has a good sense of the field, especially in the back of the end zone, quite a few plays on his tape show him jumping short and reaching up to grab the ball knowing exactly where his feet needed to land to make the play, and while he wasn’t perfect (saw three out of bounds incompletions) it is a great starting point that can be crafted to makes him a solid receiver that makes sure he gets the 1st down with his route and then tries for the extra yardage AFTER the catch (something we’ve been missing lately)

Remember Larry Fitzgerald his last year of college?
He was a true soph (did a prep year to qualify), and he had all that body control, great ball skills, etc. He moved a lot like Oliver, except obviously there’s the difference 3-4yrs. of age can make as well. He also had questions about whether he had the pure speed and acceleration to get that separation, but sometimes experience, moves, some good S&C, and stridework can make all the difference. I will say that those Oliver highlights show a lot more blocking than any Fitzgerald highlights I could find, although there’s also a little body-catching, which he’ll need to avoid.
Another comparison might be Ron Gardner. Keep in mind I’m comparing Oliver to the college version of these guys, not their divergent NFL careers.
