NCAA Selection Sunday: Open Thread
A wild Sunday of college basketball has already resulted in Kentucky losing the SEC Championship Game to Vanderbilt, North Carolina losing the ACC Championship Game to Florida State, and St. Bonaventure sneaking into the NCAA Tournament with a upset of Xavier in the Atlantic 10 Championship Game. As I type this, Ohio St. and Michigan St. are going down to the wire in the Big 10 Championship Game.
As for the Texas Longhorns, they appear to be in the field of 68, either as one of the "Last Four In" or a straight seed that will start play on Thursday/Friday. Fingers crossed for a favorable match-up and a chance to play on.

The Fighting Izzos are taking down Ohio State
and anytime any Ohio State is taken down by a team from Michigan it is a good thing.
Makes for a little more drama in filling out all four #1 seeds.

Current bracketology
Has us as a 11 seed playing Memphis in Columbus.
by Scipio Tex on Mar 11, 2026 4:38 PM CDT reply actions
Why is Missouri not be discussed more seriously as a 1 seed?
by Scipio Tex on Mar 11, 2026 4:40 PM CDT reply actions
Seems like Mizzou fell out of favor
with their fourth conference loss . . . since then, no buzz at all.
However, they are playing like a No. 1 seed.
by Cirque Du Salado on Mar 11, 2026 4:44 PM CDT up reply actions
Yep.
And they really tried to play excellent out of conference opponents - some of them just didn’t pan out. They hammered Villanova, Notre Dame and Cal convincingly. I’m absolutely convinced that Mizzou would have won the Big East.
by Scipio Tex on Mar 11, 2026 4:47 PM CDT up reply actions
Agree . . . I'm on the Tigers bandwagon
I love the way they play offense.

Mizzou
Rumored to be 2 seed in STL. If that’s the case I don’t think they mind not being a 1.

A huge coup
That’s like pulling a #1. A UNC-Mizzou matchup would be great fun.
by Scipio Tex on Mar 11, 2026 4:56 PM CDT up reply actions
A Kentucky-Mizzou final in St. Louis is so perfect
that it probably won’t happen . .. Seems like those ‘perfect matchup’ never happen.

Would love to see Mizzou-Cuse
Am convinced they’d kick the shit out of that zone.

Misery pretty much trashing the Big 12 and Neinas on their post game celebration thread.

CBS has us playing San Diego State in Greensboro
and a win earns a neutrally officiated game against Duke.

I love Selection Sunday
I’m just fired up that we’re a part of it. However briefly.
by Scipio Tex on Mar 11, 2026 4:51 PM CDT reply actions
My favorite part is . . .
Going from 64 teams at noon Thursday to 16 teams by 6 p.m. Sunday . . . 48 seasons end in 78 hours.
by Cirque Du Salado on Mar 11, 2026 4:54 PM CDT up reply actions
I am assuming that both Kansas and Missouri
are #2 seeds
by srr50 on Mar 11, 2026 5:04 PM CDT reply actions
If Mizzou goes to Midwest, Tigers will give Heels problems
I don’t think UNC does not defend the perimeter particularly well
by Cirque Du Salado on Mar 11, 2026 5:06 PM CDT reply actions
It will be a highly entertaining scoring fest.
Played in the 80s and 90s.

I like ISU's draw against UCONN for them.
Not so much Kentucky.

Don't know when I've seen a team as excited as Memphis

Michigan State sent to Columbus Ohio?
That’s like sending Texas to Fayetteville

FSU earned that 3 in the conf tourney
Were a 5 one week ago.

About as good as we could have hoped for
getting in as an #11 seed without a play-in game.
by srr50 on Mar 11, 2026 5:31 PM CDT reply actions
3/4 of the way through the brackets and Iona
so far is the only pick that even comes close to a WTF? choice.

Any thoughts on how we match up against Cincy?
Hopefully they are not the heady veteran team we fear or the big tall front court like Baylor.
by ShameAndFailure on Mar 11, 2026 5:35 PM CDT reply actions
Guard oriented.
With one large, very physical big man. They’re more athletic than we are, but not great shooters. Expect an ugly game.
by Scipio Tex on Mar 11, 2026 5:47 PM CDT up reply actions
Ugly?
If you equate low-scoring with “ugly,” then very much so. .. . Bearcats played 34 games . . in 7 games, the winner scored in the 50s . . .in 7 others, the winning team scored in the 60s . . . The Big East final against Louisville was 50-44.
by Cirque Du Salado on Mar 11, 2026 5:59 PM CDT up reply actions
I equate ugly with ugly.
Missed shots. Turnovers. Choppy action. Lots of fouls.
by Scipio Tex on Mar 11, 2026 6:02 PM CDT up reply actions
How bad is the Pac 12?
Their second team in will be in a play-in game.

Think Colorado would've won the Big XII if they'd stayed?
Me neither.
by Cirque Du Salado on Mar 11, 2026 6:02 PM CDT up reply actions
Last year when Arizona bounced us....
…. by all of one piont, the Longhorn fan base was filled with those calling for R.Barnes to be replaced with Sean Miller, Ben Howland or Jay Wright.
Where are they now? NOT in the NCAA Tournament!
Meanwhile, Rick Barnes will be coaching in his 17th consecutive NCAA Tournament.
--- All roads to the Big-XII Championship lead through OU/RRS. It's not just another game! We're all about championships here. ---

I guess calling out your team can work.

Wide open tournament
Advancing a bunch of 1s blindly to your Final 4 will be a losing strategy this year.
by Scipio Tex on Mar 11, 2026 5:58 PM CDT reply actions
The least likely 1 or 2 to make the final 4 is . . .
Duke . . . Besides the Rivers’ miracle, they didn’t impress me much this year.

Missouri's non-conference schedule was ranked #294
and it nearly cost them even a #2 seed.
by srr50 on Mar 11, 2026 5:59 PM CDT reply actions
They're 9-1 against Top 25 teams
And they are 1st or 2nd 2 seed. They’re paired with Michigan St (the lowest #1) for a reason.
by Scipio Tex on Mar 11, 2026 6:04 PM CDT up reply actions
I think the selection committee dude mispoke. Mizzou appears to be the highest 2 seed and Duke the lowest.
by nordberg on Mar 11, 2026 6:13 PM CDT up reply actions
Duke got the Greensboro, NC draw, less than 1 hour away from campus
But they play on the same day there as UNC. They will have more fans cheering against them than for them.
by Sleepy on Mar 11, 2026 6:28 PM CDT up reply actions
The committee chairman said Missouri was the #8 overall seed
and when it was brought up that they are in the bracket with the #4 seed at the top he said travel was a consideration, which was a WTF? moment for me.
by srr50 on Mar 11, 2026 6:13 PM CDT reply actions
Yeah, that's committee babble.
It’s pretty clear who the top 2 seed is. Michigan State was a last minute addition and UK, Cuse and UNC were already written in stone before the semi-finals of their conference tourneys.

Cinncinnati
What are the odds they could be in the Big 12 in the next couple of years?

So the Big 12 DID put 6 teams in the tournament?
Pretty good for a football conference. How many teams did the Big East or the SEC put in the tournament?

Big East got 10 teams in
Big 10 also got six teams in the tournament and the SEC got 4
Just call me Mr. google.
