Texas Longhorns Men's Basketball Non-Conference Schedule Released

The 2012-13 Texas Longhorns Men's Basketball non-conference schedule was released by the Athletics Department today. There are no major surprises, as news has trickled out over the past few weeks announcing the marquee opponents. It's still nice to see it on paper, though.

From December 4 to December 22, the Longhorns will face an absolutely brutal 3 week stretch, playing Georgetown, UCLA, North Carolina, and Michigan State (along with a sandwiched Texas State game). Texas will also travel to Hawaii to take part in the Maui Invitational, with opponents announced at a later date.

Star-divide

At first glance, this year's non-conference schedule is much more aggressive than last year's, which head coach Rick Barnes kept purposefully easy to ease his young team into the season. With higher expectations this year, the Longhorns are going hard. Beyond the four power programs above, Fresno State could be a feisty team under former Longhorns assistant coach Rodney Terry, and Texas could also face a tough draw in Maui.

Full schedule is after the jump.

11/9: vs. Fresno State

11/12: vs. Coppin State

11/19 - 11/21: Maui Invitational (schedule still TBD)

11/27: vs. Sam Houston State

12/1: vs. UT-Arlington

12/4: vs. Georgetown (Jimmy V Classic @ Madison Square Garden)

12/8: vs. UCLA (@ Reliant Stadium)

12/15: vs. Texas State

12/19: vs. North Carolina

12/22: @ Michigan State

12/29: vs. Rice

Tulsa

If Tulsa isn’t playing Texas why did they put the transfer restrictions on the shooter who left their program a few weeks ago?

Honestly.

There is no reason, other than pettiness over potentially losing Clarkson (a Texas native, btw) to a regional power. Sadly, this all too commonplace. Wisconsin did this to one of their players recently - forbidding him from all of his first choices, Iowa St, any school in the ACC, any school in the Big 10 - as did that fucking falsely pious champion of the little guy, Phil Martelli at St Joseph. These coaches are utter pieces of shit who would howl like babies and head to the courts if someone tried to block them getting a job somewhere else.

pretty sure this one was the AD

but the point remains. the rule is completely unfair to the kids. and usually it is the coach playing the part of Dickhead Extraordinaire.

I think the “word” got out early that Texas was the destination school and Sooner AD wasn’t feeling it. sucks for us…but the comments from the Clarkson crew seem to indicate he was happy enough to land at mizzou.

Fantastic slate.

Maui has been announced:

North Carolina
Illinois
Butler
Chaminade
Marquette
Miss St
USC

That’s a hell of an offseason schedule.

I used to be really anti-France

but when you think about it objectively…wine, cheese, fine art, 35 hour work weeks, a society that’s completely OK with extra-marital affairs, etc.

and then you throw in Guy de Maupassant and Django Reinhardt on top of that. it’s not a bad little thing they’ve got going over there. just sayin’.

LaFayette

Let’s not forget that without their help, we’d still be English.

Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you're a mile away AND you have their shoes.

Meant the bracket

Not sure which teams Texas stands to draw yet.

Maui field is definitely more name than substance. All those teams look to be in down cycles but present a nice name cache.

I agree.

And that’s why I think that Texas and UNC will be on opposite sides of the bracket to set up a championship.

Love the schedule

should be 7 interesting games (calling it 2 in maui) and 6 cake walks out of 13. I love that schedule, and would be very happy with 10-3. Big 12 should be much easier this year, imo. I like us to run roughshod over everyone not named KU and sort of expect us to win the regular season title (but will be shocked if we win the tourney) with something like a 3 seed awaiting us in the NCAA tournament.

Super excited for football, less so, but still excited, for hoops. I think 2012-2013 calendar year is the year we turn around, what has been mostly depressing since 2009 or so, athletic department,

Phenomenal schedule

Back to the norm in the non-conference. Scheduled looked great when they showed it on Longhorn Network during the signing period. Looks just as good now. Cannot wait.

UT-Arlington could be a tough team

They nearly ran the table in Southland Conference play last season, then lost I think in the semifinal of the conference tournament. They had a run where they won 19 out of 20 games at one point late in the season. They graduated their top two scorers but return some solid contributors and might actually be better in 2012-13, which the Mavericks will spend in the WAC before moving to the Sun Belt Conference in 2013-14.
