SB Nation Hall of Fame (#SBNHOF): You Make The Picks
Carnival-goers - In an effort to ease the pain of these last weeks before actual football picks up again, we've decided to come up with our own SB Nation Hall Of Fame for college players. We have our own rules and my buddy Zach at Maize N Brew has laid it out beautifully, so I will outright purloin his post and then paraphrase.
Every year the college football Hall of Fame goes through the motions of inducting another class of players into its ranks, and every year we all groan and complain about the arcane selection rules and obvious snubs.
Well, SB Nation has had enough, and figured it is time for all of us to put our money where out mouth is.
Over the next few days the crew over here at Barking Carnival needs to come up with five nominees for the initial SB Nation Hall of Fame class. There are a few stipulations.
1. The player or coach must have been out of the game for at least four years (so no one who has played after 2007 or is currently playing).
2. Only one selection per position. Positions break down as such: QB, RB, WR, TE, OL, DL, LB, DB, ST, Corch.
3. Third, and this one is going to be tough, SB Nation is trying its best to adhere to the "You've seen 'em play" rule. I know we all love the old school generation of players and coaches but we're trying to tip the list heavily to the last 20 years.
4.Shoe ins: VY. Ricky. Who else?
Thus your task, Carnival-going commentariat, is to give us a list of who you want to add in these final three spots. I will pull all the names from the comments and at the end of the week we will have a vote for the remaining three spots. Feel free to leave your argument for why player X should be included in the final five, and if it is good I will include it in the final submissions to SB Nation.

do they have to be Longhorns?
the most dominant college defensive player I have ever seen was Steve Emtman (d-tackle).
He would be a nomination that I would put on par with VY and Ricky.

Longhorns!
Take your Steve Emtman idolatry over to UW Dawg Pound.

He should be in the talent HOF
He was wasted on some bad teams.

hampton and orakpo
Didn’t orakpo win the lombardi?
Non Horns- Suh and Orlando Pace. I remeber Pace dominating everything
by ShameAndFailure on Jun 21, 2025 4:00 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
Orakpo had one great year.
does that get you in to the Hall of Fame?
by Scipio Tex on Jun 21, 2025 4:04 PM CDT up reply actions
2008 so he is probably ineligible
But yes one year could make you a HOF.

My 5
Assuming only one per position:
VY
Ricky
Shipley
Hampton
Huff

I always felt
that he was a tad overrated. But still basically interchangeable with Hampton and Huff imo. Earl Thomas too.
by nordberg on Jun 21, 2025 4:20 PM CDT up reply actions
Earl Thomas played well after 2007.

"One hit wonders" in the Longhorn HOF
Maybe the HOF should have a quirky category like "one hit wonders’ for players who showed great promise on year, only to leave the program the next. My first nominee:
Butch Hadnot

QB Vince Young
RB Ricky Williams
WR Jordan Shipley
TE Dave Thomas
OL Justin Blalock
DE Tony Brackens
DT Casey Hampton
LB Derrick Johnson (Honorable Mention: Tyson King)
DB Michael Huff
K Phil Dawson

first of all Ricky is not an automatic pick
if it is 1 player per position.
Earl Campbell RB
Jerry Sisemore OL
Tommy Nobis LB
Johnnie Johnson DB
Ken Sims DL
Vince Young QB
Eric Metcalf KR
NOW YOU KIDS STAY OFF MY DAMN LAWN!!!

I take exception to Kenneth Sims at DL...
He was a good DL, but remember, he was Steve McMichael’s backup, and didn’t start until McMichael graduated. And you can’t say he developed into better player than Bam Bam; McMichael was All-Pro and Sims flamed out in pros.
Your other picks right on.

Sims flamed out on drugs.
Not lack of ability.

No love for Aaron Ross? Maybe not as good as Huff, but better than Griffin and at least deserving of an honorable mention if you only get to pick one DB.

If it's just one per position and we have to follow the 2007 rule, then...
QB: VY
RB: Ricky Williams
OL: Justin Blalock
DL: Brian Orakpo
LB: Derrick Johnson
DB: Michael Huff, honorable mention to Aaron Ross
TE: David Thomas, w/ honorable mention to Bo Scaife
ST: Ramonce Taylor
WR: Roy Williams

"You've seen 'em play" rule.
I saw Earl play for the Oilers, does that count?
Seriously, while I love and respect Ricky, Earl was a once-in-a-lifetime talent. I think you can make an argument that there’s Jim Brown and Earl, and then everybody else.
And I did see Ricky play for the Horns.
by mmharris on Jun 21, 2025 5:01 PM CDT reply actions
I saw Earl play for the Horns
As well as all the others on srr50’s list. I’ll just second the motion on all of them. (including the lawn)
Now "Longhorn in Mexico".

Oh, and if I hadn't seen Earl
Tommy Nobis would be a top pick for the greatest athlete ever to wear the Orange and White. A real shame he ended up with such a bad NFL team in the Falcons.

even though dj probably deserves it. i think we could sneak him by a panel of dudes just looking for a hook by leaving them w/ this “He played college football at Texas, and was the first player ever to be a finalist for both the Butkus and the Ted Hendricks Award.”
BOOM. HOF.

From the standpoint of “watching the game,” like sitting at the Tavern or DKR or in the fetal position in my living room, D Johnson and Brackens stick out to me as guys that just completely changed the game on defense. It’s harder to do that in the secondary, although the newer schemes allow people like Kenny V to give it a go. I just felt like DJ and TB were everywhere, and when you are watching the games, those guys really stick out.
VY and Ricky, and then my fifth would be Blalock. When the game got out of hand, he was a guy you actually could key on instead of watching the snap for pure fascination.
If I were to go secondary, seems no one has mentioned Jammer, who was damn fun to watch.
by Sleepy on Jun 21, 2025 6:28 PM CDT reply actions
I liked watching Blalock
for the sheer enjoyment of watching the guy across from him give up on the game sometime in the mid-2nd quarter. You could actually see the moment where they got tired of trying to wrestle a human bear.
by Scipio Tex on Jun 21, 2025 6:32 PM CDT up reply actions
Not to mention the fact that
Blalock executed what was probably the most important block in modern Longhorn football. If Blalock had not completely stonewalled the blitzing linebacker, 4th and 5 never would have happened. 2nd best player of the Mack Brown era imo.

Sendlein over Blalock
is illogical. I loved watching Lyle play, and he was key fixture in our best offensive line, but Blalock was and still is on another level.
