Attrition Watch – Thursday Update
Taylor Bible and Darius White have left the building ... shocker.
We'll sign 28-29 in this class meaning there's more attrition to come.
Thurs afternoon update:
Add Mark Buchanan, Dravantti Johnson, Blaine Irby, and Jamison Berryhill to the list of guys that won't be returning. Irby could have applied for a medical redshirt but has decided to move on.

Good for the future, but really a bummer about Bible and White — those were two of the guys in that class everyone was most excited about. Here’s to hoping our new evaluation and development eliminate massive busts.

When are we going to bounce some of the oversized clingers on the o-line? What have Kriegal and Buchannon done to earn their schollies? I’m ok with giving some of the Sophmores and yournger classman on the o-line sometime to season, but these guys have been getting free room and board and education to be non-contributors. These two have been on the roster for 3+ years….

Texastough, I feel ya! I’m disappointed too. Talent will never be able to overcompensate for DRIVE. Both of these guys should be very disappointed with themselves. They’re both ridiculously talented and leaving because they didn’t have enough fight/drive in them. As a former coach, this was always the most irritating/sadening part of this sport. Good luck to both of them, hopefully they find what’s important to them….

The Darius White move is about 4 months overdue, but at least it happened. Don’t fret the O-line numbers, they’re probably still counting Poehlmann our super Washington Generals-esque secret weapon at TE.

Kriegal was a DE in high school. I looked at his film he played like a beast. I thought he was going to contribute at that position. Maybe the old regime mind fucked all these players just the way they destroyed GG.

Buchanan walked with the Seniors on SR Day and is graduating early…so him along with White, Cotton, and Bible leaving puts us at 85, we will most probably need 1-3 more still…
I think Kreigal is likely on the way out, and I wouldn’t be shocked to see Hutchins and/or Doyle behind him, and Will Russ may also be moving on soon…

Kriegel has had injury problems, and shifted from DE to DT to the offensive line. I doubt he’ll ever play, but he did, at one time, have some skill.
Cotton was always a reach.
Bible was always reaching for a second helping. Neither had played or was going to, so . . . best of luck, guys.
Doyle and Hutchins just finished RS seasons, which is what most of us wish would happen to ALL offensive linemen. It’d be great if Snow had another year, if Hopkins was a RS freshman and not a sophomore, if Cochran had four years left instead of three. It is what it is.
Buchanan was a fourth-year junior who became a senior, for obvious reasons. I expect this will be the MO going forward — kids who redshirt their first year and aren’t making an impact by their third year will be (quietly) informed that there won’t be a fifth year.
I believe we’re going above 30 signings!!!!!!

Tower, thanks for the link and the info. I’m pretty sure Will Russ is the most worthless scholly on our roster. I hope you’re right and he’s gone. We’ll have to see about Doyle and Hutchins. I know the staff likes to give a player at least a couple of seasons to prove themselves worthy so they’re probably in the clear for this next season (barring any incidents). Hutchins will have to do something that completely puts him in the shithouse. Last I heard he’s practicing great and is one of the favorites of Coach Searels.

Wandering, you could spin it that way…. More, I think most of us are just rooting for the cultural change taking place in lockeroom. You’re making great points about not “rooting” for players to fail, or lose scholarships and be forced to leave. Let’s not gloat about it.
And there is more to it than that.
First, I’m pretty sure these decisions were not made last week. The kids affected probably knew a year ago that they needed to progress.
Some are eager to get into a situation where they can see the field, so they see it as a plus to get a fresh start (Gilbert, Chris Jones, Darius White maybe).
Finally, this: If a young man is setting a good example, doing his classwork (especially if he’s earning academic honors), if he’s a good teammate, role model and leader, he’s a lot more likely to stick around as a non-producing player for an extra season or two.

Doyle and Hutchins were BIG reaches for the 2011 class that was done in by lazy evaluations on McWhorter’s part, I agree that UT shouldn’t push them (or anybody) out the door but we are stacked at OL for years to come, but if SS likes them then great, if not then perhaps they would be better off transferring to Texas St or North Texas…

Mack has been here 14 years. He is not trap-dooring guys. He is probably just explaining to them what their future looks like- they have been passed on the depth chart by younger guys, they are not likely to get on the field, and that to keep their scholarship they will have no margin of error on rules and grades, and that they will be expected to be enthusiastic tackling dummies and to dress with the walk-ons. If they can do that and keep good attitudes, they’re probably welcome to stay. This is an example of being candid with guys, and not feeding a fiction that they are players.

Saban thinks this is weak and lacks creativity. Saban will never approve until Mack tells a guy like Bible he has hypothyroidism and must give up football or he’ll combust into pink mist on the football field righ there in front of his parents and he wouldn’t want that, would he? Then of course Bible would drop down to FCS where he is medically cleared (turns out he was fat and lazy) and play well enough to get drafted.
Saban’s a liar that has moved guys out based on medical problems that didn’t exist.
I have no problem with Mack doing this to guys like Bible. It does irk me if he ends up doing it to a guy like Nkwopara. Big difference in my book as there’s a big difference between Saban and Mack.

I am baffled by Darius White. Any one of us could have predicted Cotton, Graham, Bible, etc long before this happened. Just completely bizarre how that did not work out.

Hutchins was not a reach at all. He needed to gain weight but has great footwork and strikes with his long arms. I just posted to the Highwayman asking if he had heard any rumor of him to TE because he could be a good one imo. If he puts on weight, I do not see him moving from tackle because we are very very short on depth there, not loaded as someone said.

This is about changing the culture and not about running guys off.
If the precedent is set that no dead weight will be tolerated, then dead weight will not be partial to showing up for the free meals and education or whatever they try to get gratis.
If players that are scared of competition get run off at signing, then we don’t have to deal with their non-competitive ass during the season. We want guys who are ready to roll and work for their job.

Tower,
We are far from stacked at OL. We have a handful of freshmen and incoming recruits that have yet to prove anything. Flowers, Greenlea, Estelle, Riser, Hughes all either have not seen any action or at least any meaningful playing time.
As for the returning starters — I would guess that Walters is about the only cog of the returning line that performed at a high level all year and that we should feel completely comfortable with. Hopkins will be fine if he is able to move to his true position inside.
Right now our OL is a combination of experienced pieces that should not have experience since none of them should have seen the field this year, people playing out of position, and kids that we have high hopes for but could just as easily turn into the next Tray Allen as they could the next Lyle Sendlein.
Hawkins makes life easier for Searles next year, but the man still has at least 2 years of work to do to rebuild the damage that was done. The fact that Estelle is likely to play a lot of snaps as a true freshmen with a body that still needs to bulk up should tell you all you need to know about how “stacked” our OL is, especially at the tackles.
by Big Ern on Dec 13, 2025 7:48 PM CST reply actions
^Espinoza did a fine job for a freshman, and Flowers would probably be starting for every single other team in the conference. Throw in Riser, Porter, Hutchins and they’re basically loaded inside even if Ashcraft moves on.
Tackle is obviously harder, but it’s the first time in about 3-4 seasons that the position isn’t being manned by a shaky or disappointing or previously unknown junior or senior….that is a very good thing.

Big Ern-
I love getting our linemen a redshirt year as much as the next guy but we don’t have that luxury yet…if Searls can keep some fringe 2nd/3rd string talent back a year then I’m all for it, but without a solid QB we need a great OL to help out our running game.
Espinosa (who was redshirted) did better than expected this year so we likely have center locked down. Cochran was a huge surprise and if he keeps it up, he along with the JUCO Hawkins could hold down our tackle spots for the next two years easy. Walters and Hopkins seem to fit in at Guard but we also have plenty of option for the inside of the line including Porter and Ashcraft (who have both been redshirted) and that doesn’t even mention Greenlea or Flowers. Riser is an inside guy who will most probably get a redshirt, but Estelle may have to help out year 1 due to the lack of talent on the outside.
So it looks like we are pretty stacked on the inside and slightly thin on the outside, Paden Kelly and Poehlmann can stop gap us a bit there but they aren’t real solutions. The only reasons I felt that throwing Hutchins and Doyle’s names out there was okay is due to the amount of depth we have in the inside. If Poehlmann move’s to TE full time and Hughes goes defense or TE or if any of the guys I mentioned above are athletic enough to move to tackle and the guard position thins out then we’ll probably be fine but if not we are definitely bloated on the inside of the line and could use some attrition there…from a tactical standpoint. If the kids stay out of trouble, kill it in the classroom, are team players and want to spend their collegiate career on the scout team then power to them, but I would have an honest talk with them about going elsewhere if that doesn’t sound particularly appealing to them, many programs would love to have both of them…

I want my alma mater to do things the right way. It’s one thing if these guys are leaving on their own volition, but if they’re being pressured into leaving, that’s just wrong. They made a commitment to The University. UT should uphold its end of the bargain.
Furthermore, this absolves the crappy job the “previous” coaching staff did. They’re the ones who fucked up evaluating and/or developing these guys. They made their bed. They should have to lie in it.

Scholarships are renewed on a yearly basis. There is a reason for it. The great thing about sports is that it is competitive, let the best man win. It does not discriminate on race or religion or other non relevant factors. Why should it discriminate on the basis of seniority? When you accept a scholarship at Texas, you are joining an elite program that attempts to prepare as many of its athletes as possible for the NFL. You accept that you are going to have to perform at a very high level to stay on the team. It does not always work out. When it does not work out, it is hard but fair that a more competitive athlete get that scholarship. That is the way it works in real life so this is a good life lesson. Besides allocating scholarships to those who are most deserving, attrition also motivates all scholarship holders to work hard to hang onto their scholarships.

Not trying to be a dick or anything but, if a student gets a scholastic scholarship and puts up a 1.5 GPA, then he/she loses her scholarship, right? At least I think that’s how it goes as my wife had to re-up each year to retain her academic scholarship. What’s the difference in yanking a schollie from an under-performing athlete? Especially one that - allegedly - has an attitude problem.

If you’ve been going to class and doing your work, and after two years, the football team decides they no longer want to carry you on scholership, you just got two years of free room, board, and tuition from the school. I’m sure the athletic department would offer to help you out with the financial aid office so you could finish your degree at UT if you want to give up football.
If your more interested in football than school, then hit the bricks, pal, because you’re clearly not here for the learning.
by Bateshorn on Dec 14, 2025 8:59 AM CST reply actions
Arriviste,
I agree Dom Espinosa did fine for a freshman and that Cochran helped out by taking snaps at tackle. But, I would argue that both ultimately had uneven years, and neither should have played this year. Espinosa got his shit pushed in by any above average DT or NT and had significant trouble with anyone of significant size and strength, and Cochran seemed to take steps backwards at the tail end of the season.
Should both be better after another off-season with Wylie and with more experience under the belt? Yes. I am not ready to act like the OL is no longer a team weakness until I see actual results against quality teams, and I think you are still at least another recruiting class away from this line having depth and experience - right now, you are banking on contributions from a bunch of kids that are still in high school. That is exactly what needs to be fixed. It should be a foregone conclusion that you redshirt if you are an OL recruit coming to Texas.
by Big Ern on Dec 14, 2025 9:11 AM CST reply actions
I guess if you’re either a t-shirt fan or an alumnus who sees these guys as nothing more than football chattel to be discarded if they don’t live up to expectations instead of fellow Longhorns, The University’s honor doesn’t mean a thing.
I’m somewhat amused when people around here get all excited when Recruit X commits to UT, making plans that he’ll jump right in to a starting position. However, these same people will gladly hold the exit door open if Recruit X doesn’t do so by his 2nd year on the 40 Acres.
Yes, life is hard. Everyone isn’t getting a trophy.
And I’m not under any illusion that some of these guys are here solely b/c of football.
But if a student-athlete is doing the right thing - making progress towards a degree & competing on the field - he shouldn’t have to face having his scholarship not getting renewed b/c he hasn’t been able to crack the 2-deep.
Mack has kept plenty of players who have had legal problems. Of course, they were starters or were very valuable to the team.
I guess the criteria isn’t “nice kids who graduate.”
by Joetx on Dec 14, 2025 9:42 AM CST reply actions
Obviously, if your making degree progress, your a good citizen, you practice hard, and make contributions on the scout squad, then at TaylorTRoom put it above, I would hope Mack (and I believe he will) find a way to allow you to get your degree and keep your schollie, or as I said: work with the financial aid department to minimize the cost going forward.
If your just here for football, then the program owes you nothing more than what you can justify by on the field performance.

I don’t think that’s the case in 2012, for the first time in a while.
The highest ranked true freshman on the depth chart is probably Estelle - who probably starts his career competing with two RS Fresh in Greenlea and Doyle for the role of 5th choice tackle - after Cochran, Hawkins, Hopkins (if necessary), Kelley.

To all the people that are perplexed by D. White’s failure and him telling another recruit not to come here……
Can you really blame a guy with NFL dreams for wanting to transfer out of a situation where he just ran the gauntlet of Gilbert,Ash,McCoy as his QBs. As I see it, those three really didn’t give receivers with White’s skill set an opportunity to shine.
The Shipleys and Welkers of the world are fine with just about any qb under center because they run quick underneath routes that rely more on timing than anything else, but a primary deep threat receiver needs a qb that has both an accurate and powerful arm.
I would have a bad attitude too if I went to a school that clearly didn’t have its shit together regarding an essential position(QB) to my success and future draft status.

Agree with Bates and Taylor. Seems that this was not cutting kids because they were not talented enough, but rather pushing kids towards the exit that had attitude/effort problems.

If he is still unhappy, that’s his business and his right. If he is actively trying to damage the entity that got him into UT and pays his way, that is just wrong. Maybe it’s immaturity, but that’s a reason not really an excuse. If he thought he could remain on the team while doing such things, that’s just selfish and idiotic.

Young people, you do not HAVE to do anything, ever, except to be born, and to die. In between those two events, it is your prerogative to do, and you can do, whatever you wish. HOWEVER, it behooves you to be aware of the consequences of both your actions, and your inactions, and to prepare yourself to DEAL with those consequences. — Miss Nell Speir, 6th Grade

I lost a full-ride academic scholarship while at UT because I partied too much and my grades suffered. I don’t see why an underperforming athlete should keep his scholarship either unless the conditions for keeping the scholarship don’t include how well he is progressing as a football player and only cover making academic progress and being a decent citizen. White could be jettisoned for breaking team rules, since I am sure bad mouthing the program to recruits would violated some sort of behavioral code.

I’m pretty damn confident that Mack Brown isn’t treating kids unfairly or trap-dooring anyone. Attrition to some degree is going to be a fact of life in any big-time program, and as long as Mack is here I think we’ll handle it as humanely and fairly as any big-time program does.
I would have personally rented the U-Haul to get White and Bible out of town - White’s malcontent nature was on display in the Twitterverse for well over a year, and with a D1 S&C program and training table there is absolutely no excuse for an alleged athlete to devolve into a fat sack of suet as Bible decided to do.
The typical SEC oversigning shenanigans are about gaming the system by bringing in more athletes than the 25/85 rule intends to allow you and then running off the low end of the bell curve through specious means - and doing this continually, as a matter of course to gain an advantage by flaunting (at minimum) the spirit of the law. We’ve landed in an odd situation because an entire offensive staff retired on the job, allowing us to accumulate a glut of lazily recruited and poorly developed guys that shouldn’t ever happen at a program of this magnitude. That sort of situation demands rectification, and an oversized 2012 class with higher-than-normal attrition are one-time components of that rectification that I’m 100% down with.
I’ve got many a bone to pick with Mack, but the ethics of the program isn’t on my list.

Didn’t realize BC was now censoring for being too right. Figured ya’ll would want to hear my opinion since I was spot on about Bible and White. Oh well, ignorance is bliss I suppose.

I’m pretty certain Mack does not take away scholarships…he sits down with the underperforming player, along with the co-ordinators and the player’s position coach, and they calmly tell the player that he will NEVER see another down of playing time. If the player is OK with that then they get a free education and can finish out their 4 years.; most, however aren’t OK with it and are only too happy to transfer.

"I’m sure the athletic department would offer to help you out with the financial aid office so you could finish your degree at UT if you want to give up football. "
I think that’s a big assumption. I don’t recall there being (other than medical redshirts) scholarships giving out for underperforming athletes. That assumption is so that our conscience doesn’t bother us.

I suspect D.White’s schollie was actually yanked, if the reports about his malfeasance are true. But generally, I get the impression that Mack doesn’t just pull scholarships, although it’s his right to do so, since all scholarships are year-to-year.
I wasn’t asserting scholarships being handed out to players no longer on the team. I was indicating that it seems reasonable for players leaving the team to focus on their studies receiving help from the AD office with the Financial Aid office in assembling a package of loans and/or need grants to ensure they are able to finish their studies, assuming grades are maintained, etc.

I think it telling that when Mack Brown arrived all the attrition visited upon Mackovic’s dead wood was handled as if it the players were leaving for better opportunities for PT elsewhere. There were a lot of kind words from both sides. It was much the same every year since. Until now. Combine that with the JUCO takes and the urgency on Mack’s part is clearly immense. Taking an experience QB transfer should no longer be considered much of a stretch.

@Newy25 Mack would all but have to develop a witness protection program to protect White from his teammates after the junk he pulled w/recruits, plus attitude/work ethic issues. With his God-given abilities, plus facilities, staff at his disposal, White’s performance, or lack thereof, is on him. Sooner than later, he’ll rue the day for the opportunity he squandered.

That presumes major shifts in either mentality or circumstances for both. Leopards/spots and all that. But he may be able to reach them in ways Stoops/Mack (and of course the multiple coaches on each staff) cannot.

These names kinda make me feel bad. Anyone else? I mean White was a punk and obviously Bible was doing nothing, but the other guys contributed and Irby’s story was great. This is getting slightly slimey. That being said, all will be forgotten with another National Championship.

You don’t know the circumstances of how this is happening so it’s presumptuous to call it slimey.
There was nothing slimey about Irby. It was purely his decision because he wants to still be able to walk when he’s a 30 year old man. As for the others it may be nothing more than an honest discussion with Mack in which he tells them they won’t see the field. If they’re good with that then fine, but if not he’ll facilitate them going somewhere that they have the chance. I don’t see that as slimey, just honest.

Regarding Thursday’s update: I think all the names on that list have graduated or on track to graduate in the spring. They are moving on with their lives - where I hope they great things happen. Not an APR impact. And it frees room for other athletes to join the team.

Agree with Nunna. Heard parts of the Irby talk and he said his knee has been sore and he was concerned about future injuries.

After what Irby did this year, I don’t think there is a chance in the world that Mack ushered him out. He would have been welcome back with open arms.

Unless it was indeed a future health issue, with another year under Wylie and familiarity w/offense, Irby would’ve been a definite contributor in 2012, wouldn’t he? Regardless, hats off and Hook’em to the best comeback story in CFB for 2011.

Although the right kind of attrition is good, I’m bummed about Berryhill. If Longhornscott taught me one thing, that guy was a difference maker in the run game. Hopefully Harsin dials up plenty of alignments with Brown/Gray behind Bergeron. Talk about getting in the D’s heads.

by bHero on Dec 15, 2025 8:04 PM CST reply actions
I’m worried about Akina leaving. Sure he can’t coach zone, but man can he coach man-to-man, which is why some of the hotshots come here. It’s been well known that Hawaii has always been his dream job. Heck, I plan on retiring there! So, can’t blame him for chasing his dream. My thought is that he won’t get it based on his age and that he’s always been a DB coach. But….he could get a shot at the DC position, yet another worry. Oh well, I guess we wait.

Bad, but good reasoning. Always better to quit while your head still works.
So… Bergeron to FB or what?
by Tex Long on Dec 16, 2025 9:17 AM CST reply actions
I don’t think Bergeron goes to FB but stays at TB. He was an outstanding power TB for that small window where he was healthy. Splitting the carries between Gray, Brown, and Bergeron will reduce the probability of injury, which is a real big deal. Somebody else will block. Presumably our TEs bulk by 10 or 15 pounds in the off season and practice catching tennis balls every waking moment that they aren’t lifting, running, eating, or playing basketball. Change the target weight for TEs from 235 to 250 and their blocking should improve quite a bit.
by Kafka on Dec 16, 2025 11:15 PM CST reply actions
Probably the Wild packages get expanded some next season, maybe even for the bowl game. I could see an option pitch added to the package and even a short flare or dump pass to the flat by the Wild QB to stretch the field horizontally.
If Gray runs most of the wild plays next season and his dad wants him to run the ball no more than 12 to 15 times per game, Gray will use up most of his run quota just running the wild plays. My guess is that when not running the Wild, the horns will try to get the ball to Gray in space to give him more room to run and to minimize injuries to Gray. Gray will probably be used as a decoy quite a bit (very useful and no contact)
It may be that Brown and Bergeron split most of the TB carries next season If the big 3 get 45 carries between them, that doesn’t leave that many carries for anybody else.
