NCAA Basketball Championship Open Thread
Two blue bloods. Two of the best players in college basketball in Thomas Robinson and Anthony Davis. Two of the best coaches in Bill Self and John Calipari, who have conveniently played for these stakes before.
Your two cents after the jump.

If it's close
can we pick against Kansas? Their ability to get and deny good looks at the basket in crucial 2nd half possessions has been the story of the tournament, other than Kentucky’s sheer dominance.
Withey vs. Davis is an interesting individual matchup.

Screw conference pride...
…pulling for Big Blue Nation.
The way Calipari has reignited the Kentucky basketball program is unbelievable. And to do it with a rotating roster is simply unheard of.
Incredible to think that he’s able to mesh freshman egos so well. Elite 8, Final Four, National Championship game in his 3 years as Wildcat basketball coach.
Good lord…only way to get “competitive balance” in college bball will be to get Cal his title and start the “Cal to NYC” or “Cal to Miami” NBA rumors going…

Calitucky by 12 or more.
Just too much firepower on both ends. Of course KU should have lost already and hasn’t, so who knows. Bill Self is a tough customer.

This may be a "Kids get off my lawn" moment
But The Fray just effed up the national anthem.

For KU to win
1. They need to slow it down and have their smalls dropping into transition D instead of crashing the boards
2. Tyshaun has to undress Teague defensively and prevent any semblance of half-court offense
3. Robinson has to get position on Davis early and attack him up through his chest
UK’s talent 1-5 is better than KU. There’s no percentage in the Jayhawks allowing a basketball game to break out.

YOU DO NOT COME INTO JEFF WITHEY'S HOUSE
Unless you have been invited for brunch.
by Scipio Tex on Apr 2, 2026 8:29 PM CDT reply actions
Don't play up tempo, Jayhawks.
You will lose.

Kansas is being seduced
into believing that they can run with the Wildcats.
Uh no.

I've never seen a unibrow that looks like a bat before
I’m waiting for that thing to fly off of Davis’ face and transform into Count Chocula.

Nice. Is he from Eastern Europe? And raised near a Soviet nuclear reactor?
I swear, Braun and Norelco will be all over him once he goes prol.

hate the pumpkin reference
Jeez, stop with the pumpkin.
This is one physical game inside. Kentucky is collapsing inside and almost daring KU to shoot from the outside.
by mdhorn on Apr 2, 2026 8:55 PM CDT reply actions
Kentucky can get in the lane at will. That’s not good for KU.

nothing available in the early thrust….
Clark, what the hell does that mean?
by mdhorn on Apr 2, 2026 9:08 PM CDT reply actions
Kansas on a cold streak that is fatal.
And they insist on going inside it seems. Trying to get Kentucky in foul trouble? It’s not working. Well, this game won’t keep me up tonight.

Are you kidding?
The NCAA wouldn’t dream of taking on one of their top moneymakers.
by srr50 on Apr 2, 2026 9:13 PM CDT reply actions
Good, then they have to explain
or justify to everybody else how Calipari reloads every year with one and done McDonald All Americans.
by mdhorn on Apr 2, 2026 9:16 PM CDT up reply actions
The funny thing is
that the more Calipari wins with those guys, the less he’ll have to cheat. His program will get considerably more clean year by year because the kids know the drill and see the precedent. His most hardcore cheating happened when he was trying to rise at UMASS and early on at Memphis.
by Scipio Tex on Apr 2, 2026 9:21 PM CDT up reply actions
Well, they have before.
But money pouring out of a Fed-Ex envelope will do that.
by Scipio Tex on Apr 2, 2026 9:19 PM CDT up reply actions
it'll be heartwarming
when Davis and Barkley can later commiserate about how they were paid as basketball players in the SEC.
by mdhorn on Apr 2, 2026 9:23 PM CDT up reply actions
I was kidding. This team is definitely clean. Davis can't even afford to groom himself.
This one will probably stick.

As much as the pregame hype was about Davis vs. Robinson...
This game has been about the wing players from Kentucky being superior to Kansas. Kentucky just needs to push on the interior matchup and there wing players will win the game for them.
Kentucky has so many weapons, its not like Kansas played awful but Kentucky breezed to what an 18 pt lead a one time. Kansas will fight but this is going to be a mountainous uphill battle.
by HornsUpInLA on Apr 2, 2026 9:23 PM CDT reply actions
KU's best players are playing pretty well
but their role players are getting destroyed by Lamb, Kidd-Gilchrist, Jones.
Anthony Davis has real depth in his all-around game.
by Scipio Tex on Apr 2, 2026 9:24 PM CDT reply actions
Watching KY defensively swarm the ball inside is pretty awesome. 21-13 on the boards is pretty telling too.
by mdhorn on Apr 2, 2026 9:27 PM CDT reply actions
People rag Calipari
But getting freshman egos to play their ass off on defense is a major achievement. It helps that he has a young Marcus Camby running around in there, but that doesn’t account for the team concept.
by Scipio Tex on Apr 2, 2026 9:32 PM CDT reply actions
understood about the coaching
but he seems more like an agent.
by mdhorn on Apr 2, 2026 9:36 PM CDT reply actions

He’d probably take that as a compliment.

already forgot
the entire interview with Obama. Not playing the politics card but I can’t remember a thing about what they were talking about.
by mdhorn on Apr 2, 2026 9:40 PM CDT reply actions
I'm not saying that Kansas DIDN'T get four clean strips in a row down there
I’m just saying it will literally be a first in the history of organized basketball if they did.
by nobis60 on Apr 2, 2026 9:47 PM CDT reply actions
Davis is so fucking active.
He doesn’t have to score a point to dominate. 13 boards, 4 assists, 5 blocks.
by Scipio Tex on Apr 2, 2026 9:49 PM CDT up reply actions
ha....they had numbers
but how the hell did Kentucky repeatedly come up with the ball with 4 KU guys down low?
by mdhorn on Apr 2, 2026 9:49 PM CDT reply actions
no doubt there was a scrum below the rim
KU mugged low but Kentucky goes up for the rebound. They don’t wait for the ball to come off or down—they get it. I almost expect to see them board their missed freethrows.

by HornsUpInLA on Apr 2, 2026 10:35 PM CDT up reply actions
I had Kentucky first half -4, Kentucky -6 for the game.
At half, I hedged with a -2 Kansas bet and I hit the sweet spot for all 3. Shew

Two lottery picks (including #1) and five total first rounders on the team, IMO. Crazy talent, y’all. And Calipari coached ’em up.
KU has nothing to hang their heads about. Overachieved to get there.
by Scipio Tex on Apr 2, 2026 10:47 PM CDT reply actions
No doubt. Kansas got to the the Championship game and made them sweat a little at the end.
I’m sure they’re not happy with first loser, but it was a hell of a season and Self deserved the Naismith. Now I can go back to hating them again.
