Project 2013: Jake Raulerson
Jake Raulerson is a coach's wet dream. You watch the tape and you say "yep, that's how you play football. Keep doing that. OK, see you later." You don't need to wear yourself out yelling, or get on his case, because wanting to crush anything you put in front of him is in his DNA already. Nobody needs to motivate a lion to maul an antelope.
He was identified early as a must have, not only by Texas but by 40 or so other schools, and treated as such. He's clearly a very talented prospect, but is he in the same stratosphere as the Cameron Hughes and Kent Perkins type player?
For starters, he stands in stark contrast to the rest of Stacy Searels' choices, a relatively thin 6'5 250, lacking the size/speed ratio of his future teammates. And while Tyrone Swoopes gets questioned for playing sub-par competition, Raulerson is afforded the benefit of the doubt. Videos exist of him dominating other top recruits a year older than him, but in high school, a complete grasp of fundamentals can dominate athletic ability well beyond your own. It's why our state champions are mostly from affluent suburbs.
One of the country's most successful high school teams, De La Salle, in Concord, CA, consists mainly of 180 lb. white boys who care way more than their opponents. Yes, they have the occasional future NFLer (and by now have grown to a point where good players flock to the school), but for the most part they are the modern day, whiter version of TC Williams HS. They run the same offense with the same methodology and they beat the shit out of everyone that steps in front of them, size be damned.
So what to make of this very interesting prospect?
I don't know how to project size very well, unless the player is obviously skinny or tall. Raulerson already looks like an action star, with a thick neck and arms. I don't know where his body goes from here. What he is not is the genetically freakish athlete than can just walk into a different meeting room and start rushing the passer, I don't see an Aaron Humphrey ceiling here. I see a kid who is an expert at what he does, and any talk of moving positions is just a hedge in case he can't gain the needed size.
However, how much size does he need? Leverage and footwork go an awful long way on the line of scrimmage. Jake uses 100% of his 250 pounds, and plays from a position of power on every down. He'll be asked to block down or zone block, which does not require the big ass you'd expect, but does require good footwork, leverage and strength, things he has in spades.
However being undersized, or slow, means you have to play perfect football in order to win. If a bigger DL gets into his body, he can wreck he play by pushing Raulerson back into the play. It seems absurd now that anyone could push Raulerson around, remember that any team worth beating is going to have at least one good lineman that is good enough to do so. He does a lot of reach blocking on his highlight video, and most of those would get strung out by a stronger opponent.
His good news for you is that he's probably the most polished, perfect offensive lineman I have ever seen in high school. Watch how his feet don't gain ground while the rest of his body does in order to get his exceptional body lean, or how once he's on you, he's on you until the whistle. He understands his job and executes it thoroughly. His pass pro is rough, but whose isn't? He gets the job done.
And it's not as if the size he'll need is all that uncommon. Most people gain 10 pounds by doing nothing more than turning 19, and hell, he's not even a senior yet. His neck tells me he already knows how to dominate a workout, and his technique tells me he loves what he does. He might need a redshirt +1, but I'd guess he'll end up where he wants. Most lineman need a few years, but in this case, he's waiting on size, not technique.
Bottom line is, he needs another 30 pounds at least to play OL, and my personal opinion is that Texas will always have better DEs than what he could become. Texas drafted a first baseman, either he hits or he is out of the game. Worst case scenario, Texas ends up with a better Neal Tweedie. He'll probably end up in the Will Allen / Lyle Sendlein / Kasey Studdard class, with a decent shot of being someone as good as Dan Neil. I apologize for not being able to think of any black player to compare him to.

"Most people gain 10 pounds by doing nothing more than turning 19"
How much do they gain by doing nothing more than getting that surgery? Thanks SR, forgot about that.

You seem down
on Raulerson’s upside. The fact that he’s dominant technically and still skinny doesn’t concern me in the least. I could see him at 290 pretty easily and either a dominant DE/DT or an NFL Tackle.
This is the kind of kid that TCU would have put in the 1st round after developing them in S&C and letting them grow into a position.

OL
I was wondering when a post like this on Raulerson would come out, after reading the one about Hughes and Estelle. While Estelle and Hughes fit the high upside, raw athletic freak OL’s that the post said we should covet, Raulerson is more in the mold of the highschool OL with exceptional technique/leverage.

Raulerson is not unathletic...
He doesn’t just get by on technique.
300+ pound athletic freaks don’t just flow from the HS ranks, you have to project and build them. I think Raulerson’s offer list speaks for itself.

Can he catch?
We seem to be a bit short of eight schollies at TE. He could handle the blocking part right now, imo. Pöhlmann with footwork, and route-running is practice more than it’s genetics… but… can he catch?

This is the first thing that popped into my mind as well
We’re playing 280 lb linemen at TE right now. A 250 lb guy with good blocking technique that can catch what hits him in the hands can play on the LOS for the Longhorns today.

With that footwork and his current size
Raulerson could be a fullback. Don’t you think Brown, Bergeron and Gray would love breaking off of lead blocks and second level blocks this guy would lay. He stays with the blocks as well as any one I’ve seen.
by lonesome devil on Apr 10, 2025 10:27 AM CDT reply actions
fullback gets a head start and plays low
someone like Raulerson who can engage with someone on the line should stay on the line. Think about how he could impact our running plays by being able to take on a defensive end heads up and free our lesser blocker or OL to get to the 2nd Level.
by Nickel Rover on Apr 10, 2025 10:31 AM CDT up reply actions
he's 6'5
and he’s specifically trained. He’ll be on the LOS someplace.

If he can't gain the weight to play OT
What about to play Center?
However, I don’t think it will matter much. I think we all need to remember that most OT wind up blocking DE who are about 260 tops themselves. He has dominated at the camps he has gone to. He will be fine. You don’t have 40 offers from all the best schools unless people believe you will make it somewhere.

You've mentioned Dan Neil a couple of times
I’m curious as to your angle. Dan was 6-1, 285, built like a fire hydrant, and blessed with incredible athleticism (he won the off season testing for the DL and OL every year he was at Texas). Are you talking technique/attitude?
by Scipio Tex on Apr 10, 2025 12:07 PM CDT reply actions
Didn't know that
I always loved Dan Neil’s game. One of my favorite Longhorns. Maybe tops at OL for me.
by Monahorns on Apr 10, 2025 1:09 PM CDT up reply actions
technique and attitude, yes,
but mostly just that level of effectiveness. I don’t think Raulerson is a tackle, and he’s never going to be the 300 pound guy you normally put at guard. He’ll play below 300 and he’ll maul people.
Neil played in a wide zone system in Denver, and Raulerson is already an expert at that style, too. I am not sure I’ve ever seen a high school player who does that specific thing so well before.

I got a question:
If Raulerson’s ceiling is badass offensive lineman, is his floor “blocking TE”?

Unless the best way to describe your blocking TE is “an extra blocking surface.”

Stack 30-40 on this kid and
You have a real threat either as a RT or perhaps a RG / LG. Not that I was ever remotely as good as this kid, but using the technique I learned attending a Sophomroe and Junior Summer D! program taught me serious amounts of technique that I routinely used to handle much bigger DT’s as a Center. Being very smart and knowing your shit takes you a long way, at least in High School. Guys with great technique know how to use that 40 extra pounds on the opponent against them using leverage and really excellent pad height control.
Color me totally impressed. Stick him with a RS year with Bennie and watch the fuck out!

motor
The kid can play interior line or SDE. The kid has the motor you can not teach. I can see 285 in his future. You have a lot of high motor guys that make big contributions. JJ Watt is the obvious example. Wasn’t even a AQ recruit. Guys motor just never stops. It seems almost ridiculous to say about a top 100 recruit, but I see over-achiever in him. Just seems like from the stories I have heard that there is no way that this kid will not get 100 percent of his talent

Go find 3 starting tackles in college football
that weigh less than 270 lbs and are not at Service Academy. If he is going to play in the offensive line he will need to gain weight, but I also think he is a kid who is going to gain weight.

I gave thoughts on this awhile back, so I'll just recap and link
In The Trenches
Based on his current size and projecting growth I think the most likely positions:
Offense-
Center. As in fantastic production level center, pick your favorite. Nick Mangold anyone?
or
Tackle. Hope for Matt Light sort of production.Defense-
3 Tech(nique) Tackle. Chris Hovan…preferably without issues.
or
End. You like Kyle Vanden Bosch? This is the best position option if he doesn’t pack on as many pounds.
