Five Texas Longhorns Commits Are At Nike's The Opening 2012
The Opening 2012 is here.
— Nike Football (@usnikefootball) July 5, 2025
First, a little mood enhancer.
And for your refractory period, Tom Luginbill previews The Opening. There's never been a shortage of talent at The Opening, an elite event that brings the top football players from around the country together to the Nike campus in Beaverton, Ore., to take part in a litany of competitions. In fact, the 2011 iteration of the event brought in an impressive 60 recruits from the ESPN 150.
Five of this year's crop are currently committed to the good guys:
| #1 QB-DT | Whitewright, TX Whitewright High School |
6'4'' | 220 |
| #5 OT | Celina, TX Celina High School |
6'5'' | 250 |
| #14 WR | Houston, TX Cypress Falls High School |
5'10'' | 170 |
| #14 DT | Fort Worth, TX Arlington Heights High |
6'4'' | 310 |
| #40 WR | Dallas, TX Jesuit Prep School |
6'4'' | 203 |
There are also some targets in attendance including the much discussed Ricky Seals-Jones.
What happens at The Opening?
There are plenty of drills, workouts and competitions during the four-day showcase, but there are three major disciplines that make up the bulk of the festivities -- The Elite Lineman Challenge, the SPARQ Rating National Championship and the Nike 7ON. The athletes selected to participate in The Opening will all compete in the SPARQ Rating National Championship before breaking off to participate in either the Elite Lineman Challenge or Nike 7ON.
You can read more about each of these disciplines here, but the real excitement of course is going to come at the end of the weekend, during the Sexual Awareness seminar. Two hundred hookers from around the world will be imported, and each camper, armed with only a thermos of coffee and two thousand dollars cash, tries to visit as many countries as he can. The winner of course is named King of the Sexual Awareness seminar and is allowed to rape and pillage the neighboring Nike dorms and buildings.
They don't call it Beaverton for nothing.
We'll have some folks in attendance, including SBN Recruiting analyst Bud Elliott, Esq. Follow him on Twitter @SBNRecruiting and read articles and look at photos at SB Nation college football recruiting hub. There is also a rumor Scipio Tex may parachute in for some consulting across all of the disciplines.
If you dig this sort of thing, there are daily round ups on your TV and WatchESPN app.
When: July 5-8
On ESPNU: July 6-8 (8 p.m. ET)

I believe the OU signees perform the "toolbox" shuttle run
…where they sprint between boxes of handtools selecting the appropriate weapon to wield when spurned during the Sexual Awareness seminar.

Our old friend Magnus told me the other day that he was going to the opening at beaverton. Turns out I COMPLETELY misunderstood what he was telling me.
Could be wrong, but I don’t think Swoopes also plays DT. That would be awesome though.

He could do it
But I think maybe it means Dual Threat.

Could also stand for
something else, but lets’s all hope that we don’t have a QB recruit suffering from the “DT’s”. On a related note, if a QB suffers from the DT’s, does that mean his offensive tackles are not doing their job, or did he just have too much to drink last night?
Living as close as I do to Oregon, should I try to get there for this, or is admission limited to highly respected members of the blogosphere?

Shit
You don’t even have a Tumblr account. Blogs are passé.

I am soooo damn glad none of TCU's recruits were deemed good enough
to participate in it this year.
