Happy Birthday Darrell Royal

He was always the smartest man in the room, yet never felt compelled to prove it.

Darrell Royal turned 88 Friday, which means he has not walked the sidelines in 36 years.

Makes no difference.

He is the man who ushered Texas into the national elite of college football, and he did so without ever succumbing to the cult of personality. Just ask Penn State how that worked out.

After the jump you will find a video that was produced to celebrate Royal's 85th birthday. There are no football highlights, but it does give Longhorn fans another aspect of Coach Royal and a Life Well Lived.

Ditto.

When he was already on Mount Olympus in the sporting world, he took the time to give this college kid much more than the time of day.

Today, on the occasions I run across somebody who’s really good with people — a people person — I tell them about Darrell Royal. THE people person.

"Coach"

The superlatives that can be encompassed by a five letter appellation can be substantial and in it’s application to this man they are in fact.

Hook ’em Coach.

I believe it was Dan Jenkins

Who said it best: "I know as much about football as the next man, unless the next man is Darrell Royal.

Happy Birthday, Coach.

Happy Birthday, Coach Royal

You’re right that he was always the smartest man in the room…also had the most class.

The only trophy...

The only trophy that expresses a befitting tribute to DKR, …was as big as Memorial Stadium.
