2014 RB Daniel Gresham Commits to Longhorns, Commit #4

The Brave New World marches on with the commitment of powerful FB Daniel Gresham. Gresham is thought to be a package deal with elite OL prospect Demetrius Knox and we'll see if it plays out that way.

Gresham is a powerful runner with terrific balance and applicable strength, a crushing blocker, and surprisingly adept out of the backfield. The 5-11, 225 pounder will fill out to a 240 pound athlete by the time he rolls on to the 40.

I see a lot of San Diego Charger Mike Tolbert in his game.

This is a good get.

11? We should pass on him then.

A FB that looks for contact and is good at toting the rock?

Wow! might be something to this. Also, I think the forward pass will be a neat wrinkle to the offense.

Amazing

0:53 mark Power, balance, speed…wow.

If I had a sig, this is where it would go.

by sinless1 on Aug 7, 2025 1:48 PM CDT reply actions

I was waiting for someone to notice that specific run.

Look at his pad level, how he keeps his feet moving, the brutal stiff arm on the safety. Earl Campbell shit, yo.

by Scipio Tex on Aug 7, 2025 1:50 PM CDT up reply actions

good stuff

his balance is really impressive. great pad level. Only high school, but it looks like the defenders are trying to tackle a bowling ball.

by codaxx on Aug 7, 2025 2:02 PM CDT up reply actions

There is something viscerally satisfying about that kind of run.

The little kid in me comes out and I have a hard time not making the bam, bam, boom human beat box sounds every time he makes contact.

And then the surprising burst he shows at the end of the run starting around 1:45 catches me off guard.

This early offer thing is starting to grow on me.

Solution to your FB problem

Also interested in the package deal angle. Seems they fail to work out more often than not, but it worked with Cole, and when both parts of the package are takes in their own right, I say go for it.

Nice

This is the kind of analysis that keeps me coming back, Scipio.

Me like

Could he kind of fly under the radar as Joe Bergeron did?

by jpawelek10 on Aug 7, 2025 1:54 PM CDT reply actions

I like him.

but his few blocking plays weren’t great. He needs to use the same body lean and pad level blocking that he uses when he runs.

Take all the way though.

by The General on Aug 7, 2025 2:02 PM CDT reply actions

agree

he doesnt keep the feet moving like he does when he is toting the rock, but not shocking out of a high school RB

by codaxx on Aug 7, 2025 2:03 PM CDT up reply actions

They weren't perfect.

But the thing I liked is that he went looking for someone to hit, even after his first contact.

by Flipteach on Aug 7, 2025 2:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Both good points.

I would expect this kid to become a beast.

by The General on Aug 7, 2025 2:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Yup - he'll need to stay low, bring his feet and use his whole body

Rather than just extending his arms and launching the dudes into the air.

But the power is undeniable, and he does seem willing to do the dirty work so more refined lead blocking technique should be easily taught.

by nobis60 on Aug 7, 2025 4:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Cody couldn't execute a complete block until the middle of his college senior year

I’m sure a high school sophomore can attack that learning curve if he has the willingness and physical ability.

OK, so he's playing against midgets or something...

he is still doing what you’d expect him to do against that grade of competition if he is truly a potential elite…so,with that said,

I like what I see, especially his speed for a guy his size…but,

This early recruiting gambit will be interesting to observe as it unfolds over the next two (2!!!) years…we live in interesting times…

by densagain on Aug 7, 2025 2:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Kid looks huge

I’ll be happy if he’s still nimble enough to get a few carries at RB in college. I just really hope he’s not the Jack in the Box and milkshake type. If so, he may not be worth a damn at RB or FB. His diet and workout discipline will make the difference for him. Right now, he’s just that much bigger, better. Could be a serious weapon if he can get to Bennie before busting at the seams.

by Drew Kelson on Aug 7, 2025 2:12 PM CDT reply actions

The perils of early recruiting.

And why it’s a tough strategy when you don’t have an accompanying Saban trapdoor.

by Scipio Tex on Aug 7, 2025 2:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Didn't I read something

About Bennie giving commits a personalized workout plan? How early can that start? It’s still on the kid to follow through, but it might help.

by Flipteach on Aug 7, 2025 2:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Usually it's not an absence of information

It’s about oversight and supervision and personal motivation. And you have to train his family and his Mom, too. He doesn’t have a training table, just a dinner table.

by Scipio Tex on Aug 7, 2025 2:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Also kind of interesting

that, from what I can see from that film, he runs and blocks the way he does in what looks like an offense with a lot of zone-read, and even some pistol formations (first play, unless I’m mistaken). Kind of a different ball game in the I-formation for a fullback.

Looks for contact

There’s at least two or three of those private school kids in that video that still have treadmarks up their sternum from trying to tackle Gresham. Arm-tackling him is a strategy that sucks. Agreed, he needs some nutrition and exercise counseling to make sure any weight he puts on is good weight, but if he’s 235-240 and just as quick and powerful when he hits the forty acres, he might be an instant starter at fullback. This early offer business is looking better and better.

Sigh

If you’re a running back in high school and your blocking technique is good, it probably means your talent level is low. The talented guys are toting the rock.

Blocking is 30% technique and 70% want to (disclaimer: percentages totally made up by me with no scientific backing whatsoever). Any coach worth a damn should relish the chance to teach a good athlete that likes contact the remaining 30%

by Scipio Tex on Aug 7, 2025 5:13 PM CDT reply actions

Shit fight going on at 247 right now

b/c Carter Strickland at Horns Nation came out and said he doubts RSJ recommits to UT and his sources are saying another team (presumably LSU) has really pulled away from the pack while 247 posted something this morning essentially saying the opposite.

I realize this has little to do with what you wrote, Scipio. But pay site slap fights between 60 year old men each routinely giving their graduation year as validation for their views & righteousness are awesome.

actually the speculation from several sources is that both mom and dad are now in UT’s corner. who knows if they are right. but those who are claiming LSU has pulled out front seem to be saying this is either being driven by the AAU coach, or just as likely (imho) RSJ simply likes LSU more at this point.

either way, seems like this will be one of those deals where there are rumors up until the ink on his LOI is dry.

by Big(g) Ern on Aug 8, 2025 10:12 AM CDT up reply actions

Back to the interview

Sure sounds like Knox is softpedaling his committment to drum up more interest for some of his teammates. That’s as noble a reason as any. But if that’s true, um, Gresham needs to keep that to himself…

by Dagga Roosta on Aug 7, 2025 7:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Sounds like

The All Saints coaches wanted them both to wait till after the season to get more recruiting interest for the other players.
