Competitive Balance
It’s going to be a quirky year in college football. The key words in 2010 are (air quotes) "competitive balance."
Free BC tote bag to the Barker or Carnival-goer that correctly predicts which talking head at the WWL is the first to use the phrase. Get ready, it’s inevitable.
The NCAA football landscape is looking so average this Fall that Roger Goodell and Gary Bettman are envious. I hate to use the preseason polls as anything but litter box liner, but look at this variability.

Parker at Clemson is Godawful. I’ve seen a couple of games with this guy and I’m pretty sure my little sister can quarterback better.

I just hope we don’t end up with a 2-loss national champion*…but that is what it is looking like from five months out (* unless it’s us, of course).

this is the best overall year for QB’s in the last decade
Locker is by far the most overhyped QB since Ryan Leaf but with names like Keenum, Moore and Luck returning, this could be the best year for QB’s that I can remember in the last decade.
So this year lacks “star power?” Jeez, what are we watching, the red carpet for “Twilight” or college football? lmao
Mark it down, this will be the best year of College football since 2005

Jeremiah Masoli will steal your laptops and your hearts at the Grove. GIGGITY GIGGITY.
Also, USC is ineligible but you would expect Matt Barkley to progress nicely in year 2.

I’d add one more challenge for Gilbert: he will be protected by a shockingly average OL.

yes, i would echo other posters on here to say the pac12 has at least three good QBs in barkley Luck and the kid in AZ. then theres the kid at UW as well. forget their names.

Nick Foles is a junior at Arizona, transferred from Michigan State — Austin Westlake grad.

Didn’t Alabama win the MNC last year without a QB?
And if you believe ESPN’s NFL draft experts, Florida won two more without one, either.
Tebow, Hester, Ingram — who’s got the best defense and a battering ram on offense?
by McElroy on Aug 2, 2025 2:52 PM CDT reply actions
Cotcher didn’t mention Andrew Luck because he doesn’t consider Luck to be on a contender. And Barkley might have been mentioned then too. Or at least I think that’s his premise.
I actually like the national QB talent quite a bit.
Last year’s hyped QB senior class were big names because they had an established history and their teams were all Top 5 preseason juggernauts.
But their year played out thusly:
Bradford - injured, season in ruins
McCoy - miserable against every quality D he played, injured in MNC title game
Tebow - concussed early; weepy late
Hard to argue that each didn’t experience a significant measure of disappointment in their final season.
I expect breakthrough years from Pryor, Locker, Harris, Brantley.

I was sitting here wondering if Augie was really joking when he used to say he kept me around so he could practice his attention span. “If I can focus long enough to understand what you’re actually asking…..”
Now I’m wondering if Scipio is latin for “reading comprehension”.

Scipio and Matt —
If Gabbert and Johnson weren’t mentioned I’d almost give you credit.

Toad -
Given your athletic career, I would think you understood honorable mention.

Oh I have a trophy case, I can assure you! It says “Competitor” all over that bitch.
But Georgia Tech and Arkansas will not compete for anything.

Gabbert or Johnson could really make a name for themselves & their programs, but they’ll need help (in the form of GG & LJ failing to meet expectations). They’re both capable though.

The bama non-QB has never lost a game he started in HS or college.

“this is the best overall year for QB’s in the last decade”
Not sure if this is a joke, but it’s not even as good as last season…Moore is god awful.
Gabbert and Johnson could easily be better than Landry/Gilbert next year. And I guarantee they put up bigger numbers, if that’s what you go by.
Jefferson is, and always will be, the pinnacle of mediocrity.

And Peter Gardere was 4-0 against OU!!!!!

Hmm. A list that gives the Big 12’s three best QBs HM status (Gabbert and Johnson) or crickets (Griffin), gives full billing to Jordan Jefferson, and completely omits the best QB conference in the country (P10 with Locker, Luck, Foles, and Barkley).
Finding a way to incorporate the scientific name of the date rape drug earns bonus points though.
Nice effort. You’ll get’em next time!

I was all set to conjure up a snarky reply using your own last line, but it’s been a long day & I decided it wasn’t worth it. I’m taking the easy way out….quoting Scipio:
“Goddamn, people.”

This is texas, Dammit!!!
of course we are going to list our guy as the best in the Big 12 before he finishes one whole game.
as long as you are worshipping semi virgins keep your eye on the “weed” at Pokelahoma.
If you have another eye (not having one put out with a wild swing in a nose picking contest) keep it on one of the unmentioned “others”….that being Jordan Wynn. sorry but I’m going to make all you lonestar provincial types google him to find his school.
Finally in the shroom overdose catagory, we have Cody Hawkins whose dad thinks will be invited to more than one NFL camp as an undrafted free agent. God help the Colorado Buffaloes.

Jacory Harris had a spectacular season only if you don’t count the plays where he threw the ball to members of the opposing team.
Ponder is the best QB in that conference and it isn’t particularly close.

Selling short on Luck: He had a relatively high completion percentage (and very few TDs)because he wasn’t asked to force anything in the redzone - he handed off to Gephart instead. That luxury is gone and the new RB is…well does anyone know?
Landry Jones gets almost wholly knocked for his performance AT Nebraska (nearly half his picks were thrown in Lincoln while Suh planted him over and over). That was Jones first year on the field - meanwhile a 4 year veteran on a neutral field had just as bad as a day vs NU. I’m shading Jones towards his performance vs A&M than NU.
