I don't care how many times Bill Snyder has beaten Texas -- I would cheer for Ohio State against Arkansas.

You would even cheer for an URBAN MEYER coached Ohio St?? I guess I’m too young, I never saw how bad the Arkansas rivalry was. I grew up watching teh Major

That turnover only increases Snyder’s desire to annihilate the Building & Loan in Bedford Falls.

A game in Arkansas (either Fayetteville or Little Rock) were easily the worst road trips a Longhorn team could take. Their obsession with Texas combined with their backwoods manner made them unbearable.

How come Kansas State doesn’t pull dumb special teams play like that against us?

FWIW…

I wouldn’t call it “bad”, but rather “intense”. I thought it was bigger than 0u back then, mainly because it was a conference game - that, and we were both Top 10 pretty much every year through the 60’s. Well, 0u was, too, so maybe the difference was hate versus hate tempered with fear.

In my four years in the student section listening to that goddamned WOOoooooo, PIG! Sooey! over and over and over (hah, and you think Boomer Sooner is aggravating), I don’t recall ever sitting down, other than at halftime. At the ‘62 game, ambulances came into the stadium and around the track to the Old Farts section on the west side THREE TIMES to take heart attacks to Brack. The game never faltered. We held the piggies out on a goal line fumble recovery in the third, but still trailed 3-0 with about nine or ten minutes left, in the fourth quarter. We took over on downs from the piggies on our own 12, lost two on the first play, and spent the next nine minutes driving ninety yards on nineteen or twenty plays. Someone told me we threw a pass in that drive, but I don’t remember a single one, and I’m sure we didn’t throw more than twelve ot thirteen in the whole game. I recall that we converted on fourth downs three times on the drive, but maybe it was only two. Tommy T-Bird Ford scored the game’s only touchdown on third and goal with about thirty seconds left - and it was a damn food thing, because a lot more of the Old Farts were starting to look pretty shaky - no telling what a fourth down with five seconds left woulda done to ‘em. I’m pretty sure I’ve never been to a game that left tens of thousands of football fans absolutely, totally and completely wrung dry of every drop of adrenaline in their bodies. Walked away from the game thinking I might someday have a game experience as good, but never better. I lived in some crappy old apartments across Red River from the stadium, about where the parking garage for the track stadium is now. Red River doesn’t run there any more, and the piggies are more disgusting than hated or feared.

Snyder’s muttering about putting in Jordy Nelson and “that Sproles fellow.”

After Arkansas left for SEC, I knew there was no “rivalry” game that was sacrosanct.

Arkansas was big. bigger than Aggie and meaner in spirit than OU.

I’m with srr50, Arkansas versus malaria carrying mosquitos, and I’m going, " Misquitos, mosquitos, bite them in the ass!"

Man, since Klein missed on that pass that should have gone for a TD back in the 1st, the K St offense has been non-existent.

It’s interesting how rivalries work. Obviously, two teams have to be competitive to make it work. Hence no rivalry with TCU and Rice for all those years. Same with SMU until they started cheating and got good. Baylor was good in the 70s under Taft, at least sometimes, so we a stretch at least where there was rivalry. When OU was really bad after switzer left, the rivalry waned a bit. I can remember a time when Arkansas was the greatest rival because they were good and we were good, and yes it was the most hated place to go play, football or basketball. there was a stretch where smu was the most hated rival, for 2-3 years. I started watching Texas in the early 70s as a kid, so I don’t have a feel for the 60s. Aggie was always big, ou was always big, arkansas was always big. The better the other team, the more we lost to the other team, the bigger the hatred on our part.

It is sad to lose the great rivalry games. I’m not losing any sleep over it, but it’s kind of amazing to think we had 3 annual death matches and now we are down to 1. And I don’t think I’m overstating that. Those games were really that intense for the players and the fans.

Funny thing about the Arkansas rivalry — it really just mattered as long as Frank Broyles was there, and he didn’t win that much against Texas — it just always meant a lot in terms of conference and national prestige.

I wrote about it several years ago.

19-9 piggies at the half… assuming KSU doesn’t give up an 80-yarder in the last 20 seconds…

That was a bad, bad hit. I’m impressed that Snyder went out onto the field himself.

by parlin on Jan 6, 2026 9:08 PM CST reply actions

Snyder was hoping the stretcher would give him a ride to the locker room for half

by justhookit on Jan 6, 2026 9:15 PM CST reply actions

srr50, great observations about the rivalry. I remember we didn’t care too much for sweet lou either. we dominated that series but arkansas got in some big wins along the way. Although there are many many more fine arkansas fans than ugly ones, their ugliest fans always came out for us. I have hated few teams more than the strollin nolan teams, even though so of the ugliest incidents happened during the lemons tenure. the basketball rivalry really fed the football rivalry, because they were so good; not the case with ou and aggie.

Why couldn’t you leave instead of Mizzou?

by spider on Jan 6, 2026 11:09 PM CST reply actions

My son played in the Longhorn band back in the days that Arkansas was still in the SWC. . He says the absolute worst road trips were to Arkansas and the Arkansas fans were animals. Much worse than even Aggies at College Station. Always had to wear their ponchos in Arkansas whether it was raining or not because the Arkansas fans loved pouring wet stuff and throwing shit on the Texas band members.

Texas/Arkansas rivalry really started in the late 50’s, prior to that Arkansas was never much of a competitive foe in football. The rivalry in the 60s was Texas/Arkansas. Texas dominated OU in the 60s.
