RG III Is Off To The NFL
He informed Art Briles today that he will enter the NFL Draft.
The deadline for entering the draft is this coming Sunday, and reports indicate that Griffin is in the process of selecting an agent this week.
Right now the first five teams in the draft are: Indianapolis, Minnesota, St. Louis, Jacksonville, and Cleveland.
Indy has already indicated that they will select Andrew Luck. There are rumblings that Cleveland has soured somewhat on Colt McCoy,
And several mock drafts have the Browns taking Griffin.
Griffin, the Heisman Trophy winner, completed more than 72 percent of his passes this season, throwing for 4,293 yards and 37 touchdowns to lead the Bears to a 10-3 record and their first bowl victory in 19 years. He also rushed for 699 yards and 10 touchdowns this season.

Does Colt deserve souring on or should the Browns spend their draft lucre on skill positions? Ie is it a bad sitation for any qb?

The Colt thing is confusing to me. A year with a coaching staff that hated him and wouldn’t give him any coaching until required, an off-season of not being able to prepare for a new system because of the lock-out, and a season running a completely new offense with questionable protection and a running back throwing a hissy fit - and the Browns are ready to give up on him?
Not saying they shouldn’t make contingency plans, but going all in a new QB with a top draft choice given the circumstances just doesn’t make sense.
Good news for the rest of the Big 12 that RGIII is leaving. Should be interesting to see what is done with him after he is drafted. If he is as successful as Cam Newton because a coach tailors an offense to his skill set, I will be even more enraged at Jeff Fisher.

Unfortunately the only qualification for putting together a mock draft is that you be respiring.
In regards to the Browns, they are so bad that don’t need one player and would be smart to trade the pick. RGIII would not be a contingency plan, as you can’t tie up that much money in one position and rebuild a roster.
The bigger question to be about Cleveland is do they really have a plan in place?

The Browns need to get talent around Colt, and then they should see some improvement. What everyone forgets is that Joe Montana and Steve Young didn’t start winning until their third year running the West Coast offense. Unfortunately, the Browns recent history is that if the team stinks, it can only get better by bringing in a new QB - and this hasn’t worked at all. Holmgren should know better that to go that route, but this is the Browns we’re talking about.
And Jeff Fisher is a total douchebag.

LOL, that’s a mock draft by a yuck monkey for Dan Patrick’s show. Here’s the depth of his analysis:
Cleveland ranked No. 29 in offense with Colt McCoy running the show and would likely be ready to hand the keys of the offense over to Griffin immediately. No mention of Cleveland being tied for the lead in dropped passes last year, or the horrid O-line play, just overall offensive rank.

Sasha - Also don’t forget that Colt’s best receiving option this year was a rookie Greg Little.
But alas, the Browns don’t need to sour on Colt. He’s a third-round pick. Taking RGIII with the 5th overall isn’t overdrafting the position. It’s drafting a potential superstar QB and having a backup with a modest salary and 20+ games of starting experience to fill in if RGIII’s injured or a total bust. Colt may not like that, and he shouldn’t. But I think you’d have a hard time finding an NFL GM who would consider RGIII a bad take for the Browns just because Colt’s there already. Maybe it’s not strictly drafting for need but if there’s any position to take a first-round risk with big upside it’s QB. Ask Carolina.
Ideally the Browns would draft RGIII and trade him for a large roster overhaul. But the 2-4 teams already have young highly-drafted QBs. If a team like Miami or Washington or Seattle falls in love and decides to trade half their draft for him, any one of the 2-4 teams will take that deal before Cleveland gets a chance. So if RGIII is available at five, a big trade is probably not forthcoming. At that point I think the Browns take the best available player and Colt learns to cope.

That’s a nice explanation, Dagga. I think you’re spot on.

Cleveland is the “black hole in the outer space for pro talent”.
This could be good for Colt. Perhaps, some other team would be willing to pick him and possibly give him a legit chance to excel with some talent on the offensive side of the ball.
This thought resides from speculation that the Browns are not set that Colt is the QB of the future.

Good for RGIII. Seems like a classy kid and I wish him well. Wish he’d been ours but……well I won’t get into that.
Now some really good news would be if Tyler Wilson declares for the draft.
by Nunna Yo Bizness on Jan 10, 2026 8:33 PM CST reply actions
Nunna,
Why do feel if Tyler Wilson declares for the draft that it would be good news. I assume b/c of the DGB recruit. I would think he stays would be advantageous because if DGB would commit to Arkansas then they would have a young and inexperienced QB his sophmore and Junior year. Just a thought….
Should be an interesting NFL draft when it comes to QB’s. RG3 and Luck. Then throw in what happens to Payton Manning if Indy drafts Luck. Luck and Manning are not going to both be second string. So do you throw away your drafts for an RG3 or a Manning if Luck goes to Indy???
by striker on Jan 10, 2026 8:42 PM CST reply actions
RGIII is apparently smarter than Landry Jones.
No surprise.
by Daniel on Jan 10, 2026 8:43 PM CST reply actions
Nunna,
For clarification it would be advantageous for DGB to commit to Texas as Ash will have experience and will be a senior when DGB becomes a Junior. Doubt DGB makes a 4 year college experience.
RG3 is class act. Hope he does well. Just glad he will not at Baylor next year.
by striker on Jan 10, 2026 8:48 PM CST reply actions
Striker - Yeah I was talking about Tyler Wilson with regards to DGB. I hadn’t thought about it from your perspective. I guess I view Tyler Wilson staying as being an extra year for them square up who his replacement will be.
by Nunna Yo Bizness on Jan 10, 2026 9:06 PM CST reply actions
Thanks Nunna,
I guess it can be viewed both ways. I would think DGB would prefer a Senior QB throwing him the ball his Junior year. Just a thought.

Cleveland souring on Colt? Great, I hope they trade him to the Texans - we could sure use him!

I saw RGIII’s backup come off the bench and Baylor never missed a step. I wonder if we can beat them next year in Austin? Does anyone know when the Big12 schedules will be announced?

Everyone who dislikes Jeff Fischer has one thing in common…
by ColoradoAg on Jan 11, 2026 10:21 AM CST reply actions
The ability to realize he’s a lifetime .500 coach, and a complete asshole?
by Daniel on Jan 11, 2026 10:32 AM CST reply actions
I must be naive. Other than issues with Vince, what makes him an asshole?
by ColoradoAg on Jan 11, 2026 10:42 AM CST reply actions
Flash,
That was also against a Tech team that was terrible. Florence has experience as he was the guy who took over RGIII in 2009 after the knee injury.
What he can’t do is pose the threat with his feet like RGIII and the bigger concern is the lack of depth behind Florence. Petty threw I believe less than 5 passes and he is the only quarterback they signed in 2009, the quarterback they signed in 2010 isn’t on their roster (could be stashed at a juco), didn’t sign a quarterback in 2011, and don’t have true quarterback in this class.
Briles took some heat over how he recruited at UH and unless he has a kid stashed at juco, a transfer coming in, or pulls something out quick they are razor thin in an offensive system that exposes the quarterback to multiple hits.
by Davey O'Brien on Jan 11, 2026 10:48 AM CST reply actions
I am with you Colorado Ag. He did VY wrong and that is not cool. Excluding that scenario, which is a large exclusion what else has Fischer done so wrong. If he is the asshole everyone claims why are teams seeking his services? I am asking as I do not know and seems like everyone else is too.
He has a good record for wins and has taken a team to the superbowl. Would like to know???
by striker on Jan 11, 2026 12:05 PM CST reply actions
One thing is certain about the NFL—they believe in recycling.
I’m not sure Jeff Fisher is an asshole, plenty of media types think he is great. Certainly he never gave Vince Young a fair, open minded shot.
It’s just as certain that for a guy with sixteen years as a head coach in the NFL his record is extremely average. One trip to the super bowl and 6 winning seasons in 16 years is not the stuff of legend, its really more a case of a blind pig finding a truffle once in awhile.
