21 Jump Street
Saw it last night and it was an enjoyable thread of silver from the execrable loom of recent movie-making. It's a comedic re-imagining of the old teen heart throb series and it mocks the genre and itself; with a self-aware hat tip to Hollywood's endless recycling of nostalgic crap to turn a buck.
- Channing Tatum completely steals the movie with surprising comedic chops
- Johnny Depp has a nice cameo
- Rob Riggle plays the Rob Riggle character, which is starting to get old. However, his last scene will leave you in stitches and nausea. Also a hilarious callback to a scene from Stepbrothers
- Jonah Hill plays the Jonah Hill character (minus 50 pounds). Not tired of it yet
- It mocks the PC, environmentally aware high school kids of today, which Tatum's character - a former mindless jock - laments, blaming the change in high school's balance of power on Glee. He commits a hate crime on the first day of school and ends up having to befriend the nerd crowd while the sensitive, fragile, insecure Jonah Hill realizes he's now considered cool
- There are at least a half dozen laugh out loud moments and by today's movie standards, that's sufficient for a trip to the multiplex or an inclusion on your queue on Netflix
- If you're opposed to such lewd frivolity, go rent Midnight in Paris, which you'll find the humor in if you've ever read some books and shit

Multiplex not likely. Netflix it is.

Great movie if you're looking for a lot of laughs
Especially if you’re mildly intelligent and recognize the blatant meta references the film frequently employs. I love movies that aren’t arrogant enough to assume that everything in them is pure gold and are willing to be irreverent enough to mock even themselves (the movie itself, as well as the lead characters in Jonah, Channing, and Ice Cube). Aside from that, it’s definitely on the opposite side of the spectrum like Scipio stated.
Where I thought the movie fell flat was the action scenes. Hollywood puts them in for the masses and they start running together and getting boring very quickly for me nowadays. I did appreciate a few ironic jabs the movie took at the classic chase scenes (stuff not blowing up when the characters expect it to and Channing Tatum telling a hot woman she won’t have a hard time getting picked up after they steal her car).

So right on superfluous action scenes
except for the early mountain bike chases, which were perfectly in keeping with the self-mockery and tenor of the film. Small stakes, small scale. Zero need to attempt Jerry Bruckheimer shit in your irreverent comedy. I just don’t get it. It’s a complete misreading of your own product. I liked the stuff not blowing up piece too, but it wasn’t worth the extra ten minutes of action to set up the premise.

I'll go see it just to get more Ron Swanson
Best one liners on network tv right now, IMO.

He makes Channing Tatum recite Miranda
“Uh, you have the right to be an attorney.”

Loved Midnight in Paris
and Woody Allen period. I am, however, glad he didn’t cast himself in the lead. Decent acting jobs all around and it got much better as it went after a rather slow start.

I believe that love that is true and real, creates a respite from death.
All cowardice comes from not loving or not loving well, which is the same thing. And then the man who is brave and true looks death squarely in the face, like some rhino-hunters I know or Belmonte, who is truly brave… It is because they make love with sufficient passion, to push death out of their minds… until it returns, as it does, to all men… and then you must make really good love again.

Agree
Hemingway and Dali were a particular treat.

Speaking of treats
Ice Cube did a bang up job as Captain Dickson. You want to leave your brain at home but get ready for quite the ab work out. This movie is hysterical!
