Myck Kabongo Set to Announce NBA Decision at 10:00 a.m.

Per his Twitter feed, Texas Longhorns freshman point guard Myck Kabongo is set to announce his intentions for next year. So far, all the rumor-mongering has pointed to Kabongo entering the NBA Draft, despite being projected as only a borderline first round pick that may very well fall into the second (re: non-guaranteed contract) round.

Thankfully for Longhorns, Inc., the Longhorn Network and its millions thousands of viewers will be able to watch Kabongo's decision live. For the rest of us, the festivus can be followed on Twitter.

Whatever Kabongo's decision may be, there's sure to be a lot of discussion, but please keep it civil.

Myck while you’re there can you pick me up some Samantha Steele? I’m all out. Thanks.

If he goes, my biggest disappointment is . . .

that I just started pronouncing his first name correctly.

We are due for some good news

On this front.

We're sweating

a guy that scored 9 points a game going one and done. A perfect example of why my enthusiasm for college basketball has decreased by about 50% in the last 10 years.

good point

both his success at the pro level and at Texas are based on projections of his talent. It’s possible that he would never be elite playing all 4 years at Texas. I think he would be, but it’s not certain.
I’m more concerned about the fact that we may be without a lead guard of any experience next season. Better get that D fixed.

The football equivalent

would be David Ash declaring for the NFL draft after last season.

by nordberg on Mar 26, 2026 10:15 AM CDT up reply actions

Ha!

That’s harsh. I would counter with Malcolm Brown.

by Nickel Rover on Mar 26, 2026 10:20 AM CDT up reply actions

Let’s settle on Jaxon Shipley.

by nordberg on Mar 26, 2026 11:08 AM CDT up reply actions

I thought about that

but Jaxon didn’t have huge holes in his game as a freshman unless you count “not having a competent QB” or “getting a helmet in his leg”.

by Nickel Rover on Mar 26, 2026 11:32 AM CDT up reply actions

Then there are those 99 turnovers in a single season!

The NBA wants him for the same reason we do.

Did not see that coming.

My pronunciation practice paid off ! ! ! !

Seriously . . . his quickness is incredible. Toward the end of the year, he was driving into thickets less and less. This is a great, great thing for next year’s Horns.

Shortly after the announcement

Kabongo confirmed he’s declaring for the Canadian Basketball League draft instead.

by Vasherized on Mar 26, 2026 10:25 AM CDT reply actions

Also announced he has a clone

Will be coming to Texas in 18 years. His name Meyek.

HE IS THE ONE THAT WILL END THE WAR BETWEEN MAN AND THE MACHINES!!!

SHOCKING NEWS TO SAY THE LEAST…

Had to be a good sign that he was doing it on LHN, right?

Once that was announced, it’s almost as much of a sure thing as Matt Barkley with the USC band behind him.

by A-Tex Devil on Mar 26, 2026 10:44 AM CDT reply actions

Yeah

Was sort of obvious, I thought.

Our rotation

Just became considerably stronger. If we get strong development from Kabongo, Bond, and one of Holmes, McClellan, and Lewis we have core that’s going to be pretty good.

by Nickel Rover on Mar 26, 2026 10:45 AM CDT reply actions

Very happy (and surprised) to hear this

No clue how good he’ll be next year (hopefully he’ll make a big leap forward). But at least it breaks this string of one-and-done’s that has been so hard to stomach as a fan.

Drink. Laugh. Drink some more.

Just need Cameron to sign on the dotted line

and this team will be VERY talented next year.

Myck’s staying allows Gibbs to play more SG and gives Felix (incoming PG) more time to develop. Might even see Sheldon play some PG???

Things I’d like to see from Myck next year, and expect to see:

1) better assist / turnover ratio
2) better FG shooting %, which will come with more layups. Did not see enough penetrations by him this season.
3) better FT %

Fingers crossed that Ridley joins this bunch. It’s going to be a talented one without him. With him, it’s a Final Four bunch.

by Texoz on Mar 26, 2026 11:00 AM CDT reply actions

We’ll see Lewis at PG long before Sheldon.

We certainly have options, even with his J’absence.

by nordberg on Mar 26, 2026 11:10 AM CDT up reply actions

Final Four?

Uh, might want to pump the breaks on that one.

on a side note, I heard a loud boom last night around 8:30 pm

here in central/north Austin. Maybe that was Barnes’ head exploding when/if Myck told him last night?

by Texoz on Mar 26, 2026 11:03 AM CDT reply actions

Big leap from frosh to soph to be expected.

People have been on his ass for his play at times but his attitude has seemingly been great. That’s a great place to start. A summer of playing pick up with the NBA Longhorns and his teammates, Todd Wright, etc.

Really looking forward to seeing this guy next year with some more strength. The number of drives that ended up with his shot hitting nothing but board and his body sprawled across the baseline will go down as he gets quicker and meatier.

Congrats, Myck. Happy to have you back.

by Sailor Ripley on Mar 26, 2026 11:14 AM CDT reply actions

a pick'n'roll partner

could really do a lot for him as well. I think Holmes would be a good fit there, obviously Ridley if he shows.

by Nickel Rover on Mar 26, 2026 11:31 AM CDT up reply actions

certainly exciting news

If Myck can take a TJ or DJ sized step forward, we’ll be in great shape. quite frankly, there’s a lot of ways he can realistically improve his game between now and next fall. the tools are there. and developing rapport with the guys over the past year will certainly help.

so by my count, we’ll still likely to be short of 13 schollies for next year:

10 guys who “should” be here

Bond
Gibbs
Holmes
Kabongo
Lewis
McLellan

Felix
Ibeh
Lammert
Papapetrou

Maybe

Brown
Ridley

I know we’re in the business of savings schollies right now for upcoming classes. so with that said, Is DeMarcus Holland JCB insurance or did he receive a bona fide offer? Is Devonta Pollard a pipe dream? likelihood of a transfer or late offer to another post player?

it's pretty easy to see

exactly when his announcement happened based on just the tone of the comments. Pretty distinct shift from “glad he is leaving” to “we will probably win a game in the tournament next year.”

by FinestRawJellyBeans on Mar 26, 2026 11:44 AM CDT reply actions

yeah, let's focus on getting to the 2nd weekend before we call this a F4 bunch

but this decision can’t hurt but not sure who will pick up J’Cov’s points…we currently have a 1st-2nd round tourney gorilla dry humping us…

by ballrific on Mar 26, 2026 12:04 PM CDT reply actions

well, good for him for coming back

I was convinced he was going to foolishly charge ahead into 2nd round territory after a mediocre campaign at Texas (mediocre with the comparrison being - starting point guard- irrespective of class).

My faith in humanity is slightly restored.

Get better, give us an all big 12 year, get in the lottery and chase your dreams Myck. That’s the way it should work and I have no problem with that.
