2012 Texas Football Depth Chart Is Out
Some really interesting developments, particularly on defense. Ones we should be very excited about.

Comments:
- Note the lack of an OR between Ash and McCoy, but also paired with Brown presser assurances McCoy "would play"
- I interpret the Hills/Gray 3rd team split as Hills 3rd down back and Gray Wildcat operator. But that's my guess
- Kendall Sanders and Cayleb Jones are definitely playing this year
- Top 7 WRs: Shipley, Davis, Goodwin, Harris, Jackson, Sanders, Jones
- They weren't blowing smoke about Poehlmann. Really proud of him
- DJ Monroe listed as a WR is just a place to reflect his role. Nothing changed here
- No Daje Johnson because he was suspended for breaking team rules
- Greg Daniels makes a massive push at TE. Exciting stuff there
- Jalen Overstreet and Connor Brewer probably both redshirt
- Bergeron/Brown as co-starters

It will be fascinating to see if Kyle Ashby can hold off Nate Boyer for the whole season. Boyer has really been a media darling as of late.

So tired of the Nate Boyer cult.
I’ve always been a Kyle Ashby man. You can show me all of the advanced snapping statistics you like – I know that Kyle Ashby is a winner.

he needs to pull it together or be lost in the shuffle for good
by STLaw on Aug 22, 2025 8:13 PM CDT up reply actions
Still has time
But he’s in danger of being recruited over. Smyhte and the juco kid will be here next year, and Daniels and Onyegbule should only improve. Pretty troubling that he couldn’t crack the 2 deep this year considering who his competitors were.
by Big(g) Ern on Aug 22, 2025 9:49 PM CDT up reply actions
Don't forget that McFarland has had to learn the TE position.
Go find video of him in high school lined up with in a three point stance next to the offensive tackle with a defender over him.
Everything I ever saw of him in high school was in a spread offense with him lined up out wide against a 5’7" corner back in El Paso. Next exactly the top training ground for elite talent.
He has been in Austin all of a year and half and I would not write him off yet. No one knows is Grant can stay healthy, if Daniels can catch, or if Onyegbule can be effective carrying more weight.
Far too often kids aren’t allowed time to develop and if he is having trouble learning the position maybe the problem doesn’t lie with the talent as much as the teacher.
by davey o'brien on Aug 23, 2025 10:22 AM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
I don't disagree
McFarland was a WR in high school — as were a lot of the TEs recruited under the prior regime including DJ Grant if I remember correctly, so the transition likely requires some effort, and nobody is confusing Bruce Chambers with Tim Brewster.
I hope MJ proves me wrong, but I think this was his window. Add Caleb Bluett to the list above, and all of a sudden you have an awful lot of guys that he is trying to fight off – many of whom excel at either catching or blocking — MJ apparently has had problems with both in camp. And from everything I have heard, the staff thinks Smythe enrolls early, and together with Swaim offer them the complete TE package they have been searching for.
by Big(g) Ern on Aug 23, 2025 10:49 AM CDT up reply actions
Don't think we can write him off, but definitely disappointing given expectations
And fairly wide-open depth chart.
Not sure if Daniels played TE in highschool, but he was able to move into basically a starting position despite moving from the other side of the ball his 3rd year in the program and missing all spring with an injury.
by Horncasting on Aug 23, 2025 10:56 AM CDT up reply actions
Daniels played DT and DE at St. Pius. So a kid with absolutely no experience on the offensive side of the ball what so ever just jumped him.

His "window" was his redshirt freshman year
Dude. Who took over your handle?
by Scipio Tex on Aug 23, 2025 11:40 AM CDT up reply actions
Hah
He had no competition this year. This was a golden opportunity to seize a spot at least backing up Grant if not winning the job outright. There was a poo-poo platter of competition, and the feces won.
Next year, MJ’s competition is a JUCO kid that Harsin hand-picked, a most likely bulked up Onyegbule, Daniels who already jumped him, Caleb Bluett, and Durham Smythe (who while a freshman, will enroll early and already seems more comfortable blocking than MJ).
I never said that MJ is done and has no chance, but how was this not his best chance?
by Big(g) Ern on Aug 23, 2025 12:24 PM CDT up reply actions
Let's break it down.
Swaim is a de facto FB/H-back. Miles O is MJ McFarland redux, Smythe is a true freshman no more prepared to block a Alex Okafor heads up than I am, and Bluiett is another Greg Daniels. The way I see it, MJ will rise or fall based on his ability to develop some strength and technique such that he’s a passable blocker which allows us to exploit a 6-6 guy with soft hands. He may never make a push, but he could just as likely make it as a junior.

So we've got 4 different kickers
in the rotation…
Coaching “Wisdom”
When you have 4, you don’t have 1. Gonna miss Tucker, when he’s not punting.
Mack said that Nick has the best leg he’s seen at kickoffs. Not sure that really matters anymore. He didn’t specify which one, Rose or Jordan (or I wasn’t paying attention).
Quick tidbits from scout.com and espn:
Nick Rose runs a 4.4 40.
Nick Jordan made a 65 yard FG @ the underclassmen challenge with 0-5 mpg tailwind. In another challenge, he made a 77 yard kickoff.

Fera, healthy, is legit.
King is legit.
Jordan and Rose are freshmen . . . the latter has an ungodly leg.
We have others, as well. Mack said it was the deepest kicking group in his tenure, which I kind of figured would be the case when Fera transferred.
I thought we’d miss Hunter Lawrence. Tucker made me forget. (Knock on wood with Jordan/Fera.)

so many questions
- Any hope Estelle redshirts? Probably not.
- I thought most of the frosh WR buzz was about Marcus Johnson. And yet he’s behind Sanders. Interesting.
- That lineup at Z receiver is bizarre. 3 very different players. (yes I know they just had to put DJ somewhere…)
- Looks like McFarland wins “biggest camp disappointment”
- Surprised to see Bryant Jackson not only ORed with Harris, but first among “equals”. Again, runs counter to the buzz about Harris. Hopefully this means Bryant has really stepped up.
- And here I was thinking Whaley might be DT #5, pass rush specialist. Silly me.
- Where will Aaron Benson be playing next year?
- I like Turner being groomed for the Vaccaro role, if I’m inferring that properly. He looks like a great athlete who might be able to pull it off.

Chris Whaley:Nose tackle
that’s the most surprising thing to me. 2nd most is Brandon Moore at defensive tackle.
I know we’ll be rotating them all but this is still surprising. It didn’t look like Whaley had quite figured out run-defense in the spring game, in fact I would have thought from that game that Dorsey and Jackson were clearly ahead of Moore and Whaley even if they had lower ceilings.
I’m very curious to see if Whaley and Moore have made “the leap”, if Dorsey and Jackson simply weren’t sharp this fall, or what the case is here.
Not sure what the nickel personnel will look like. Having Thompson and Turner both emerging back there is definitely a good thing. If we bring Vaccaro down into nickel I wonder whether Phillips slides over to Free Safety and Thompson comes in or Phillips stays where he is and Turner comes in. Unknowable without having seen a practice.
by Nickel Rover on Aug 22, 2025 6:42 PM CDT reply actions
This is Manny Diaz
Whaley may line up at Safety holding Sheroid Evans like a javelin.
Also, it makes more sense on obvious passing downs. He’s a guy who might have the quickness to go laterally on screens and stuff if it gets funneled back.
I’m just dreaming shit in my head now.
Should be fun.

yeah
I think you’re right. Also, we play our nose tackle to the field side a lot, so it helps if he’s a freakish athlete.
I’m just surprised that he’s even starting, much less at a spot where he’s likely to get doubled. If he’s playing low, they’ll have to double him or he’ll tackle the QB before he can hand the ball off.

Not a lot of surprises either way. Best depth chart since 2008, and maybe you have to go back three years before that.

On paper Mack's best team not counting the QB
Every starter on the D but one or two will be playing on Sundays as well as several of the back ups. If Ash steps up the only problem is with O line depth. This looks like a Texas HS all star team. If the pass game surprises on the upside I wouldnt be surprised to see this team win every game. The only advantage OU has is Landry Jones.
by ditzler.walker on Aug 22, 2025 7:27 PM CDT reply actions
No way this team is better than the 2005 team.
The offensive line was far superior with Scott and Blaylock at tackles and known quantities not projections like Hawkins and Cochran.
Tightend was David Thomas who was far better than anyone the Horns have at tight end.
Wide receiver was very solid in 2005 while it is still an unknown in 2012 and Charles and Taylor were very comparable to anyone in 2012.
Defensively I believe there were four or five defensive linemen who ended up in the NFL, linebacker was the “weakest” point defensively, and the top five defensive backs were pretty damn solid with Brown, C.Griffin, M. Griffin, Huff, and some guy who stills lives in the shadow of his wife.
There is potential here in 2012, but let’s not go crazy and forget what Texas had on the two-deep just seven years ago.
by davey o'brien on Aug 23, 2025 10:28 AM CDT up reply actions
this defense might be better
Little more well-rounded and definitely deployed better.
Offenses aren’t close, sadly. That 2005 OL makes all the difference.
by Nickel Rover on Aug 23, 2025 11:04 AM CDT up reply actions
Might be better… but seems like a lot of “ifs” yet. 2/3 of LB unit is unproven. We are making assumptions on Whaley and Moore based on the depth chart as opposed to actually seeing them perform. Hicks has yet to have a consistent year, so even the 1 semi-proven LB has some question marks.
Only proven aspect of this defense is the DBs/DEs. Tough to compare it to 2005 as of now given that we are making some pretty optimistic assumptions on Edmond and the whole crew of DTs.
by Big(g) Ern on Aug 23, 2025 11:10 AM CDT up reply actions
I'm feeling very bullish
on the DT’s now. Dorsey and Jackson were both pretty good last year and they looked good in the spring game. If Moore and Whaley are ahead now it’s hard to believe it isn’t because they are doing great things.
And Whaley did some phenomenal things last year. Things that no DT should ever be able to do. Like, rush the QB, diagnose a quick flare screen to the RB, race over and cover the RB in about a second, denying the passing lane.
Just teaching him to stay low with good pad level consistently was going to make him pretty terrible to gameplan against. If he’s using his hands well he could be reaching elite status before long.
by Nickel Rover on Aug 23, 2025 12:06 PM CDT up reply actions
I agree that the 2012 might be better before it is all said and done simpy
because we still haven’t seen the new linebackers as starters and the second safety position.
Kenny V. is great, but whomever plays next to him will really have to step up so that the 2012 pair matches Huff and Mi. Griffin. I think too often it is forgotten just how good the trio of corners were in 2005 and I would match that with the 2012 trio.
Line depth is the area that I would give the nod to 2012 and I think Manny definitely goes about it differently than Gene.

if Moore and Whaley
are at the top of the depth chart as a result of having improved to the point where they’re actually reaching their potential it could be all over. Dominant DT play makes this the best D in the country.
by Nickel Rover on Aug 22, 2025 10:18 PM CDT up reply actions
Dominant DT play
Not to be too much of a blockhead, but what does dominant DT play get you? I guess what I’m asking is, what recent teams had dominant DTs. I’ll hang up and listen.
by ArthurFenstemaker on Aug 22, 2025 10:45 PM CDT up reply actions
good question: in short, a lot
It’s hard to get a running game going if you can’t block the DT’s. Really hard. If there is a consistent pass-rush from the DT’s you get into the “shortest distance is a straight line” problem. It’s hard to complete throws if the DT’s are getting a push up the middle. You have less time, it’s hard to step into the throw, and the throwing lanes can get clogged. Think Warren Sapp. As far as examples:
2009 Nebraska and OU had dominant DT play. Texas was up there as well, you may remember these as the best defenses those schools have had in the last decade.
Last year’s LSU team had really good DTs, they will this year as well.
Auburn stopped the Duck offense and won that game (2010 championship) largely because Oregon couldn’t handle DT Nick Fairley.
Last year’s Bama team didn’t have pass-rushers on DL but they did have really solid guys who could play Saban’s 2-gap technique, free up their LB’s, and made running up the middle on that team an unthinkable option.
The 09 Bama team we lost to had Terrance Cody and Marcell Dareus at DT (basically). Helped them gang up on our passing game and ignore the run game.
That help?
by Nickel Rover on Aug 22, 2025 11:49 PM CDT up reply actions
Which is what is being heard from all accounts on practice reports
The depth at DT is what most teams would kill for. I really like how our DL has shaped up this season. I think Whaley will have his breakout season this year ala Melton. Looking forward to seeing how the rotation does as a whole.
by STLaw on Aug 23, 2025 12:24 AM CDT up reply actions
A lot of times JC transfers don’t make the expected impact. I think it’s because, although talented and experienced, they just haven’t grown up in a school’s system, and that has put them behind other, less talented 3rd year players. Not playing puts them farther behind.
The genius of Snyder is that he doesn’t care. He schedules a couple of patsies and lets the JCs (that he relies so heavily on) learn on the job. By the time conference play starts, they know the school’s system.
It’s encouraging to see Moore and Hawkins listed as starters. Maybe they are so terrific that they know the whole system as well as guys who were here last year, but I’m betting they don’t. I think this is a sign the coaches recognize that if these guys are going to reach their potential here, they have to play right away. That said, I wonder if Hawkins is going to get a little more help in the first game, with H-backs and TEs instructed to clean up any protection snafus.
by TaylorTRoom on Aug 23, 2025 8:14 AM CDT reply actions
The nice thing for Hawkins is
that it’s hard to imagine him not having seen every damn blitz there is while facing a Diaz-coached defense in the Spring and Summer. OL can be an intricate dance both in run and pass blocking, but for some reason I’m not worried about him being too far behind the curve. Of course, as our TEs have iffy pass-catching value at best it wouldn’t shock me to see them staying in a bit or at least chipping ends on a lot of their routes, and I’m high enough on Cochran at RT to guess that help will be available for Hawkins’ side if needed.
I think a lot of Moore’s role will be “hit this gap as hard as you can and force two dudes to engage you”, which shouldn’t tax even the JUCO brainpan all too heavily ;)

Awesomesauce
A few thoughts to add to the many great ones already posted:
- If Whaley has progressed from a technique and ground-holding standpoint to the point that we can use him at nose to wreck centers with his quicks and force double teams to stop penetration, we may not give up a hundred yards on the ground in any game this year – to say nothing of
- I’m moving Poehlmann to the front of my list of Gaskamp Watch candidates. If he’s able to step in at RT and do a credible job in the event of a ding (I’m assuming Cochran would bounce to LT if Hawkins was the one dinged) while letting us keep our interior OL as-is it would just be a huge, huge contribution. If they had enough faith in Poehlmann to keep Estelle in a ‘break in case of emergency’ glass case and potentially preserve his redshirt, it would be phenomenal.
- Daniels could be another huge factor. I’m imagining that if he has blocking trouble it ain’t gonna be because of physicality or want-to. There will be SO. MUCH. CANDY. there for the taking off play action and the like for a TE who can just catch a simple pass that hits him in the damned hands that if Daniels can just block well he can be our leading receiver at TE simply by virtue of staying on the field and could really be the missing piece to this offense.
by nobis60 on Aug 23, 2025 11:40 AM CDT reply actions
Good thoughts
1. The Moore/Whaley pairing may be overdone since we’re going to see five guys in there logging at least 15-20 snaps a game, but it also tells you something about how we’ll be deploying Steve Edmond. Whaley and Edmond are basically storming through the gaps, Moore is holding the fort down, and we’re going to try to put you in 2nd and 12 before you can blink.
2. Poehlmann is a hands-down Gaskamp winner if he’s a viable #3. I think you should stick with your preseason pick of Desean Hales though.
3. I’m really excited about Daniels. He’s a specimen and if he exhibits even average hands, there’s a ton of candy available once our running game gets moving. Harsin has a knack for getting the TE free shots downfield, as we saw with Irby and Grant LY.

I like how we have the option
To try and demand double teams with different guys and free up Edmond to flow to the ball, or have everybody fly upfield Detroit Lions-style with the luxury of Edmond as an eraser who can take on a guard if our DL miss the back in the backfield.
