Texas Longhorns Basketball: DeMarcus Holland Commits
After taking an official visit to Austin this past weekend, 2012 combo guard DeMarcus Holland (Garland Naaman Forest) has committed to the Texas Longhorns, per his AAU Coach Lawrence Mann. Holland had previously been committed to the South Florida Bulls, but decommitted in late February, around the time he started receiving interest from Texas. He is expected to sign his Letter of Intent (LOI) on April 11, the first day of the Late Signing Period.
After the early entry departure of J'Covan Brown, Texas had a scholarship available, and Rick Barnes and staff were apparently concerned about backcourt depth. From last year's team, Texas returns sophomores Myck Kabongo, Julien Lewis, Sheldon McClellan, and Sterling Gibbs. However, the first three players will likely start at point guard, shooting guard, and small forward, respectively, leaving Gibbs as the only returning scholarship backup. Further, prior to Holland's commitment, the only guard in the 2012 class was point guard Javan Felix, expected to be Kabongo's understudy next fall.
Holland is rated as a three-star prospect by Rivals and Scout, and just a two-star prospect by ESPN. There is limited video footage on Holland (see below), but from what I've seen and from recruiting notes, Holland appears to be a tall combo guard who possesses a solid all-around skill set. He looks like a capable penetrator with a decent wingspan that makes him an asset on defense and on the glass. From a weaknesses perspective, he needs to work on his scoring prowess, particularly his outside shooting, and will have to add bulk to his rail-thin frame.
Holland's playing time next year is likely predicated on how much Lewis and Gibbs improve over the off-season. If Lewis proves capable of playing 25-30 minutes a game, and Gibbs can be an asset as a scorer and ball-handler off the bench, there appears to be little need for Holland to contribute major minutes. On the other hand, Holland possesses a size advantage over the smaller Gibbs, and perhaps can leverage that to be the plus defender and glue guy that Gibbs simply was not this past year.
There has been some talk that Holland could be a candidate for a redshirt, making his recruitment even more puzzling. Of the guards mentioned above, only Kabongo looks like an NBA early entry candidate, meaning that the backcourt will be awfully crowded in the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons. With a similarly stacked frontcourt, Texas is in a scholarship crunch starting with the 2013 class. I have repeatedly stated why that should be considered a problem.
With the commitment of Holland and a LOI signature expected from current Texas commit Cameron Ridley, Texas has just one more available scholarship in the 2012 class. Currently, Texas is recruiting five-star small forward Devonta Pollard, and may possibly get involved with current Tulsa shooting guard Jordan Clarkson, who is considering a transfer.

Out of the running...
…for Frazier and/or Randle? Guess it all depends on what happens with Clarkson? Maybe Pollard surprises the masses and heads down to the 40? Confusing finish to the end of the 2012 class.

Thoughts...
Pollard still in play. One more scholly available for ’12.
Nothing happening with Clarkson until he formally requests a transfer.
Gerry Hamilton thinks landing Clarkson along with Holland would take Texas out of the running for Frazier. I’m inclined to agree.
All in (with either Clarkson or Pollard), Texas has zero scholarships available for both the ’13 and ’14 classes. Open scholarships would depend on early entries (Kabongo and Ridley most likely), or transfers.

That's what I thought.
So it seems like the strategy the staff is employing is building depth in the backcourt and then mixing in a couple “elite” young front court guys - Ridley in ’12, hopefully Randle in ’13.
Ibeh is a 4 year guy. Have Bond and Holmes off the bench. Will have to wait and see how “Greek Hedo” develops and what he brings to the court.
Not a bad plan if the big men coming in each yr are athletic and can fill the lane. I’d like to see the staff bring in a stretch 4 - I guess Lammert fits that role but a redshirt is a must to contribute?

Really don't like a lot of Rick's recruiting decisions right now

Don't really understand the Holland decision
We have enough on the perimeter with Lewis/Sheldon/Papa/Myck/Felix, and Holland isn’t expected to contribute next year anyway—the exact time period he seems to be taken for. Seems contradictory to me.
I don’t understand the Papa/Holland pick up when you look at other options, namely Danuel House/Chicken Knowles, two more talented players who would have come here if Knowles had been offered in addition to House. I’m not going to bash Papa because I haven’t gotten to see him play, but unless he’s a revelation I just don’t really see the point from Rick’s perspective. I will say Papa’s KU offer is impressive, but hey, they offered Zach Peters too. Feels like Rick is trying to outthink the situation too much.
I was also never a fan of the Lammert take, though if you’re purely basing your analysis of it on skill set that is an understandable take. Still kind of confused on L.J. Rose vs. Javan Felix as well. Rose is homegrown, around 4 inches taller, and seems to be more talented in basically every conceivable facet of the game. He looked great in the New Orleans All-Star game a week back. Felix…not so much.
The main thing, though, is we’ve handicapped ourselves for some very talented 2013 and 2014 in-state classes after taking two huge classes in the past two years (keep in mind I’m assuming we at least get 1 of Clarkson/Pollard). While ’13 is looking slimmer with the Harrisons showing minimal interest in Texas and Matt Jones off to Duke, Randle and Frazier are (were?) very much in play, despite national interest. 2014 guys like Winslow, Mudiay, and Justin Jackson are all super elite players in a sterling class.

Some of the players you mention above
don’t come to your campus for free. Others just aren’t feeling Texas for whatever reason.

All the people I mentioned as passing on would have been interested in a Texas offer. House, Knowles, Rose.

Are all the decisions on Rick?
Or are our more highly coveted targets making decisions that push us to raiding South Florida? Unlike North Carolina (or us in football), we don’t always get to pick and choose.

Not all the decisions on him, for sure
I don’t blame him at all on two less talented players in Gibbs and Bond, because we needed warm bodies. Holland, on the other hand, is a take for a position we have two pretty good players at already in Lewis and McClellan, with Clarkson likely to be ready to go in 2013 and Frazier a possibility as well.
Even UNC hasn’t gotten to pick and choose lately, as they had to take late, lower-ranked bigs like Desmond Hubert just to have a semblance of depth up front. Also they’re starting to take some four-year guys (most of the people in their class this cycle) to build a more balanced program. Basketball’s tough like that because you get so few schollies and so much attrition of various sorts.
Good point though, and I agree.

just too early to pass judgment, imo...
perhaps this is the next take in the perceived recruiting paradigm shift? or perhaps there’s additional info RE: schollie allocation that we’re all not privy to? or maybe the kid is just a late bloomer…there are credible reports indicating as such.
I’m inclined to trust the staff on this one, although the development of similarly ranked players over the past several years has certainly not been a strongsuit.

As in seasons past.....
….. I find Rick’s staffing of this squad to be masterful!! I can just imagine the furry if he was attempting to give the J’CBrown scholarship to a marquee recruit likely to haul azz after just one season.

My biggest question about Holland . . .
Does he have anything by Sydmill Harris’ dad on his ipod?
by Cirque Du Salado on Apr 9, 2025 9:24 AM CDT reply actions
Ridley
Gerry Hamilton reporting that Ridley’s mom is saying he will sign LOI on the first day of the signing period. Not sure if this is old news… was the first time I saw it.
I like what Barnes is doing. With Ridley in the fold and Myck returning, next year’s ceiling could prove to be exciting. And I think they are going a long way towards restocking the long-term depth chart with guys like Holland that will stick around and hopefully devlop.

First time Ridley has set a definite date to sign
Not the first time he’s said he will sign.
