The World Needs More Achos
I started putting together a couple of different posts, one an assortment of links and the other about the Longhorn Network on YouTube.
In my travels around the web, I came across a couple more "Man, those Acho kids are awesome!" things so I thought I'd toss them up here.
Sam Acho, who already won the Campbell Award and was named Big 12 Sportsman of the Year is also a recipient of an NCAA Today's Top VIII Award.
TexasSports has some great video of Sam here.
Emmanuel Acho, is no slouch himself. This piece from the Longhorn Network is great.

Both Achos are the best full realization of the true student-athlete ethos
probably ever at Texas.

Love these guys
Solid Christian men, grounded individuals, genuinely care about others above themselves, hard workers.
Basically Tim Tebow without the recognition (character observation, not comparing talent levels). We’ve actually had a lot of those on our team lately.

If passing on a flunky, thug, dipshit, bar fighting, head kicking, drug dealing, or laptop stealing super-athlete to make room for an Acho or a Fozzy means having a merely good season instead of a BCS championship, then I’ll take the Acho or Fozzy. Winning with integrity is the holy grail, but it’s getting harder and harder to achieve in the current climate of sacrificing ethics, integrity, and NCAA compliance on the alter of BCS money.

Salutations!
Class of ‘87. 25 year reunion is this spring. Incredibly, my Marksman class of about 75 seniors had 33 National Merit Semifinalists. While I wasn’t a semifinalist, the foundation I received at St Mark’s paved the way for a great experience in growth and learning at the University of Texas, and both were essential in achieving a career in medicine. The time I spent helping folks in the Rio Grande Valley in clinics converted from old saloons and other makeshift facilities is reminiscent of the efforts in the Acho family video above. Cheers

Right on, that's awesome stuff you do
That must mean you were a classmate of the great Rhett Miller and the great chem teacher Ken Owens
by acho81 on Feb 17, 2026 5:46 PM CST up reply actions
He was 2 years behind me, but I knew Rhett for several years.
Owen Wilson was in my class at SM and we caroused around Austin when we were at UT.
Ken Owens didn’t teach me, but of course I knew him. Even though 25 years separate us at SM, some teachers I had you may know of were Arthur Douglas, Stephanie Barta, Liz Trice, George Hague, Bill Kysor, and the indomitable J.J. Connolly.
Congratulations on your acceptance The University of Texas

Just a senior at SM now...
But I just found out I am going to the University of Texas! Hook ’em!

I read that in the voice of Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory. Probably symptomatic of my morning marathon of BBT rather than any actual resemblance in meter and speaking cadence, but amusing nonetheless.
What specialty do you practice?

Not bad for a couple of 3 stars.
I hope to see the day when young men like this are the rule and not the exception not just in sport, but every day life.

My only lament is...
that Dr. Sonny Acho didn’t have more sons! I just love how guys like Sam, Manny, Fozzy, Colt, and Jordan keep restoring my faith in humanity. God bless you guys!

What I love most...
The Achos knew who they were as men and held true to that during their entire time on campus. While so many students/athletes struggle through college to figure out who they are, the Achos were able to make the most out of their time because while everyone else was struggling with distractions they were focused on their goals.
